Subject: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: greg stephens Date: 27 Apr 04 - 07:28 AM The Huggins family from Colorado have just being staying with us and are heading south for Cornwall as I write(Tuesday 27 April). They played in a session here and are looking for action. Doug, Corie and daughter Jenny, all players. They are clutching flutes, guitars, low D whistle and bodhran. Doug plays tenor banjo as well, but has only brought the guitar and whistles, couldnt carry everything on the plane. I would guess they would be in Cornwall maybe two or three days, then crossing the south to arrive Gatwick on Monday. Anybody with any advice on music sessions(songs or tunes), post it here and I'll pass it on. They are good folks, sing for their supper and do the washing up.They like staying in country pubs and looking at stone circles castles Roman remains Shakespeare etc. |
Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: Leadfingers Date: 27 Apr 04 - 07:54 AM The only session in Cornwall I could reccomend is the Wellington in Boscastle but that is Wednesdays . They made us very welcame there last week . There ARE other sessions but as we were only going to be ther on the one day I did not make a note of the others. |
Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: greg stephens Date: 27 Apr 04 - 07:58 AM Leadfingers can I double check on that. I have just been told the Wellington, Boscastle session is Mondays. So I didnt tell the Huggins about it. Wednesday there would be ideal I would think. Can you confirm that it really is Wednesday, and I'll ring it through to them. Cheers greg as someone who has played many gigs in the Wellington, (with the Boat Band). PS is Vic still the landlord? |
Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: treewind Date: 27 Apr 04 - 08:20 AM There's a few listed HERE - which I found when looking for the name of the Top House at the Lizard. Been to that one, good fun and your friends would go down well. Try googling for Trigg Morris and Bodmin folk club for some more pointers and contacts. Also you could ask Alan Collins - he plays concertina, his wife Linda sings and they are the first people I'd ask about sessions. Based near Penzance. Don't get me started on stone circles.... (The Merry Maidens near Lamorna are quite accessible) Anahata |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: Leadfingers Date: 27 Apr 04 - 08:58 AM Possibly the Monday Wellingon Bash is a tunes session and the one on Wednesday a song session , though they made Sorcha and I very welcome even though Sorcha only fiddles and doesnt sing at all. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: The Unicorn Man Date: 27 Apr 04 - 10:04 AM If you have time, go to St Ives Tourist Information centre and ask for Harry's Safari leaflet, ring him up and he can tell you everything and everywhere you will want. He is sort of a folk-a-fax ( Just like Breezy) If you don't have time go to The Western Hotel on Tuesday if you can, Songs, Tunes, etc. He will also give you a very good tour of stone circles and iron age sites, and pubs in his very interesting van. Book direct through him though to save money. |

Subject: RE: Sessions in Cornwall?? From: treewind Date: 28 Apr 04 - 06:11 AM Swinside - never heard of it. Doesn't sound Cornish. Now, Boscawen-un - that's a stone circle in active use by pagans now; in the middle of nowhere, no signposts, and my favourite. Museum of witchcraft? I missed that, but some of my Cornwall acquaintances would be amused to think that it belonged in museums... There's a good guide to pagan Cornwall written by Cheryl Straffon. You can buy it in some shops, or directly from the author, who works in the library at St Just. You'll find lost of stones, ancient earthworks and sacred wells there. Back to music: there used to be a session at the Gurnards Head Inn, but I hear it's no more. The pub is worth a visit for the food and scenery anyway. Anahata |
