Having heard The Waifs on the BBC Folk Awards I put them on a list on 'wants'. Luckily a friend of mine recenlty visited Aus and picked up a copy of their 'Up All Night' album.

It is great. Vikki and Donna Simpson's voices reminds me in many ways of Michelle Shock's singing but add an Aussie twang, lovely.

The guitar, and mandolin playing is superb and at times very bluesy.

Good lyrics all written by the bands own members and very powerfull too. My particular favourites were Lighthouse, Fourth Floor, and Up All Night.

Any catters seen them live?

Missed them live when they were in Sheffield recently, but they seem to tour here a lot.

Their CDs are available in the UK incidentally, from amazon among others.

All the best

Yes...I purchased Up All Night from the Public Radio Music Source online after hearing one song and I wasn't disappointed in any way. My favorites are Highway One, Fisherman's Daughter, Lighthouse Man, and London Still. It's been one of my favorites of the year. Infectious songs of youth, living, and travel. Their guitar player - all acoustic, is uncommonly fantastic.

I first heard them on Oz national youth radio Triple-J when the station had their album as CD of the Week. The first few times I heard their songs I thought they were a bit bland, but after a few more listens I began to see much more depth in what they do. The Lighthouse song is bluesy in a laid-back way.

Another Oz group to look out for is the John Butler Trio. That's is the next album I'm planning to buy. Their single Zebra is also bluesy in a modern way.

Shanghaiceltic,

BUTLER, JOHN TRIO: SUNRISE OVER SEA

This is an Australian CD online store. You may find it somewhere closer to where you live.

I have to admit that because of a financial in the last few months I haven't bought the CD yet so I have seen the single on the Music Video programmes and haven't heard the whole album, but I am listening to the tracks and wishing I could just rush out and buy it right now.
