Subject: In Cyprus From: Roj Date: 16 Mar 04 - 05:49 AM Brian and Marion Rodgers aka "No Worries" (www.no-worries.me.uk) will be in Paphos, Cyprus April 18 - 25 2004. Is there anywhere we might play on the island, please? We play acoustic music with 2 part harmonies. Our repertoire is varied - English and American Teaditional and Contempoary Folk, Ragtime and Blues. We're thinking of folk clubs, restaurants, barsand hotels as possible venues. Look forward to hearing something from someone, somewhere (preferably in Cyprus!) |

Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: fretless Date: 16 Mar 04 - 04:10 PM There are summer concerts in the ancient theater of Kourion on Cyprus. Weather wise, April could count as summer although the locals don't think so and my recollection is that the Kourion concerts don't start until later in the season. It's a great venue but I have no idea who handles the bookings. Nor do I recall ever seeing a nonlocal folk concert there. Some of the hotels around Paphos offer music during the seson (which begins around Easter), but again it is mostly local (i.e. Greek-style) music with bookings arranged through the individual hotels. Well, that was no help...but it was fun to conjure up memories of that beautiful island. So thanks and have a great trip. |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: GUEST,Jim McCallan Date: 16 Mar 04 - 10:19 PM Here is a list of bars taken from the Cyprus Yellow Pages: Click A phone-call to one of the bars that has music may help, in either talking to the guy in charge, or to find out who books the music there. It would be a start, anyway |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: Linda Kelly Date: 17 Mar 04 - 03:46 AM I grew up in Cyprus - I seem to remember that they were tryng to kill us at the time -never been back funnily enough. |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: Folkiedave Date: 17 Mar 04 - 04:21 AM THere might be a chance at the bases, Akrotir and Episkopi, and there is a pub at the R and R place in the Troodos mountains. IF you can find out who does the booking and IF you can get let in. I saw Dave Burland at Akrotiri once, but that was an arranged tour by Forces entertainment. Regards, Dave www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |

Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: CamiSu Date: 17 Mar 04 - 04:43 PM I sang at a few clubs in Cyprus when I was an exchange student there, but I must admit, I couldn't even tell you where they were, now. In the Turkish area, though that has changed since I was there, as well. It WAS 1971... CamiSu |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: GUEST,BIG ANDY Date: 17 Mar 04 - 06:00 PM I'm not kidding here but ask the taxi driver's around pathos, they'll take you to a restaurant just out side the town, the last time I was there it was about £10 all in food and drink. Then you watch the Cypriot, folk dance then there's a bit of a play around, a good night and cheep. Do watch the wine it hit's like a lump hammer when you get out side. |

Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: GUEST,sorefingers Date: 18 Mar 04 - 05:58 PM Don't think it is any help, but is this not the worst time for singing in Cyprus? It appears the issue of re-unification is being discussed and many Greeks are hoping to get their houses back from Turks who took them when the Island was invaded. |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: fretless Date: 19 Mar 04 - 09:53 AM Sorefingers: the reunification talks appear to be going relatively well (at least as compared to previous years) and folks are guardedly optimistic about the outcome. Paphos, also, is about as far from the Green Line or Greek-Turkish border as you can get on that small island. Plus, the tourist trade, which would provide the main audience for Brian and Marion's mix of "English and American Teaditional and Contempoary Folk, Ragtime and Blues," is pretty much unaffected by the sorts of negotiations that are going on currently. And what a thrill to be on the island if the talks are successful! |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: Dartford Warbler Date: 16 Sep 06 - 12:56 PM Got to see some 'traditional' dancing and music at the hotel where we stayed in Latsi. Realise that this thread was started a while back, but wonder if any of the newcomers to Mudcat have any experiences of 'folk'music availabilty in Cyprus (eg. Cypriot, 'British', Americana) particularly in the western side of the island? |
Subject: RE: In Cyprus From: Ed T Date: 16 Apr 14 - 11:40 AM Upating an old thread. "This year marks four decades since the Cyprus National Guard staged a coup that led to Turkish military intervention and escalated the civil war between the Greek and Turkish communities on the island. After the ceasefire, a heavily restricted buffer zone, controlled by the United Nations, was established between the north and south. It stretches 180 km (112 mi) across the whole island measuring 7.4 km (4.6 mi) at its widest and 3.3 m (11 ft) at its narrowest point. The demilitarized zone is restricted to the general public and no Greek or Turkish Cypriots are allowed inside. Reuters photographer Neil Hall recently visited the buffer zone, which still contains crumbling relics of times gone by - abandoned houses, businesses, and even an airport - crumbling snapshots of Cyprus in 1974.
