OK so I'm out by the maple tree in the back yard, flashlight in hand, showing my 8-year-old son the larvae swarming up the tree. He is less than impressed, but I am mesmerized by these creatures, in various stages of metamorphosis, slowly turning from a subterranean grub to a bizzare winged thing. In my revelry I hadn't noticed that some of the grubs mistook me for a tree, and were making their way up my pants legs. My son didn't even stay for the dance, but ran screaming into the house - he was more impressed at that point, I suppose. I only hope I can get him to come outside again sometime .....

Seriously, there is something primordial, macabre, profound and moving about the whole thing. Imagine emerging on a humid May night after tunneling through the ground for 17 years, climbing a tree, splitting open and turning into a completely different creature. Who says there are no miracles in the world?? They are also like little time machines, coming up where a tree was 17 years ago - it's uncanny. And it gives one pause.

I remember when they showed up in CT, in 1997, if I remember correctly. I'd never seen anything like it. As they stayed outside, I found them fascinating.(It would've been different if they'd gotten into the house!:-) Your description and thoughts are well put. Thanks!

One landed on my hand today looked at me and growled 3 times and flew away. Some sound like a woman screaming but when a a million or two get together its sounds like a 1950 flying saucer sound coming straight down from the sky in a whirling twirling pulse of constant wavering.

They taste a bit like asparagus. All protein and no fat or carbs.
The protein of the wings has welded onto my car where they have layed dead too long. Perhaps Nasa can look into a new tile glue formula from cicada wings.

Shoot, Iz been eatin'dem critters fir the las week... Tastes like chicken! Not... They is everywhere here in the Wes Ginny panhandle. I started a "cicada omlette" thread but I reckon it done fell off, jus' like their little carcuses are gonna do in about 3 weeks and they'll be thousands of 'em evrywhere you walk... Crunch, crunch...

Hey, what I don't unnerstand is this. Why? I mean I gotta a lottta respect for the Big Guy but cicadas? Come on, Godster... Let me see if I got this one right there, Big Feller. You go and create these critters who only have a three week shelf life every 17 years? I mean, all they do is come out of the ground every 17 years, climb to the tops of trees, lay eggs, make a bunch of noise, and in less than a month they're all dead and littering the roads like confetti? Hmmmm? Now, I gotta a lot of respect fir most of yer danged creations there, God, but this one has me shakin' my head... Well, don't feel bad. We all have those kinda days...

I used to be fascinated by the discarded husks of the cicadas when I was a kid, and would collect them. They look very neat, like little alien monsters of some kind.

I think even the District of Columbia may be hard pressed to match the summertime din found in Arkansas in the summer. You literally can't hear a conversation if you're outside in a campground around July and August. This is what my kids and I found in mid-Arkansas, around Lake Ouachita and the Hot Springs area. Everything is making a racket.

Here is the Washington Post cicada cam. It's dark right now, but today it was set by a tree and you could see a fence and the tree covered with the things.

If you can't beat 'em, eat 'em:

1/2 cup Old Bay® Seasoning

2 tablespoons salt

4 quarts water

1 (12 fluid ounce) can beer (optional)

8 red potatoes, quartered

2 large sweet onions, cut in wedges

2 pounds lean smoked sausage, cut in 2-inch lengths

8 ears fresh corn, broken in half

4 pounds large cicadas

Directions:

1. In an 8-quart pot, bring Old Bay, salt, water and beer to a boil. Add potatoes and onions; cook over high heat for 8 minutes.

2. Add smoked sausage to potatoes and onions; continue to cook on high for 5 minutes. Add corn to pot; continue to boil for 7 minutes. Add cicadas, cook for 5 minutes.

3. Drain cooking liquid. Pour contents of pot into several large bowls, shallow pails or mound on a paper-covered picnic table. Sprinkle with additional Old Bay if desired.

Actually the wings are not protein but are like our fingernails.

I have a huge colony of cicada killers out front. They are harmless bee creatures that burrow in the ground leaving a miniature volcano of dirt where the bees drag a cicada into the hole to feed them to tier young.

