JACK HUDSON HaS as great a voice for country music and Americana as Pavarotti has for opera -plus he's a terrific acoustic guitarist. Any suggestions how we can tell the world about him

Is this the Jack Hudson from Merseyside who I recall singing 'Did you see John Hurt' with brilliant guitar, it seems like an awful long time ago!

Jack is indeed a Derbyshire lad, lives in a place called Kilburn. He still records and does gigs but nowhere near enough. Still the same 'Velvet Gravel' voice and classy guitar-playing. A very nice, self effacing, and HUGELY talented guy. He was a folk-icon in the late-60's & early-70's, played just about everywhere that mattered and made radio appearances, he ranked alongside the best of British artists.

Way back he was a great afficionado of Gordon Lightfoot, Paxton, Kristofferson, Jackson Brown et al. Nowadays he mostly performs self-written material which is a fusion of folk, blues and country, and very good, but if you ask him nicely he'll stick a golden oldie in such as 'Early Mornin' Rain' or 'Me & Bobby McGhee' for old times sake.

I'm very proud to say that he kindly gave me one of his songs, 'Driftwood and Nails', which I perform as often as possible.

If you're a club organiser, BOOK THE GUY! He's still a great performer. His website is:

I suppose the thing that did it for me was when Roger Brooks died last year. Suddenly it hit me that these people aren't going to be around for ever .. You think somehow their turn will come - but it never does.

Every night and all day the corporate crap oozes out of the tv and radio. surely nowadays when the technology is so comparatively cheap we should have our own tv channels and record companies and radio stations. And I don't mean something like that bloody awful folk roots musics for zulu satirists and Armenian storytellers. I mean the genuinely dispossessed - English folksingers , without major record company interest.

Jack Hudson is one of those artists whose voice is so great it creates a frisson of pleasure from the first note, and where is he on the festival cast lists. Cambridge with all its creative opportunities would be too much to ask - the stage is always too full of clapped out 70's rock and rollers. However what about Stainsby just down the road from where he lives, or half a hundred other folk and acoustic festivals in the midlands.

I had a lot of time for Jack way back when, but I heard him on the radio a few years ago and was disappointed. I felt he was - material-wise - stuck in the past. But maybe he had asked to do some of the more obvious things.

Jack recorded a new album last year. Some absolutely stunning songs that were published by an American publisher almost straightaway - but remain on that publishers shelf. he also had a song in the country airplay charts about two years ago - a comedy song Buster the Line dancing Dawg.

Creatively he is still very much on the ball and you can see him perform, at the Loughborough Acoustic club on May 20th. You won't be disappointed.

Jack Hudson will be playing at The Doghouse in Loughborough on Thursday May 20th 2004. The venue is great and the sound will be spot on. How to find it: The Doghouse is down the left hand side of The Greyhound which is on Nottingham Road. Follow any signs for Nottingham in the town and you are bound to go past it. It is on the right hand side of Nottingham Road on the way out of town. If you pass the railway station you have gone too far. There is a small car park and a few side streets nearby to park in. Hope that helps. howard@acousticnotes.org.uk

We have loved Jack's music for years. Went to see him in Sandbach 2 days ago. His songs are just so sensitive to experiences we have all had and his voice so strong. Have too many favourites to name but Driftwood and Nails and If I could only fly never fail to move and Saying Goodbye brings tears.

He doesn't perform very often now so we have to travel quite a way to see him. Most memorable was when we went to Cheltenham and he was the support for DeCameron. We have ben trying to persuade him to record some of his songs just as he sings them. Agree with you about the festivals. Would love to see him being given a chance. What a talent!

Interesting to see peoples comments about Jack Hudson, I can recall the Cambridge (Folk)Festival from back in the 80s when he did a spot in the club tent, the only time they would give him to perform was 4 in the afternoon to an audiance of 10! The rest of the night was full of talentless 3 chord time wasters.
For some reason there was a reluctance to book Jack at the more local clubs and most of his gigs you would have to travel if you wanted to see him.
If ever there was a waste of pure talent then he has to be at he top of the list! Partly down to his stubborn believes and partly down to pure bad luck.
Jack would always play at my old folk club at least 3 times a year & the number of new songs he taught me is beyond my recall, Guy Clark, Jimmy Buffet, Lightfoot,Van Zant the list could fill this page.
In November 2000 I went to Toronto to see Lightfoot at Massey Hall, whilst there I took a copy of Jacks new CD to Lightfoots office, I went in the afternoon and Lightfoot had been there that morning    (again bad luck) I left a copy and requested he listened to the quality of the songs. As far as I know there was never any come back but at least I tried.Jacks own songs are true to life experiences for I know for a fact he has had some very hard times, I think that is why his own penned songs have depth and reality to them. Not seen or heard Jack for a couple of years now but hope to put that right in the very near future.Jack shares a passion for quality American guitars and many a night we used to sit and play, sometimes til dawn
or til the whisky bottle was empty.None of us are getting any younger
"oh to have sung another song on Susans Floor"

I should be able to get to the Brewtown tomorrow. I first met Jack about 36 years ago!! Met him many, many times for some years, but haven't seen him for ages.
I assume he's still got his Epiphone Texan - it was his trademark at the time, together with his wonderful laugh and terrific voice.
I can't wait to see him again. I'll bring my old Guild D55,'cos he used to love playing it, tho' since I'm not known at the club, I may not get a spot!

My god Dave Bennett there too - I remember you playing at Dave sampsons club at the Roebuck in Erdington - you were pretty flash even in those days. Do you remember that night - there was Mick Stuart and the New Modern Idiot Grunt Band. I ordered a guitar off Rob Armstrong not long after

I'd give a lot to be there tomorrow.

all the best for a great night

Dave, Jack does still have the 'Epi', but you're unlikely to see it tonight - he regards it as too precious to take to gigs nowadays. Will you wish him all the best from John (Gainsborough) please? I'd like to be there but it's a long drive plus it's our club night tonight.

