hello I'm new here I posted once before as a guest asking about the origins of Follow me up to Carlow.

Anyways this is an old song my grandmother said her father would sing to her but she doesn't remember much of it. I don't know the title and she can't remember it either so I just call it " The Stranger " She can only remember a few fragment verses which are as follows:

May I sleep in your barn tonight mister?
It is cold laying out on the ground
For the old North Wind it is whistling
And I have no place to lie down
I'll tell you my story kindly mister
For it runs through my heart like a storm

Three years ago last summer
I won't forget that sad day
A stranger came out from the city
And he said that he wanted to stay

My wife and stranger, they have left and have taken my son
And Lord up in Heaven knows what that stranger has done

Does anyone know the complete song or anything else about it? Thanks :)

Hi Pogo

A (very) quick search on google, (typed the first line in inverted
commas) gave lots of entries. The first one I looked at gave me
this address.

http://www.smsu.edu/folksong/maxhunter/0667/

With full lyrics.

Hope it helps

Cheers

Cattail !

Thank you I very much appreciate it! :) I've always been very fond of celtic and folk music and I'm learning more than I ever thought possible about both from hanging around here. Do you know if this song has made it to any CDs yet?

All you have to do is run a search here for (for instance) sleep in your barn. It's been discussed a number of times before. The onsite search engine isn't very hard to find: see the top of every page.
