Subject: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: harpgirl Date: 11 Apr 04 - 06:36 PM We have quite a bit of material on Ollie Gilbert but the threads are not linked together. I would like to link all of her material to this thread so her name is accessible. And it would be a good spot to add reminiscences. I was given Volume 16, Number 2 April-May 1966 SINGOUT! magazine today by my friend whose father just passed. The cover is a picture of the Rackensack Tribe of Timbo Arkansas. There is a nice article about the Mountain View Folk Festival which is coming up again next weekend which mentions Ollie Gilbert, Neal Morris, Bookmiller Shannon, and the Morrison twins. The festival began in 1963 as proclaimed by Governor Orville Faubus. |
Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: GUEST,Dale Date: 11 Apr 04 - 08:38 PM And I expect you're not coming again, right? :( But IF you do make it on Friday, stop by Room #3 in the Administration Building and say, "Hey!" We'll give you the Grand Tour, including a face-to-face with Aunt Ollie's portrait over the fireplace. Don't forget, Ralph Stanley will be there Saturday night but I don't know where we stand on ticket sales. That one is going to be sold out, and may be already. |

Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: GUEST,Dale Date: 11 Apr 04 - 09:49 PM Check for more recordings at the John Quincy Wolf Collection at Lyon College, Batesville, Arkansas. These are mostly older recordings than at the Max Hunter site, hosted by Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Missouri. And as you will see from this release, there are more on the way, thanks to Leo Rainey. |

Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Apr 04 - 12:45 AM Hi, Harpgirl - for now, I can link a thread to only one group. As far as I can see, the mentions of Ollie Gilbert are threads on songs not sung exclusively or written by Ollie Gilbert. Many are already linked with other groups. Although I can't group all the Ollie threads together, I can give you this search link: (click here to search for Ollie Gilbert). -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: GUEST,Dale Date: 12 Apr 04 - 10:34 AM I lied. Her portrait is NOT hanging in the lobby. It is out on loan at the moment. |
Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: harpgirl Date: 12 Apr 04 - 10:38 AM Well, Dale I will be a no show again this year. My folks have their fifty fifth wedding anniversay this weekend and they have asked that I celebrate with them. Time enough for the Festival when they have passed on....Have a great time. I may make a pilgrimmage to the Ozarks before the year is up however, and I will look you up. Abby |
Subject: RE: Ollie Gilbert: An Ozark Jewel From: GUEST,Arkie Date: 12 Apr 04 - 11:57 AM The festival mentioned is the Arkansas Folk Festival, often confused with the Ozark Folk Festival which is held in another town in the fall. The Arkansas Folk Festival is in Mountain View on the third Saturday in April and on the Friday that precedes it. Traditional Ozark music is played at the Folk Center and the Jimmy Driftwood Barn and there is also informal music all over the courthouse square and more contemporary music elsewhere in theaters around town. If you can't make it in April you will be welcome at any other time. For on non-festival days you will find music at the Folk Center, the Driftwood barn on Fridays and Sundays, all over the courthouse square and other theaters in town. The only real difference is that during the festival there's more music and more people. And Aunt Ollie, as she was known here, is an Ozark Jewel. She was a delightful person and enjoyed people. |
