I have to 1970s LPs on the Tradition label by Jon Rennard. Does anyone know if he recorded anything else? Also can anyone supply any info on this singer who I believe is sadly now dead.

Jon Rennard died in a car accident in Leeds in 1972.   Shortly before that I saw him do an excellent set at the Troubadour. As far as I am aware, his only recording was the album Brimbledon Fair.

The accident happened close to his home in the Chapel Allerton district of Leeds.   With him in the car, and also killed, was his roadie Marsh, a distant relative of mine.

There were no other commercial recordings to my knowledge.

I knew him as he ran clubs in Ledds and he was good chap for supporting my eary attempts at performing.
I was trying to track down his song'Percy the Peeler from Poppleton' awhile back.
I was a student in Leeds at the time I met him but I left Leeds in 1967 to return south.
I will always remember him, you are lucky to have some recordings of him.
I remember turning up to a pub and he was sat in a back room, singing to 2 people in very dimmed lighting,I'ld have liked to have known him more but I moved out of the scene as work took over.
Thats why I run 2 folk clubs and a song swap session these days.

You've got it right. There were only two recordings. Both on the Tradition label based in Macclesfield. I thought he was tremendous. Apart from his serious side he could be hilarious and stood up in comparison to all the other funnies at the time, Capstick, Harding, Williamson etc.

I still croak "Garners Gay" on occasions which I first heard from him. "I Live not Where I Love". Had a brilliant night once in the Bush in Hyde.

My wife and myself have the two albums - Brimbledon Fair and The Parting Glass (live).

My wife used to go out with Jon's mate, Marsh, who died in the car accident with him.

This was before my time. I came to Leeds in 1974.

I have tried in vain to get a copy of Brimbledon Fair to go with the ropey old cassette of Parting Glass I already have - a vinyl or CD of that would be good too. The master tapes are still extant I think, but the owners say they're not commercially worth publishing now. :(

I have both of the LPs Brimbledon Fair and The Parting Glass but would not part with them. With the right equipment you should be able to get a copy from an LP. Jon and Marsh were killed on 29th July 1971 on Halcyon Hill in Leeds.

Carrie, your grandad was a lovely character and a great musician. Yes Stefan Sobell would know, as would Bob Pegg, Dave Burland and many other denizens of the mid 60's Leeds and Barnsley scene. Remember the Prince of Wales in Swinegate.

Yes I remember Jon very well - in particular his version of 'The Night Visiting Song'. I remember I was at Sidmouth Folk Festival when the news broke of his death. Dave and Toni Arthur organised a collection there and then for his family....very sad. Had he lived, I believe he would have gone on to prove a significant force in the development of folk song interpretation generally and we would all have benefitied from it. A very sad and untimely loss.

Wow, this is weird!
Jon used to live in my spare room on Asket Hill in Leeds.
We wrote one of the instrumental tracks (Chicken Fat) on Brimbledon Fair together and recorded it in Macclesfield. My copy of the LP was loaned out and never returned eons ago. Thought I'd check the web to see if there were any copies about and ran across this thread. I could go on for months about how great Jon was. I even have a few pics around if anyone is interested. Carrie, give my love to gramma Pat.

I knew Jon well. Marsh sometimes took me to gigs. I have the 2 LPs and have just made them into CDs - not the best quality but it works. The night of the funeral we were all at the Irish Centre folk club and poor Tony Rose had to perform. Bizarre but this is teh first time I have listened to the LPs since his death - what a tragic loss.

I've put my 2 LPs onto CDs as well and since then I do listen to them more than I used. I'm pleased with the quality of mine (I used a Numark turntable and Audacity software). Mind you I had to do it more than once to get the quality I wanted.

I'm amazed at the good condition of my LPs. I did lend them to somebody many years ago and they "did the rounds" so to speak, so I feel lucky that they survived. I did have to "fight" to get them back!

Great to read the tributes to Jon who was a good friend and a one off. Important to record that he also played with the Jug & Bottle Washers Jug Band for more than 3 years.

The band played most of the Folk clubs and festivals in the north of England, toured Ireland supporting Johnny McAvoy (ex Dublin City Ramblers) Jon was an enthusiastic band member playing guitar, ukalele, kazoo and vocals. The other members of the band were John Wall (leader and organiser of the famous Memphis Folk Club in Leeds where Jon sang so often) on guitar, vocals, kazoo and funnel, Jim Peers on Jug (Sadly also no longer with us)and myself (Mark Peers)on the washboard.

