Interesting thread to read through, could someone précis what was going on there??! I've being playing in clubs and sessions for years and have enjoyed everything from three to a hundred and three in a club. I went to an 'open mic' in Hebden Bridge last night. It was almost alternative, but plenty of songs, the odd poem, double acts closely associated with 'folk' but light hearted and fantastic fun. It's loosely organised and there must have been about eighty in the room. Are we beginning to take it all to seriously??

Congrats jOhn! Glad it went so well. Keep up the good work. You'll be surprised how quickly the next few years go. I can hardly believe my folk club will be 7 years old in November - and it all started as a result of a course I was doing. I had to do a project, and the folk club was it - it's very rewarding, as I'm sure you are finding out.

................REFRESH............
Hull Folk Club celebrated its 1st Birthday last Thursday, it was a brilliant night, with over 20 singers and musicians there, everybody [including me!] did at least 1 song/tune, we drank loads of ale and ate some cake!
During the year we,ve been going, we have loads of top performers there, including Greg Stephens, Kate Barfield, Nahro Zagros, Rory McLeod, Jim Eldon, Henry ayrton, Bill Sables, Punch the Horse, Pat Cooksey, Linda Kelly, El Ted, David Oaklet, Cowfish, Martin the Whistler and loads of people like that, playing all sorts of folk type music including skiffle, traditional irish tunes, protest songs, ballads, Flamenco Tunes, Blues songs, Kurdish Fiddle Tunes etcetcetc.

I'd like to thank everybody that has suppported us, especially them that came from far away [Greg, Kate and Rory etc], and especially them that have made the efoort to turn up every week, [Ted, Mick and Les etc].

Over the last weekend about 20 of us travelled to Nick_'s place at Far Lington for the weekend, it was brilliant, a full weekend of folk music of all types,by people of all ages everyone was made really welcome, its a brilliant pub, really well run, good ale at good prices, and I'd reccomend a visit to anyone [see link to pub website in Nicks post].

Nick coming over to UK in September from Tasmania AUS and as a coincidence will be travelling around your area. I will make a point of visiting your club at Farlington. I run a club here in our home town and I can understand the problems discussed in this thread well. So it appears to be a world wide provlem doesn't it. we are really catering to a niche market and number are small in comparison to the big picture, but Iif you work at it and get the info out to the folkies they will turn up. It took us a while but it is working now.

Following up Nick's thread, we had 14 at the Farlington Folk club last night (beer still £1.22 a pint)and an excellent evening was had by all - but still no-one from Hull. What are you waiting for?!

The bitter is always £1.22 a pint - Sam Smiths pubs are always priced with the beer at happy hour prices (and it's real ale as well).

People are always welcome to come - if those of you stuck in Hull who are on their way to Selby are short of something to do wednesday I'm sure you would be made very welcome. You can always PM if you want any info or to check what's going on.

I would be interested in others views on the different/the best ways to organise singarounds so will be starting a new thread rather than continuing to take this one off topic.

(By the way it's not MY club it's OUR club - I was guilty of grumbling about that earlier in the year and would hate to give the same impression)

REPLAY
Surely it is about time that jOhn stopped fretting about the Hull F.C., came to terms with his patently obvious desire to succeed at the game and went to enjoy a round of the Old Royal and Ancient.
P.S. Nick, there is an enormous group of singers down here that will beat a path to your club and applaud everything if the session bitter is still £1.22 per pint!!

This is true, we even had a very happy two hours in a pub in Baldock at The Baldock Festival on Saturday where Morris Men and session people played and then we sung and then they played we sung, etc and both lots enjoyed it, we kind of took over the pub. And when we had fininshed one man was sad cos he enjoyed it so much. Mind you I like all the diffrent types of folk anyway, so I could not lose, but not everyone does. I also like Breezy and his funny ways, I was just saying if ALL clubs were like his, no one would be looking after the grass roots folk, which we ALL need to do,to keep it going. And to give Breezy his due he does run a Spotlight Club for the lesser know people as well.

Martin
There is room for both.
Market Rasen Folk Club is a bit like Breezy's style.
However, there are so many other clubs in the 30 mile radius who do singaround or sessions.
I personally think that we compliment each other.
The beauty is that if somebody has got to the level where they are confident to sing in front of an audience then they have that chance at my club.
I have normally about 9 artists playing on the night. Whilst there are bound to be adverse comments from people who do not like my style of club, I can honestly say that the comments I get from singers and audience are only positive.
At the end of the day, we are all putting lots of hours in FOC, to promote Folk Music.
Les

For god sake don't listern to Breezy, if you do what he says the grass roots folk won't beable to bloom and you will only have a false club that will only turn out for big names. Unless you have Breezys (how can I put it) negotiating skills, this could cost a packet, and also how then will we get the folkies for the future when all the big and old names have retired? We have Sing a Rounds every two weeks, and have built up over two years decent and loyal players, to keep the interest up we then offer a half hour spot to people who want to do more, and then we also have Saturday Night Charity Mic Nights with a big band, support acts and of course floorspots. We have other things planed as well. And any way I thought you Hullies we're well up for folk, we at The Bull in Barton le Clay Beds, want to come up in the Autumn to see you, and the Hummber Bridge. Any ideas of where to go?

Hugh - don't get me wrong, it's just that I'm not much of a 'sit and listener', I'm much happier as a 'joiner-in'. It took me years to discover that. I was a regular 'sit and listener' at Folk Union One at the Bluebell in Hull, although there would usually be lots of chorus stuff to join in with. As for my own performance, well almost anything could improve that. Also, since taking early retirement, I have to choose my nights out quite carefully. Hasn't live music got expensive?

El Ted - yes it's the one in High Street, the quite famous one with the lovely room at the front with the great acoustics. If you come, I'll let you play with my bouzouki!

Sometimes we get people coming from as far away as Halifax - Hull is nearer than that so why not come and join us one evening - Wednesdays 8.30 for 9.00 pm or whenever?

Trolls and flamers feed off the posts of those who attack them. There's an awful lot of troll food on this site, so you've only got yourselves to blame for their increasing numbers by providing a troll banquet. Don't feed them and they'll go elsewhere for sustenance.

I've noticed that John from Hull's posts seem to attract a lot of derogatory comments from 'GUESTS'. Some of you obviously know him personally, and are quick to come to the defence of a friend, which is admirable, but surely even you as his friends can see how some his posts are open to ridicule and so become a troll magnet. Anyone who starts a thread called 'Is Hull Folk Club Rubbish?' should realise they are not going to get entirely serious responces. A site that allows people to post as anonymous guests is open to abuse even more than most, so members just have to ignore trolls and flamers as much as possible, and accept that John's posts are likely to get many abusive 'GUEST' replies. I've also noticed that derisive comments directed at John from guests seem to upset John's friends much more than they upset John himself. Perhaps it's best left to John to reply to his critics. This way there would be a lot less trolling.
