Am planning to be in London for a seminar(s) May 26 & 27... am considering staying the night of the 26th (instead of heading back to Sheffield). Was thinking there must be at least one folk club going on that night -- anyone care to recommend one? (I prefer "sessions" that include singing to those that don't.)

Also, if anyone can recommend accommodations that *don't* cost an arm & a leg (B&B? Youth hostel?), 'twould be much appreciated...

Cheers,

YY

Cheers Breezy but us (OR&C) and Islington are Thursdays which is why I didn't reply ;-) unless I've got my days wrong!

Of the top of my head I can't think of a Wednesday thing in this part of London. Must be too busy on that night watching football.

Hang on, there's Romford but I don't have details to hand.

Yep, the 26th is Wednesday, but that's the night that Bedford runs:

Dr Faustus at The Gordon Arms, Castle Road, Bedford 01243 296519

Not much good though if YY's seminar continues in London the next day though...

How about Faversham? Simple to get back and there are three St Christopher's Backpackers in Borough High Street, London Bridge. Email: bookings@st-christophers.co.uk. Phone: 020 7407 1856.

As Kevin says, there's really nothing happening within the M25 that I know of on Wednesdays.

Vicky, There is the Tudor Barn at Eltham on Wednesday. 26th is a singaround with some tunes, it depends on who turns up. If you fancy it we could put you up in our caravan. (Sorcha seemed quite comfortable). We are only 10 minutes walk away from the station into central London. Otherwise there is a youth hostel right by St Pauls.
Linda

You should have received PMs from both Linda and myself, offering you the use of our 'Annexe' and transport to and from the nearby "Tudor Barn".

And I know that you know, breezy. I surmised that maybe you thought the 26th was a Thursday :-)

Anyway looks like Dave B may be offering entertainment in the distant SE of London/Kent.

Wot! Sarf Lunnon this time of night. Leave it out John!

Many thanks to everyone who's taken the time to answer (I have belatedly realised I prolly should have mentioned that I will be using public transport rather than driving) and special thanks to Dave & Linda for their kind offer of a bed!

Countess Richard, my seminar *does* continue the next day... why does it make a difference -- does the session run extremely late? (Just curious...)

Dave & Linda, will PM you. Again thanks to everyone -- I had a feeling Mudcat would be the perfect place to find out if there's anything on that night!

Cheers,

YY

YY: well, you'd be back in London at around half past midnight from Bedford (by train) but I thought it a bit bizarre to go half way back to Sheffield if you had to be in London again the next day. Faversham seemed to make more sense...

Anyway, BRIDGE

Take care in Sarf Lunnon...

Nothing in the diary for Romford - must be a Singers' Night. Train from Liverpool Street - travel card zone 6. Late trains and 24 hour bus service back to Central London.

Faversham (about midway between Rochester and Canterbury) is a long way from London - at least an hour or so each way from us, and we live right near the A20/A2 only just out of Kent. The FolkMob club at "The Tudor Barn", Eltham is just down the road and there are quite a few mudcat members: Woodsie, Dipsodeb, RockChick (& sometimes Bassic), Dave Kenningham, Melodeon King, and of course Linda and myself.

I'm sure we could squeeze you in for a night if you prefer something a little more northerly and decide on Romford. I might even come with you (although I had a vague impression that Romford was on Thursdays)

In the interests of not scaring people from venturing out to Faversham from London on Wednesdays, I'd like to point out that it's only just over an hour from Cannon Street or Victoria, from where you can pick up 24-hour buses to anywhere on your return.

It's well worth the trip which can be faster and far less stressful than just crossing London for a club or session.

According to EFN, Romford does meet on Wednesdays too at the Sun, London Road, but I haven't been.

Folk London lists Faversham and Romford for Wednesdays. 26 May is a Singer's night at Romford. I've not been but as far as I know, it's run by Monni Aldous, who sings in the Theatre Bar at Sidmouth, and has been responsible for songs like Clean Knickers Every Day, Electrical Plug-in Man, Such a very nice young man, Flake cake, and No bones in mushrooms....

It seems as though Vikki will be staying with us at Mottingham and therefore "FolkMob" at the "Tudor Barn" in Eltham is the most logical place to go.

It's an easy place to get to (map) by public transport - almost opposite Eltham Station and on plenty of bus routes. It's just off the A2 and South Circular Road - (and no more than 10 minutes from Blackwall tunnel, Liz). It's inside a park (Well Hall Pleasance) and really is a Tudor building - with part of a moat on one side - see here. It also serves a reasonable pint of London Pride and sometimes Shep's as well.

So any Mudcatters who would like to meet up with Yorkshire Yankee, why not turn up there on May 26th.

My apologies for not responding before now -- was trying to post earlier this eveniing, but Mudcat seemed to be down. I went off to a ceilidh (& met Sorcha & Emma B!) and fortunately Mudcat seems to have recovered in the meantime.

Again, thanks to everyone who's taken the time to post, and particularly to LtS & the Bryants for generously offering accommodation as well as info! With any luck, I'll get to the other clubs mentioned one of these days... Meanwhile, see some of you at the Yorkshire Gathering next weekend!

Cheers,

YY
