An old favorite of mine, originally learned from an Uncle Eck Dunford record, Vi 20880, recorded in Bristol, Tennessee with backing by Ernest Stoneman and his band on July 27, 1927. (Courtesy of Joe Bussard's fabulous collection of old 78s.)

I've performed it before a live audience, who seemed genuinely confused by the "whippoorwill!" calls. Still it's a beautiful old song.

Dunford called it "The Whippoorwill Song." It is originally "Call of the Whippoorwill," words and music by J. Calvin Bushey, circa 1889.

It was also recorded as "Call of the Whippoorwill" by the Stapleton Brothers in Atlanta, April 19, 1928.

It's one of several whippoorwill songs written in the late 19th century. (Another is "The First Whippoorwill Song," recorded by Lulu Belle and Scotty (among others) as "The Whippoorwill Song." Titles can be confusing.

I 'd be interested in the history of this song if anyone knows it. The use of the "lay" hints that it's old, but is it really?

My bandmate has been trying to get us to do this song (and we have resisted); he's worked it up on autoharp. I know he's got it all transcribed. I'll get him to take a look in here.
