Subject: Tune Req: Oopich (sp?) waltz, old time fiddle
From: twingles

Looking for some new tunes for my 10 yr old son to play in an old time fiddle contest. This was recommended, but I can't find a trace of it! The name relates to an owl, I think. Ring a bell for anybody? Looking for the tune and/or a recording. Thanks!!

It's the Ookpik Waltz, and there's an old thread about it here, including, I believe, the tune. "Ookpik" is apparently a native Alaskan (Inuit?) word for "snowy owl."

Aloha,
Mark

There's a tune called The Ootpik Waltz on Wild Asparagus' CD Tone Roads. The tune is also in one of the volumes of The Waltz Book (can't recall which one).

Ookpik stuffed owls used to be in stores here in Canada. Haven't looked, but probably still available.

I wonder if the name comes from trying to ask for a "toothpick" when you have a mouthful of stuffed owl...

Aloha,
Mark
(expecting a hail of snowballs from up North)

Official Notice to Mark Cohen, revoking his Honorary Canadian Citizenship Certificate....

Mark, I have been trying to remember just how the Ookpik doll popularity came about. It was a promotion of some kind. I know we suckered and bought a couple to give to kids. My wife thinks we may have one, and is digging around in the basement looking for it.
