Hi, Tom. I did a little looking; couldn't find it.

You should start a new thread with words from the song in the thread title. People will be more apt to see it.

Thanks for the lyrics, Desert Dancer's Friend.

Bob, do you know of a place where I can hear or read the melody? ABC or sticks & dots will do.

I couldn't find it on YouTube, for one place.

An old favorite of mine, originally learned from an Uncle Eck Dunford record, Vi 20880, recorded in Bristol, Tennessee with backing by Ernest Stoneman and his band on July 27, 1927. (Courtesy of Joe Bussard's fabulous collection of old 78s.)

I've performed it before a live audience, who seemed genuinely confused by the "whippoorwill!" calls. Still it's a beautiful old song.

Dunford called it "The Whippoorwill Song." It is originally "Call of the Whippoorwill," words and music by J. Calvin Bushey, circa 1889.

It was also recorded as "Call of the Whippoorwill" by the Stapleton Brothers in Atlanta, April 19, 1928.

It's one of several whippoorwill songs written in the late 19th century. (Another is "The First Whippoorwill Song," recorded by Lulu Belle and Scotty (among others) as "The Whippoorwill Song." Titles can be confusing.

I 'd be interested in the history of this song if anyone knows it. The use of the "lay" hints that it's old, but is it really?

Whippoorwill Song

As I wandered by the wooded hills
Where the evening shadows play.
To hear the song of the whippoorwill <>
As he sings his evening lay.

Chorus:
O list' (whippoorwill) his song (whippoorwill)
It floats (whippoorwill) along (whippoorwill);
Now brave (whippoorwill), now gay (whippoorwill)
We hear (whippoorwill) his lay (whippoorwill).

O' softly trills his evening lay
As shadows roll along.
A sad lone feeling around me comes <>
When I hear his evening song.

It brings to mind the old, old home
So many miles away.
And dear old friends that I often hold <>
Against his evening lay.

Chorus:
O list' (whippoorwill) his song (whippoorwill)
It floats (whippoorwill) along (whippoorwill)
Now brave (whippoorwill), now gay (whippoorwill)
We hear (whippoorwill) his lay (whippoorwill)

Chorus:
O list' (whippoorwill) his song (whippoorwill)
It floats (whippoorwill) along (whippoorwill)
Now brave (whippoorwill), now gay (whippoorwill)
We hear (whippoorwill) his lay (whippoorwill)

Dan

I know the chords and key but can't get all the words. My hearing is so damned bad, I would appreciate it, Becky. It is a beautiful song.

My bandmate has been trying to get us to do this song (and we have resisted); he's worked it up on autoharp. I know he's got it all transcribed. I'll get him to take a look in here.

well, here's the chorus anyway:

Oh listen whippoorwill
His song whippoorwill
It floats whippoorwill
Along whippoorwill
How long whippoorwill
Now brave whippoorwill
Now gay whippoorwill
Reveal    whippoorwill (?)
His name whippoorwill (?)

It's difficult to understand Ms. Stoneman, I'm afraid, what with my poor hearing...

There are several songs so called to be found in the Forum. It might be one of those, or the following from _The Coffeehouse Song Book_:

Whippoorwill sing to me,
Of a tall straight gum and an old oak tree,
Where a young boy's mind climbed so free,
Whippoorwill won't you sing to me, please sing.

Robert White whistle loud,
OF a sleeping land that I once saw plowed,
Where I saw my first snake in a puffy white cloud,
Robert White won't you whistle loud, please whistle.

Bullfrog, bullfrog, you're gettin; mighty bold,
Won't you whoop one time in my old swimmin' hole,
Where you jumped from the reach of my long gettin' pole,
To save the voice that soothes my soul, bullfrog soothes my soul.

Well I'll never see the tall gum or this old oak tree,
This fast old world, now she's a blindin' me,
Or I'll never swim again at my old swimmin' hole,
Or hear the whoop that soothes my soul, please come again to me,
Please come again to me.

Written by John Graves (Shreveport, La.)
