By the way, I do find "After the Snow" and "Cry the Mountains White" (among other songs of hers) on YouTube. Dayle was a favorite of mine when I was in college, and I listened to her songs via Jefferson Kaye's Hootenanny show on WBZ. I had the privilege of meeting her in person once-- if I recall correctly, she and her first husband were going through a divorce at that time, and it was definitely a difficult period for her. According to the Gloucester (MA) Times, she died suddenly on 21 January 2021, under the name of Ramona D. Murray. She had three children. I just found out this information a few days ago, but sad to report that Dayle Stanley passed away in January 2021 in Massachusetts. As far as I know, she had not been involved in
music for many years.

Fortunately her two LP's from the 1960's are available to hear on Youtube. I was lucky to find both LP's many years ago and still have them.
Not sure if it was ever reported here on Mudcat back in January of this year or not but I just read it a few days ago
on one of her websites.

I've been spending a delightful day revisiting your six albums and marveling at their consistency over 25 years. My only disappointment is hearing only a single lead vocal by Anna Sofi (for reasons you too well know).

"From my lips to God's ear", as they say, but there is a song that I yearn to hear her sing as the final track on a future album. The song is entitled "After The Snow" and was written in March of 1964 (if I remember correctly) by Stephen Scotti (1935-2013)--a locally renowned Cape Ann musician, composer, and tuner and restorer of pianos--on the eve of the birth of his first son, Raim Paul Scotti, who has since inherited his father's piano repair business. The song was recorded by Stephen's then-wife, folk singer Dayle Stanley (b. 1939), as the title song of her second album on the Squire label; both albums are out-of-print collectors' items. The couple divorced some years after the arrival of their second son Christopher. Now long-since retired from the music scene, Dayle is remarried and lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts under her married name, Ramona Murray (Dayle is her middle name). I cannot boast of having met any of them, but I did see Dayle perform live at Tufts University in 1966. While a student living on campus, one evening some weeks before the concert, I had my radio tuned to Jefferson Kaye's 'Hootenanny' show on WBZ AM when he played "Child Of Hollow Times"--and I was so blown away by Dayle's voice that I rushed right out to buy the album. Soon after, I found her second album and heard "After The Snow" for the first time. Both songs have haunted my memory ever since, but especially "After The Snow" which, IMHO, ranks with Elton John's "Your Song", Ewan McColl's "The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face)" and David Crosby's "Everybody's Been Burned" among the greatest love songs ever written! And yet, sadly, it is remembered by almost no one.

The best arrangement, I think, would be Anna Sofi accompanying herself on acoustic guitar--preferably a 12-string for a more ethereal quality--Nicklas on Mellotron or Chamberlin, and Jan Erik, Peter and Marty on "admirable restraint" (as Bob Fripp might put it).

Attached are MP3's of Dayle's original recording and a later cover by Canadian folk singer Bonnie Dobson; plus a PDF of the lyrics, as accurately as I can pin them down from various sources.

I have found Raem Scotti in the Gloucester White Pages and written him a letter, so I may soon have long-awaited news about Dayle to share with you all--but that isn't the only reason I wrote him:

I don't want to get everyone's hopes up too high, but if all goes well, we may soon have another fine cover of "After The Snow" to delight us, one which might possibly revive Dayle's career (provided she's still living; she must be well into her 70's) and bring her recordings back to the light of day. For several years, I have been following a band from Sweden called Anekdoten. Their thing is heavy Progressive Rock influenced by King Crimson. They started in the early 90's after a period of time as a King Crimson tribute band under a different name, and are the tip of the spear of the 90's Mellotron revival, but they do have their relatively quiet moments. Their Mellotronist and only female member, Anna Sofi Dahlberg, has done at least one lead vocal; "In Freedom", from their second album 'Nucleus' (link below). She has a lovely voice somewhat similar to that of Bonnie Dobson. She also plays the cello and has a background in a wide variety of music, including folk.

For some time, I have been trying to persuade Anekdoten to do a cover of "After The Snow" with Anna Sofi (double first name, rather common in Sweden) on the vocal, through their Facebook page, and I invite you all to join me in this campaign by writing to them at '[e-mail]'. If they hear from enough people about this, they just might do it--and they are beholden to no one, doing EVERYTHING themselves and outsourcing nothing, right down to their own label (Virta). I've given them the YouTube link to Dayle's original recording, along with the lyrics as Jim Dixon has rendered them above, except that it's "IN vast array".

Let's give it our best shot and see if we can make this happen!

Stephen Scotti passed away in July of 2013 at age 78. Here's the link to the obituary notice:

You will note that there is no mention of Dayle, the mother of his two sons, unless Christine is her real first name (not Ramona) and she is alive and well and Stephen's widow.

What has been posted here about Dayle and Stephen conflicts with something I remember from seeing Dayle perform at Tufts University in February 1966. She mentioned to the audience something about a divorce, and I inferred that she and Stephen were no longer together, and yet "Clinton" here says he/she met and hung out with them in the early 70's and that they shared a home in Gloucester at that time.

I am grateful to whoever posted the lyrics to "After The Snow", because there is a line in the song that I had despaired of making out from either Dayle's or Bonnie Dobson's rendition. The line is "Stolen wine we found on Orange Hill".

