KISSING YOU GOODBYE
(John Denver)

Oh at first it was like heaven, in your heart and in your arms,
And paradise discovered in the sweetness of your charms.
Yes and everyday a miracle to awake and be with you,
And every night in your embrace another dream come true.

Oh but castles sometimes crumble, some rivers still run dry,
And fairy tales are witches tales when the truth becomes a lie.
And a pocket full of promises won't buy a diamond ring,
And every word you said to me just didn't mean a thing.

It's over now, you've gone too far, I can't take anymore,
Be careful now, don't hurt yourself when you walk through the door.
I can hardly stand to look at you, it makes me want to cry,
Get your tongue out of my mouth because I'm kissing you goodbye.

Oh I suppose I'll never know why things turned out this way,
And why the one you love the most is the one you drove away.
Yes and I suppose I'll never ever really understand,
How I could think that you'd make me a happy married man.

So now I sit and contemplate the reason for it all,
The climb to heights of ecstasy, the failure, and the fall.
If a broken heart is purposeful, its in the lesson learned,
But no matter what the reason, it hurts when you get burned.

Now I don't care, and I don't think I'll ever love again,
Kimo Sabe used to mean a good and trusted friend.
But now it stands for therapy and all the tears I've cried,
Get your tongue out of my mouth because I'm kissing you goodbye.
Bye, bye, goodbye,
Get your tongue out of my mouth because I'm kissing you goodbye.

This song has been attributed (in other threads) to Ray Stevens, who may have recorded it, but I have it on John Denver's "The Harbor Lights Concert" CD. The liner notes relate the story behind the writing of the song, and the credits clearly attribute the song to John Denver. The concert took place in September 1995, not that long before his death. The liner notes relate that there was some thought to putting the song on an album, but it was not seriously considered.

Here's another one:

KISSING YOU GOODBYE
Waylon Jennings

I've learned that "turn the other cheek" is not what love's about.
I've turned mine so many times that I damned near wore 'em out.
I've grown used to your abuse and I thought I'd never quit,
But I've woke up this morning, couldn't find my shiv-a-git.

You've always liked to play your games. Well, I got one for you:
Pretend we're playing checkers, girl, and it's your time to move.
You'll find your suitcase on the porch and a taxi in the drive.
Get your tongue out of my mouth; I'm kissing you goodbye.

I see you've finally made it home. You been out all night.
Your artificial hair's a mess and your clothes don't fit you right.
I've given and forgiven till there ain't nothing left,
But all you gave was just enough to satisfy yourself.

I can smell that whiskey in your hair and sen-sen on your breath.
If you ever tried to tell the truth, you'd choke yourself to death.
I don't want your nasty kisses and don't tell me no more lies.
Get your tongue out of my mouth; I'm kissing you goodbye.
Get your tongue out of my mouth; I'm kissing you goodbye.

John Denver's song was named after a book of the same title written by Cynthia Heimel. He wrote the song in late 1994 or early 1995, just prior to recording the WILDlife Concert in February 1995. There, during intermission, he performed it live for an audience for the first time ever. I have never found out that there were already two songs with the same line written sometime in the 1980s just a few weeks apart, one was by Ray Stevens, the other by Waylon Jennings. I am not sure where I heard that, but it seems like both got their inspiration from a line that was sad in some comedy or late nite TV show.

Best regards
Jochen

The Ray Stevens song is a different song, though it has the same "hook".

I'M KISSING YOU GOODBYE
Ray Stevens

The first time we met, dear, you flashed that come-on smile.
Your steamy-eyed glances nearly drove me wild.
So we drove out to the country and parked beneath the stars
Where you fogged up my windshield and set my soul afire.

Well, you moved into my place that very same night.
I was so happy it was love at first sight.

But one day I came home early the very next week,
Found a man in my closet, said he's playing hide-and-seek.
Now, I may be stupid but I'll never understand
Why he was playing hide-and-seek with all his clothes in his hand.

Get your feet off of my table. Get your shoes from under my bed.
Get your hat off of my hat-rack and put it on your head.
Get your coat out of my closet and put it on your back.
Get your Ferlin Husky records, darling. It's time for you to pack.

Get your arms from around me. It ain't no use to try.
Get your tongue out of my mouth 'cause I'm kissing you goodbye.

Get your tongue out of my mouth and wipe off that silly grin.
Get your tongue out of my mouth. Ain't no telling where it's been.
Get your tongue out of my mouth. Don't try that again.
Get your tongue out of my mouth. (Mumble muffle mumble)

Let's just say "adios" with a kiss and a sigh.
Get your tongue out of my mouth 'cause I'm kissing you goodbye.

Well, the flame has flickered and the passion has cooled.
I hate to lose you, darling, but I won't be fooled,
'Cause you just can't be true, dear. You're spreading it around.
You shattered all that mattered. Gonna have to put you down.

Get your dog out of my dog house, your cat out of my tree.
Get your bird out of my bird cage. I'm setting you free.
Get your toothbrush out of my bathroom, your stockings off my line.
Get your curlers off of my dresser, darling. You ain't no friend of mine.

Get your arms from around me. I won't believe your lies.

Get your tongue out of my mouth. Come on now. (More muffled mumbling)
