Subject: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST,Penguin Egg Date: 10 May 04 - 08:37 PM Does anyone know of any recordings of Morris tunes. I have the Morris On thingy, but I don't like electric folk; so I am after something a bit more traditional. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST,ken johnson Date: 10 May 04 - 08:46 PM THE MORRIS RING used to sell acoustic morris tapes in the 70's. I remember one we used to practice to with Bert Cleever(?) on pipe and tabor. There is also Plain Capers by John Kirkpatrick which has been re-issued on CD. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: sledge Date: 11 May 04 - 01:54 AM Ashley Hutchings ever increasing family of Morris based cd's Morris On, Son of Morris on etc. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST Date: 11 May 04 - 02:25 AM Moulton Morris Men (Northants) have put out a CD, lots of songs as well, and tunes both electric and acoustic. A bit of everything. Albion Morris Men have a CD which I haven't listened to yet, but quite electric I expect. Check John Kirkpatrick's webpage. As well as Plain Capers, he has a solo box recording called Three In A Row, I think. Also a recent one of some of his original Shropshire Bedlam tunes, if my failing memory serves me right. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: mouldy Date: 11 May 04 - 02:39 AM Abingdon Morris Men's musicians have a CD out - "The Traditional Morris Dance Music Album": MCCD 376. It has majority Cotswold, with a few tracks from other morris traditions. It gives the Cotswold tradition being played on the notes. Obviously several of them are their own Abingdon tunes. Andrea |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: Anglo Date: 11 May 04 - 02:52 AM Oops, apologies. I was the last guest and had apparently tossed my cookie. Also, depending what you need there are several CDs of morris tune repertoire that have been issued by EFDSS I think (CDSS, formerly the American arm of that august society, carries them here is the US). I haven't heard them, but I suspect they would tend to be with solo acoustic instrument, depending on the particular tradition(s) for that CD. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 11 May 04 - 10:43 AM It depends to an extent just how "traditional" you want to get. EFDSS have a CD of the legendary William Kimber, which also includes some film of him. FolkTrax has a large collection of "field" recordings available, including William Kimber, Billy Wells and Stephen Baldwin. These were made in the 1940s and '50s, and obviously aren't "studio quality". Some of the players were pretty elderly by then, and their playing will be rather more rough than you may be used to. They are, however, the real thing. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: LindsayInWales Date: 11 May 04 - 11:42 AM Don't know if Letchworth Morris Men are still doing recordings, I've got their Bucknell pipe and tabor one and their tape of the Lichfield and Ducklington tunes... hope this helps. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 May 04 - 04:03 AM Albion Morris let one escape (rather than be released) last year, called, if I remember rightly 'Still dancing' (might have 'after all these years' as well). That's pretty trad stuff and has some scary pictures of the 'boys' when they were young and had more hair than stomach. LTS |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST,Dave Field Date: 12 May 04 - 06:25 AM Chippenham Morris Have a CD (and cassette!) of both live dancing at pub venues and "studio" sessions. For details try this link (if the clicky works!)Chippenham Morris Website Good listening, Dave |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: pavane Date: 12 May 04 - 06:31 AM 'The Art of William Kimber' was an LP of these 1940's and 1950's recordings. WELL worth listening to, just for the concertina playing. Maybe that's what's on the CD? |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: nutty Date: 13 May 04 - 05:37 AM Grand Union Morris have adouble album available for £10 CLICK HERE |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST,Rich Date: 13 May 04 - 07:02 AM Ashley Hutchings should be stopped! The first two morris on albums were fantastic but the two new ones are awful. By far the best morris album is Plain capers by John Kirkpatrick. |
Subject: RE: CDs of Morris Tunes From: GUEST,Greg Willis Date: 13 May 04 - 07:24 AM Another good CD of morris tunes is Sheepskins, also by John Kirkpatrick |