I have many happy memories of Jon that included an amazing busking session at Whitby Folk festival in 1968 and many fun gigs right up to his tragic death. I have one of his LP's and some treasured tape recordings of the band live and of a Radio Leeds recording of "Shine" introduced by Bob Pegg. John Wall and myself have some photos of John with the band.

After Jon's sad death Bob Clark joined the band (see his contribution (Nov 07)and we changed the name to Count Orlandos Spasm Circus and later to the KC Moaners.

Jon got me a load of solo work in the Lakes when I needed it. I knew him quite well prior to his death, but didn't know Marsh that well.
I was in the Isle of Man when he was killed, together with Nick Strutt, and we couldn't make the funeral.
I never had his lps, so can't help there.

We saw Jon Rennard by chance in the Lake District, first doing an impromptu gig and then at a folk club. I love his voice and guitar and wish I had seen more of him. Still have his record Brimbledon Fair and played it last week.   Has anyone put the other one on to a CD?

I have put both LPs onto CD for my own personal use. Earlier in this thread I had to tell someone that I couldn't give them a CD because I wasn't sure of the legal position in respect of copyright. The LPs were recorded approximately 38 years ago. Does anybody know who owns the copyright?

Great to read all the messages re Jon Rennard. I was just a teenage folk fan in those far off days but our gang at The Bush folk club in Hyde just loved him and his music. Still have my copy of Brimbledon Fair LP - I have this particular tune played by Jon as my mobile phone ring tone! I downloaded this track (legally!) from iTunes I believe (or it may have been some other download website) as it's featured on a compilation album.

It's amazing that Jon's memory lives on after all these years. Until I happened on this message board I thought I was the only one with fond remembrances.

Percy the Peeler was from Potterton, rather than Poppleton though. I also recorded Jon at our club in York. Lovely singer and a thoroughly nice man.

I discovered Jon in Leeds Record Library almost 40 years ago and left Leeds 35 years ago with both of his LP's, still have them here in the U.S.. Only problem? - no record deck any more. Never met him but it's wonderful to know that there are others who remember him.

Jon ran a folk club at the Ferrands Arms in Bingley, Yorkshire (with Jim?). It was my introduction to folk music. It was a terrific club with Jon as host and many fine acts. I particulalry remember a young Vin Garbutt. Great memories.

I met Jon at Scarborough Folk Club in 1970. He was great both musically and personally. I was just starting out and he was very encouraging. I was lying in the bath in the summer of 71 listening to Folk on 2 when Jim Lloyd suddenly said that it was very sad that he had died. I was stunned!

Without going into details as to what happened, I resolved that night never to drink when I was gigging and I have stuck to that 100%. So Jon has stayed with me to this day.

I lost my copy of The Parting Glass in the USA. I'd LOVE to hear his songs again. Anyone got CD copies or even cassettes? My favorite, was his version of Jumbo the Elephant.

Met John in the late 60's when I used to perform in the folk clubs around Leeds, Harrogate and Ripon under the auspices of an old English teacher, and avid song collector, Les Pope. I used to book John in the club I ran at Washington and then go drinking with him the next day to make sure none of the booking money went south to Leeds. I do remember some classic drinking and singing sessions from a great troubadour. I still sing Johns version of the 'Bailiffs Daughter of Islington' when I drop into the traditional festivals in Scotland. Before the tragedy, Mash and his friends had just started a band called, if my memory serves me well, Threadbare Harmony? A great bunch of guys from a great time for music. I would be curious to know what became of Les Pope who got John a lot of work in the early days.

I recall being surprised when having to do 3 sets of songs when I was only geared up for 2. Those are far off days, I can do hundreds now.

Recently found an old tape of Jon with the Jug Band playing and singing with gusto at 2 live gigs in the late 1960's. One at Harrogate and the other at Tony Capsticks Folk Club in Rotherham. There was also a recording of an original song Jon wrote for the band when on tour in Ireland. Great days and great memories of Jon

My wife Lesley and I ran a folk club in Horsforth in the earky '90s. Les and his wife Isla became regulars there and on one rare Christmas occasion, Ilsa sang for us. They lived in Holt Park in Cookridge when we knew them. We got to know Les very well and he gave me several tapes of old folk club recordings from the '60s and later. They were from his old reel to reel collection and were pretty bad quality sadly. He also gave me both of Jon's LPs on tape, again poor quality. I had the pleasure of seeing Jon gigging in '71, shortly before his death. He performed in the Windmill in Deal, Kent. I especially remember his wit and banter and his wonderful rendering of Jumbo the Elephant.