For any who may be interested--I have a long-standing hobby of making conceptual music mixes--"musicollages", as I call them--and about four years ago, after discovering both renditions of "After The Snow" on YouTube, I curated a mix called 'In The Bleak Mid-Winter', on a Christmas theme with an embedded love story that ends in death; the actual inspiration for the mix was "The Christmas Shoes". The beautiful and haunting "After the Snow" was sung by Canadian folksinger Bonnie Dobson on an album called "For the Love of Him" (another gorgeous love song). The song is credited to S. Scotti. There has been a renewed interest in Bonnie Dobson, who has lived in the UK for a long time. Several of her early albums have been re-released in CD format, including "For the Love of Him" which includes "After the Snow". Available on Amazon.
If anyone has the full lyrics to "After the Snow" I'd love to have them. And if anyone knows anything about the songwriter, S. Scotti, please share.

I met and hung out with Dale & Steve in Gloucester in the early 70s. There was always a bustle of "creative types" in and out. I remember entering the kitchen and finding her at the table with Odetta. They had a beautiful home in Gloucester overlooking Ipswich Bay.

The kids were special and Christopher was a self proclaimed "wireman".

I also met and fell in love with their baby sitter who taught me a lot about living a larger life.

Dale was always sweet, welcoming and extremely interesting. I remember her playing me a wacky cut titled "Dancing in the Nude" by then studio guitarist Marty Mull.

Dayle Stanley is now Ramona Murray? married to Williard. Rae Scotti, Washington St., Gloucester, MA. I also had an album of hers years ago. Stephen and Dayle split and years later, I met and married Steve. Much to my surprise..I had bought her album..bldg. 19. She was really good.

I was Steve and Dayle's babysitter. They had two great kids, Raem Paul and Christopher Robin. She had a stunning voice. They were good folks.
They lived in Gloucester Mass when I knew them. Steve was very active there in theater and music. I think Raem is still there,

I remember Dayle Stanley as well. I had her first album "Child of Hollow Times" in the sixties and listened to it till it nearly wore out. I was singing in the folk scene as well then (I left it for musicals, then later classic) and found her haunting and inspirational. I especially remember her rendition of "Anathea" - beautiful.

A couple of years back I first tried to find her in the Net and was quite astonished when the search came back with so few results. You can find tons of references in the internet to the most meaningless occurrences and unknown people, but pretty much all you find on Dayle Stanley is other people looking for her.

Incidentally I just checked E-Bay in America and found "child of hollow times" - Article 370159134181 - in case anyone's interested. (I would buy it in a flash, but I live in Europe and with shipping it starts to get very expensive.)

Good to know at least that Dayle is remembered.

I was haunted for years by the song Dayle sang named "Cry the Mountains White". I had heard it on a Boston radio folk show (WBZ Sunday nights with host Dick Summer I think)back in the early or mid 60's. I finally was able to make a copy off a radio station playlist onb the internet just a few years ago. I would also love to have CD's of her albums. There is one song of hers I believe on a recently released compilation CD titled "Women Blue". I wonder where the royalty check for that will be sent since I guess no one knows where she is today. I think she would be about 63 now? I remember that Patrick Sky recorded one of her songs.

I'm so glad to read that people still remember Dayle Stanley.
I have both of her albums and they are just beautiful.
Unfortunately I do not have the capability or knowledge :-( to put them onto a CD. I love her version of, "Shennendoah" which actually is my favourite of all the many, many artists who have recorded it.
It is absolutely stunning!!

I will share my memories of how I came to know about Dayle Stanley.
Many, many years ago, in the 1970's I was in a Woolworth's store,
(ah,sadly those aren't around anymore) and I was looking through their music section of albums and 45 records. I saw the album, "After the Snow" and although I had never heard of Dayle Stanley, I thought the cover was very nice and read the back of the album cover. I was already a hugh Joan Baez fan and I thought that this album looked like something I would enjoy. I bought it for a few dollars (it was new, not used)and as soon as I got home, I listened to it. I immediately loved it!! I thought that Dayle had a lovely voice and wondered why she was not well known.

Many years later I found her other album somewhere else and it is also a wonderful record.
I love her voice and only wish they had been rereleased on CD.
I guess many obscure folk artists from the 60's have never had their records released on CD.

While I'm not from Boston, I remember the 2 albums from Dayle very well. "After the Snow" was my favorite. I wish I still had the albums, but unfortunately, they got sold without my knowing it. Wish there was a way someone could put them out on cd. "I used to walk, alone by the sea, watching the waves touch the shore........" are lines I still remember from "After the Snow". Thanks for the reminder of this great singer.

Accompanied only by a single acoustic six-string, and using no reverb or special effects of any kind, Dayle managed to create a spacey and haunting effect with just her voice.

Scotti himself was no slouch as a composer. "After the Snow" had an incredibly gorgeous melody that I remember as if I had heard it only yesterday, yet it was heard and remembered by almost no one else. He wrote the song for Dayle when she was pregnant with their love child; I recall these lines from the text:

Sadly, those two albums are long out-of-print and have never, to my knowledge, been reissued. "
