Subject: Bruce Molsky UK Tour From: Eugene Judge Date: 18 Feb 04 - 02:05 PM One of the most influential fiddlers of his generation, Bruce Molsky is also a remarkable guitarist, banjoist and singer. His high-spirited music melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune calls him "old-time music's answer to Ry Cooder - a commanding musician with a voracious appetite for traditional music styles." Darol Anger has dubbed him "The Rembrandt of Appalachian Fiddling." Subject: RE: Bruce Molsky UK Tour From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Feb 04 - 11:57 PM I saw Bruce in Honolulu earlier this month with Fiddlers 4, a "string quartet" with Bruce, Darol Anger, Michael Doucet, and an impressive young musician named Rashad Eggleston who plays what Darol called "a strange new instrument that bears a strong resemblance to a cello." They were absolutely wonderful, and I'd highly recommend going to see them if you have the chance. Bruce was the leader of my band lab at the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in 1989, and he taught me how to play music with people for the first time (in my case, backup guitar for old-time fiddle tunes). He was great then and has gotten even better. Check out his CD, "Lost Boy." Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: Bruce Molsky UK Tour From: GUEST,Chanteyranger Date: 25 Feb 04 - 02:39 PM Rushad is pure genius on the "strange new instrument...."! He's taking the cello in new directions, and is just flat out a great musician. (BTW, "Rushad" is the proper spelling of his name) |
Subject: RE: Bruce Molsky UK Tour From: Mark Cohen Date: 26 Feb 04 - 12:28 AM I knew that, and am duly chagrined. By the way, there was a guy in Seattle in the 80's who also did some strange and wonderful things with a cello...whatever happened to Seth Blair? Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Bruce Molsky UK Tour From: GUEST Date: 11 Mar 04 - 06:37 PM Saw Bruce at Irvine on 3rd March. He was not known to many at the club but all the comments afterwards were very positive. A very talented performer. Those who didn't take the chance to seee him were the losers. In addition to his musical talents he knows a good whisky - particularly Lagavulin ( a single malt from Islay). I spoke to him after the gig and he didn't know of this site or thread. Bruce if youv'e found it now - Hi and hope to see you back in Scotland. |