Stewie - look at Jack's website, just do a search on Jack Hudson (I haven't got the hang of blue clickies yet, sorry). His latest album's on there, but his old albums (Headlights & Footlights is the one I remember, but there are others) have gone the way of all flesh now.

When will the world wake up to this guy?

I *thought* this name was familiar. Back about 1977 or 78 he crashed at my basement apartment in Albany, New York, and I gave him a ride to a gig at the Chelsea House coffeehouse in Brattleboro, Vermont. I'd often wondered how things turned out for him. He probably won't remember me, but send him my regards, when any of you folks see him. (Back then I was Mary Linebaugh.)

I was very grateful then and still am and tried to 'pass it on', as you told me to.
I'd never seen snowfall like it, on the way to The Chelsea House. You must recall, we had to stay over and had a careful but beautiful drive back the following day.
Thanks again Mary. Take care, hope you and yours are well and happy.
Love. Jack.

I went with Brenda, as I promised. Jack was brilliant, as I expected, and the whole evening was very friendly; fewer people than I might have expected but these Bank Holiday weekends are unpredictable, as any folk club organiser can tell you!
Well done to the Brewtown Club.
Couldn't have been made more welcome.

Just as I thought, the story never changes, so many people out there shouting the praises of this guy but can't be bothered to get off their butts to go and support him.

If you want to wait til he's playing on your doorstep you may have to wait a long time.I would have thought the Brewhouse club would have been full, it's not that big a room.

OK lets be possitive, if a Jack Hudson concert was to be organised say for October 2004 somewhere in the Midlands how many people would commit to going and maybe bringing 2 or 3 people with them?
This would give 4 months to organise and get the word round.I would be prepared to organise and finance this if there is enough support, maybe we can arrange for a recording of the concert to be taped to satisfy those out there wanting an actual CD of Jack doing his songs in an as he performs them format.
Hopefully we could invite club organisers to come and see just how good Jack Hudson is.

This could be a way we could all help to get Jack the recogniion he justly deserves.

I await your comments.

Hi "Old Mate"
Sounds like a good idea to me. Hope it can be arranged. It would certainly be very interesting to get together with a crowd of Jack's friends and supporters.(I suppose someone had better ask him if he's interested!)
I saw him at the Brewtown Club last friday and his Sandbach gig a few weeks ago. Both excellent
I was a resident singer at the New Xpress music venue near my home here in Dorset for many years and Jack was a regular guest. Sadly declining attendance led to closure 2 years ago. Now I have to travel to see him but more than happy to do it whenever possible.
He's in Eastbourne on 4 August. Only a 200 mile round trip this time!
Regards

Malcolm

I phone Jack and keep him informed of the thread and and any developments. It would be nice if somehow we could translate our good wishes for this great artist into gaining him some kind of recognition.

it is difficult to commit to a gig months in advance at a venue we ain't sure of.

personally I am convinced, he needs either a prominent artist to record one of his songs - either that or exposure of his singing talent at a major festival like Cambridge and I don't mean 10 minutes in the club tent. God knows he deserves that spot on the main stage.

If anybody out these has access to movers and shakers that book Cambridge, Glastonbury or whatever - that is what Jack really needs. as it is they should be bitterly ashamed of neglecting a voice of such stunning beauty.

Its at the beresford Hotel. You go to the centre of ashbourne, look for a road out to Buxton and there it is. He is support act to an American. I think I put the details on the Jack Hudson gigs thread. Im not sure how you go about getting tickets. Perhaps the beresford would know.

Also Pete Thom has given him a gig at Mansfield Folk Club which is at The Brown Cow in Mansfield on Tuesday nights. I think it might be near Christmas, but I haven't got the details.

I will post them when i have.

I've wondered about this.

It seems very strange, doesn't it. After all, you and I John we're not bad guitarists - but guitar playing is something you can put there if you work at it.

A voice like Jack's though - its a once in a generation thing. I really think there are a lot of people who aren't picking up their responsibilities in the media etc. and bringing this fine artist to the forefront. In a few years there will be diminishment of those great powers.

Its like we had a Pavarotti or a Paul Robeson in this country and we thought no sod it, we'll put the best of the Smurfs on tonight AGAIN

Yep, you're right WLD. And, as often happens with great singers, Jack's voice has improved with the years - back in 1970 I'd never have believed it could get any better but it certainly has, and how! Perhaps if he was a 20-year-old, pretty-boy, pale-pink Gareth Gates wannabe he'd have more luck.....................??

It's a shame, too, that his old albums aren't available any longer. Great performances of excellent songs lost for ever.

Why should they be, there must be hundreds of people out there with vinyl albums, why can,t someone get permission off Jack to allow them to be transferred to CDs and then decide what to do.

I would gladly do the transferring at zero cost (see vinyltransfer.me.uk) can't do blue clicky things, and this is not an advert for my services, just letting you know this is a genuine offer.

Just a thought anyway.

I know you said it's a very small room. i have a couple of baby p.a's- Fender Passport jobs the 150 watt and the 250 watt jobbos.

Would you like that, or my weapon of choice is a 500 watt Peavey thing - which isn't large. However if you fee they are superfluous I will understand.

You are booked WLD.

It is accoustic. So you will be able to leave them all behind. If people could hear you at Tattershall, they will be able to hear you at MRFC.

The only time amplification is needed is when I book an artist who is singing all the time professionally, and if they say they want amplification, then I allow it. e.g. Bob Fox & Vin Garbutt.
