Subject: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Coyote Breath Date: 02 Mar 04 - 11:46 AM I have parts of a song stuck in my brain. I think that it was performed by the Phipps Family. I have no idea of the title. But... Here are what words I do remember (the tune is similar to "The Knoxville Girl") They mocked Him and they scorned Him They even pierced His side The water and blood came pouring down The sins of men to hide They say He uttered not a word He knew he had to die The awful shame (pain?) our Saviour bore (-----------------) The day is surely coming When He'll return again He'll sit (stand?) upon the throne of God And judge the souls of men (----------------------------) I tried to search for the Phipps Family and there is a Folkways index but for some reason I keep getting "do you want to debug" messages each time I try to click on the link. If anyone can steer me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I wish to incorporate the song in a "sermon" I am going to present at church which deals with the Passion. CB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Joe Offer Date: 02 Mar 04 - 12:11 PM Hi, CB - try this partial Phipps discography and see if the song comes up. I tried searching a number of ways for your song, and came up with nothing. Trouble is, your missing last lines are probably the title of the song. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:39 PM Hey Coyote: I just got three Phipps Family Albums from Old Homestead Records in Brighton, Michigan. The owner of Old Homestead knew A.L. Phipps well and has all 19 of their albums in his personal collection. I'm sure he could tell you which album the song is on. I'll also check some tapes that a friend of mine made of all his albums, to see if it's on one of them. P.M. me if you want any more direction. In the meantime, I'll check out the tapes.. Jerry |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Coyote Breath Date: 04 Mar 04 - 12:22 AM Thank you Joe and Jerry. I have wracked my brains trying to remember the title of the song. I sent away for a small collection of "holiness songs" from a radio station in Waterloo, Iowa about 45 years ago. The discs were all monaural and had three different labels. One set of labels was Starday. I can't remember the other two except that one was dark blue. The discs were 45rpm, and extended play with two songs on each side. One side with two songs had one by Cowboy Copas; "I Touched the Hem of His Garment" and The other by Stringbean; "Workin' on a Building". To be honest I am not really certain that my "passion" gospel song was by the Phipps Family but they were represented in this collection. I have searched high and low for the discs and can't find them anywhere. In truth I don't recall having seen them for about fifteen years. They weren't where I remembered them being (of course) they're probably right next to my extra set of trailer keys which I also can't find. Dang! I got old quick! CB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Mar 04 - 05:37 AM There is another Phipps Family discography at a page called Women in Country Music. There are several titles that seem to be about the Passion, especially in the album "Old Time American Gospel Music." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Coyote Breath Date: 09 Mar 04 - 09:18 PM Thanks Jim. I think you are right. Alone My Saviour Died For Me might be the one. Now I need to find a source for the words. CB |
Subject: Lyr Add: TOO LATE (from Roy Shepard) From: Coyote Breath Date: 26 Mar 04 - 03:33 PM In case anyone is interested I finally found the record that had the song I was concerned with. It was from Starday's Hall of Fame Series. SEP-165 (a 45 rpm disk with 6 songs, three on each side). I was wrong about the artist. The performer was Roy Shepard. The title was "Too Late". This song squarely places the blame for the execution of Jesus where it rightfully belongs; on all of us! Here are the words: "Too Late" One morning just at daybreak The sun it would not shine They crucified the saviour This deed was yours and mine He died to save the world from sin He showed his love for all They wouldn't believe He was the one Who came from heaven above Chorus: The day is surely coming When He will come again He'll stand upon the throne of God To judge the souls of men Too late to say "I'm sorry" Too late to run and hide Too late to ask forgiveness Too late my brother to cry They mocked Him and they scorned Him They even pierced His side The water and blood came pouring down The sins of all to hide But still He uttered not a word He knew He had to die The awful shame the Saviour bore The sins of men to hide Repeat chorus: The tune is "Knoxville Girl", pretty much. The cut is done in nice, tight three part harmony, typical of early bluegrass. I found the record down behind some books in a seldom used bookcase I was culling for the up-coming library rumage sale. I like the song. The tune is strong, the harmony is well assembled and the over all sense of the words convey the Passion of the Christ with as much impact as Mel Gibson's film, and without what I now think is a great deal of pointless violence. Thanks to all who lent assistance. I could make a CD copy of the song should anyone care for a copy. PM me for details. CB |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: A song about Christ's Passion From: Com Seangan Date: 26 Mar 04 - 08:01 PM I'm not sure if this is ad rem. But the song about Christ's Passion that put the hair standing on my neck every time I hear it is "Caoineadh na dTri Muire". Tomas Mac Eoin gives a moving version of it - and never sings it the same way twice. |