Les Pope's wife Ilsa died in the mid '90s and some time later Les remarried to a long standing friend Olive. He lived his last few years with her in Otley in a new bungalow at the bottom of the Chevin, opposite the old cattle market. Les was a really smashing chap and was delighted when Lesley and I played and sang several of Jon's arrangement for him at the Horsforth club.

I was also a good friend of both Jon and Marsh. The first time I ever sang in public was at Les Pope's old White Horse club in Ripon with Marsh's cousin, Patrick Burns, and Marsh was with us. We sang 'The White Cockade'.
Jon was a great singer and a lovely guy. I can remember so many joyous nights around Ripon, Harrogate, Knaresboro and Leeds. Writing this now, I can still recall the thudding shock when Patrick told me that they'd been killed the previous evening. I was 22, I think Marsh was younger. Too young for all that.

The Marsh in Threadbare Consort was another Marsh. Consort's album 'Wearing Thin' was dedicated to Les Pope, who encouraged us all.

If I remember rightly, they were on the way home from a gig at the folk club that the Union Folk ran in... I THINK it was the "Durham Ox" in Congeleton.

I've just remembered that the last time I saw Jon was late one night when we bumped into each other in the otherwise deserted Waiting Room at Leeds Station. Both well oiled (on pints of Yamaha), and waiting for the last train home.

I remember Jon - he gave me my first ever booking in his club at the Peel on Boar Lane in Leeds, probably in 1965 / 66.

I loved Jumbo the Elephant when I was a lad - my dad Roger has the album Parting Glass - in fact it is him introducing Jon at the beginning of the live recording. I am pretty sure it was recorded at the Bate Hall in Macclesfield - at least that was where the Macdonald folk group played of which Rog was part, but could have been the Union Folk...

More thanks for posting this selection of Jon's recordings on Youtube and reminding us what a considerable talent was lost to us those years ago.
I only heard Jon perform once, at Harrogate Folk Club when it was at the Irish Club on East Parade, probably spring or early summer of 1971 not long before he was killed. On that occasion representatives of the local bench of magistrates turned up to see what these young people were getting up to with their folk music. They went away greatly impressed. If Ray Black, folk club organiser at that time follows this forum he may be able to confirm these details.

Today is the 40th anniversary of Jon's death and I have uploaded The Female Drummer Boy to my YouTube channel. Jon sang this song on the LP "The Parting Glass" which was recorded at the Bate Hall Folk Club, Macclesfield in November 1970.

Jon was a talented and popular performer; live performances by him were magical. It is important that people can search for him online and find examples of his singing/songwriting/guitar playing as well as being able to capture some of the magic of a live performance by him; he had a great sense of humour. His death was a huge loss to folk music.

Jon played regularly in The Kennet Folk Club in Aldermaston Berkshire and was a brilliant singer and friend. My ex has copies of both Brimbledon Fair and A Parting Glass but, the way of the world, I can't get copies. If anyone could do me copies in any form I would be most grateful. I have the words of a song Jon used to sing hand written by him on headed note paper, I think it was no. 21A but definitely Methley Drive, Leeds.

I read all of this with tears in my eyes after all these years. I still hold many kind regards for Jon. He always made me laugh. I found him so warm and funny. I so loved to hear him play. He will "NEVER" be forgotten in my heart. "In Your Smile" will always remind me of Jon and the love he held for my sister.

I have just uploaded The Parting Glass to YouTube. I have left in Jon's introduction to the song and I have copied the following information from the back of the LP (recorded at the Bate Hall Folk Club, Macclesfield, November 1970) cover:


"Although JON RENNARD'S first album -- "Brimbledon Fair" -- was a great success, embodying as it did immaculate performances of many of his best loved songs and ballads, it was a studio recording and inevitably lacking the 'magic' atmosphere for which he was justly renowned.

Here, in his second and last record, we salute Jon as his countless friends and followers knew and loved him -- holding a folk club audience spellbound with his renderings of tender ballads, drawing their eager participation in the chorus songs and reducing them to helpless mirth with the irreverence of his introductions. Sometimes bawdy, but never offensive, Jon's comments on his songs -- contrasting sharply with his obvious respect for them when he sang -- were part of the charm which endeared him to enthusiasts throughout the land.

