Any suggestions of clubs with good atmosphere, blackboard, guest artists, is welcome. Also any good outlets where I can buy Australian folk music ? Thanks, Anne |
Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Joybell Date: 15 Apr 04 - 06:33 PM Hello Anne We are out in the Western district of Victoria. We'd love to see you if you want to call in. There are some good folk clubs in Melbourne and in the surrounding towns. I'll get a Melbourne friend of mine to come in on your thread. There are some really good cds available - people doing some great Australian music. Old fiddle tunes, songs. If you join here it would give us the chance to contact you with a personal message. It would simplify things. In any case I'll be back. Joy |

Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 16 Apr 04 - 10:18 AM Oz folk music is rather rare in CD shops, tho you can get UK & US stuff in large shops! However we have 3 great websites that sell Oz folk music - if you don't want to buy on-line they will at least show you titles & artists & all would have phone contacts. www.tradandnow.com (great magazine & found at many festivals) www.folktrax.com (SA Folk Fed own this & thye also hve a shop in Adelaide) I'm not sure of the address of Angeltrain (based in Canberra) but you would be able ot locate them using google or anzwers Folk clubs are listed on several websites - www.folkalliance.org.au - our National folk organisation is probably the best place to start. sandra |
Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Joybell Date: 18 Apr 04 - 12:54 AM Hello again Anne. My Melbourne friend is off somewhere but here's a start. The first two are ones I know well and used to go to before we left the city. The third is recomended by another friend. They are all very friendly people who welcome visitors. All have guest spots. Selby Folk Club - Meets at 8.00pm on the 1st Friday of each month at Selby about 30 kms. South-east of Melbourne. Victorian Folk Music Club - Meets every Tuesday night at 8.00pm, at Ringwood East, East of Melbourne. The 2nd Tuesday of the month is open to guest spots. Dandenong Ranges Folk Club - Meets on the last Friday of each month at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges East of Melbourne. They all have websites most easily found by using their names. Selby is wrongly listed under South Australia on one directory. There is also a great gathering called "Pickin' at the Piggery" (venue is an old slaughterhouse) in the Melbourne suburb of Footscray. It's dedicated to American traditional, bluegrass, old-timey, Cajun, etc. We are almost always there. It is held on the 3rd Saturday of most months at 8.00pm. When are you planning your trip Anne? Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Joybell Date: 18 Apr 04 - 01:22 AM Then there is a wonderful little club way up in the North-west of the state at Red Cliffs. If you want to go the distance I could chase them up for you. There is another in Gippsland South-west of Melbourne. There's a big Folkie community in the Central part of the state and I'm sure they would welcome a visitor too. Joy |

Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Hrothgar Date: 20 Apr 04 - 05:54 AM "Gippsland South-west of Melbourne" Was there an earthquake I didn't hear about? |
Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Golly Date: 20 Apr 04 - 08:24 AM Now Hrothgar don' be like that. Someday you'll make a mistake and feel the same unmitigated shame. Joybelle.... Gippsland is South-east of Melbourne or is it South-East? Remember we have played there and when we drove from Melbourne the evening sun was at our backs. The club is the Gippsland Acoustic Music Club and is a delightful venue run by the best people and operates one Sunday a month. It has been going for 20 years. If you perform and are visting Australia look them up or email Joybelle or me. |
Subject: RE: Which Folk Clubs ? Victoria, Australia From: Joybell Date: 21 Apr 04 - 06:36 PM OOps! It's me who's South-West of Melbourne isn't it? Thanks. The sun on your back! Yes better than in your face like the Irish blessing I've always thought. Joy |