This is an edited version of one evening's guest appearance at an ordinary, average FOLK CLUB. We were concerned not to embellish the occasion, making the microphones, etc. as unobtrusive as possible and the guest even received his fee! In the subsequent editing of the tapes we were faced with an overabundance of material and the most agonising part was deciding what to omit.

As a former resident of Leeds, - I recall that heard Jon Rennard in a folk club probably in the very early 70s and really enjoyed the music he played. I was looking for a recording of the Holmfirth anthem and found Jon Rennard on You tube and thought it the best on YOU Tube so much I listened to others of the recording of Jon that have been uploaded especially the Parting Glass. thanks to all the contributors above and to enjay for the chance to hear Jon again.

Jane was one of my flatmates in Leeds in those days and Jon spent plenty of time there when we four physio students lived together in Headingley. Many happy nights were spent at Folk Clubs in and around Leeds in late sixties. Also remember well Bob Clark and his roommates at that time. Spoke to Jane on Friday.

I've only just found this Jon thread. He was a lovely guy, great fun and a fine singer. A few days before he died he spent the day with Toni and myself in our cottage in Hurst Green in Surrey at the end of a southern tour. The weather was fabulous and we lay about in the sun eating strawberries and cream and talking about music and future plans. We had no idea when we waved him goodbye as he drove off up our lane that we'd never see him again, and that the folk scene and his family would lose such a sweet person. Of all the friends that have died over the years Jon is the one who most frequently pops into my mind, and I can never hear 'The Parting Glass' without thinking of him lying on our sunny lawn, laughing and eating strawberries. Such a shame, as, of course, are the deaths of so many other lovely members of the folk music community.

I'm a student from Germany, equipped with an (unfortunately quite rudimentary) amateur studio and very much interested in British folk music.
I had the honour of providing the Irish musician Mr Mick Fitzgerald ('In The Morning') with my guitar and some amplification when he played some spontaneous gigs around Rheinbach, waking my interest in the lesser-known artists of the folk scene - such as Mr Rennard. Especially "Lullaby" and "Holmfirth Anthem" impressed (and still impress) me a lot.

Although I'm of a different generation and, most importantly, from a different country, I'd gladly support any efforts to grant this inspiring musician the deserved re-issue of his recordings. Motco stated that the holders of the master tapes do not believe in a commercial release. Nowadays there are so many ways to 'monitor' the prefinancing of low-edition CD/LP/Download releases via the Internet. A non-profit release could theoretically be realised - only, of course, if the family and the tape holders are interested in such a project.

I see that some people in this forum have already made efforts to find tapes etc. If some concrete plans should arise, I'd gladly offer any help or advance a bit of money on loan. If, however, the technical issues would be the limiting factor, I could provide a small Revox/Studer PR99 2-track studio machine to transfer potential stereo tapes into HQ-WAV files.

The nephew of Jon Rennard's son has posted two videos to YouTube showing Jon's guitar that he used on tour. I am not sure if this is the same guitar that Jon is holding in the photo on the back sleeve of "Brimbledon Fair".

Jon,Bob CLark & myself set up the Folk Club @ The Ferrands Arms Bingley way back,& we ran it for about 10 years I think-it was a long time ago & I am 81 now.We called it Captain Ferrands Folk Club.Jon was magic on stage & the more he drank the better he performed & had the audience eating out of his hand.He was quite a character too.I had a party at the brewery in Kirkstall where I worked & lived & of course Jon & Marsh were there & helped themselves to a few bottles from the store when they left ,Jon later told me.Dave Anderson the Scotsman was also there-where is he now?Great memories of Strutt & Knowles & Sobel,great days & parties @ Bobs place.Jon was on the way to great things-I remember Euan McCall &Peggy Seeger,Tim Hart & Maddy Prior,Jeremy Taylor& Dave Burland,The Bolton Bullfrog @ the Ferrands & Jim Wishart(where is he now?) We actually ran a Folk Festival in Jons name for a couple of years & I have the presentation cup @ home. Still remember Jon quite vividly.

Jon was from the looks and recordings I have been given (Graham Holloway) a fine singer and guitarist and i agree the songs are unbelieveably good and his demise truly devastating ~ few have in my mind since been able to repeat his standard of performance ~ a sad sad loss of such talent

I was listening to some tapes just the other day of Jon playing with the JBW Jugband on a live gig in Harrogate with some rousing stuff including backing Diz Disley on Bill Bailey.