And that causes other cicadas, males and females, to fly towards that sound, because they think that it's a congregation of other cicadas for possible mating."
[Reporter] As a number of YouTube videos demonstrate, the phenomenon is not limited to weed whackers and lawn mowers, either. It's been shown to happen with electric saws, drills, and angle grinders. This year we'll find out if cicadas are drawn to hobby drone aircraft. Those didn't exist, in 1999, when the Brood V periodic cicadas last emerged. [Endquote]

Last but not least:
If the soil where these periodic cicadas have spent the last seventeen years has high levels of mercury -- any levels of mercury actually -- so have the cicadas, according to Dr. Kritsky and other cicada entomology specialists. Do you cicada-cookers want to eat mercury this summer??

Sorry, my mistake, take it back, after looking at an Ohio map. Xenia is located in Greene county, and is near Dayton and Springfield, both well to the western side of Ohio. This batch "brood V" of periodic cicadas is in eastern Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania. I should look to see if Max in State College is getting any Brood V cicadas.

Sorry, I was wrong about State College, Pennsylvania as well. They get periodic cicadas from other year-sequences, but NOT brood V, so they get off easy this summer.

A blogger named Dr. Shalaway in Cameron, West Virginia, reports that the birds have abandoned his bird feeders ever since Brood V Cicadas came out to mate; all he finds on the ground around his home -- around his bird feeders -- are "scattered remains of [cicada] wings." Not that the birds are keeping the population down much -- he reports the cicada noise is "deafening" since Memorial Day.

used to be on a site with a different name I believe.
Now it's part of a university website, for the US.

Worth comparing this more specific Brood X map with
the little map in the Newsweek article.

I note that periodic sightings of Brood X
are thick, right on top of the Mason-Dixon line
that used to separate Confederacy from Grand Old Republic
in the War Between the States, by whatever name you call it.

Also that once as far south as Tennessee or North Carolina,
the sightings are in the Appalachian Mountains
and well away from the coast/shoreline.

But look at the Atlantic shoreline further north:
the DelMarVa peninsula,
much of New Jersey,
and Long Island
can anticipate Brood X cicadas.

And what gives with
southern Indiana??

The answer is, cicadas are all about trees -- deciduous trees.
When they are underground, they aren't just anyplace --
they are attached to the roots of deciduous trees.
And the trees 'tell' them about the changing seasons.

The "Atlantic" piece implies that you wouldn't need to eat a lot of terminally fungus-diseased cicadas to get smashed - on a mixture of psilocybin and cathinone, which is a combo I have never heard of being used recreationally. One effect of khat (whose active ingredient is cathinone) in high doses is spontaneous ejaculation without orgasm, something like a waking wet dream.

Some Australians use cane toad soup as a hallucinogen. Mouldering zombie cicadas aren't much of a step further. We may need to get used to seeing American guys every 17 years walking around with butterfly nets and dilated pupils looking spaced out and dripping with sperm.

The effects of psilocybin are pretty well known in US culture. The effects of cathinone aren't.

The short life is probably why it hasn't seen much use in the US. I knew a doctor who used to work in Ethiopia and took regular internal flights. You had to squeeze yourself into your seat surrounded by sacks of khat. They had to get from farm to market in 24 hours. Ethiopian Airlines did a great job. But now Americans are going to get deranged cathinone-laden cicadas flying straight into their mouths they can play too.

I can't imagine what the psilocybin/cathinone combo would be like.

Early mornings are quiet and belongs to the birds but by 6AM the faint whirring begins in the woods and by afternoon you are engulphed in a sea of low whine. Up close a clicking faster than 30 per second can be heard. Only one made it into the house but disappeared to where only the cats know.

from Mother Nature and the weather cycle.

The cicada / nymphs emerge only when
the ground temperature is warm enough.
We had a hot spell this May, and they started coming to the surface.
Then it got cold, really cold, again.


So there are still uncountable quantities of Brood X Cicadas
underground, in the nymph stage,
waiting -- patiently or otherwise --
for the weather to make up its mind,
and to warm up enough so that
they can come out and

I had never before heard of
Connetquot River State Park Preserve.
The river in question, I believe, is limited to Long Island,
New York City,
which is the last place that anybody expected
any Brood X Cicadas to have survived all the urban development.

But Reuters News reports that at
this State Park Preserve on Long Island,
a few cicadas showed up this summer and started singing away.

The reports from Baltimore, Maryland say that
the cicadas are nearly done,
above ground anyway,
for another seventeen years or so.

My friend Andy paddles near the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh rivers. For several days, they were so loud they drowned out his tinnitus.

I know they're not cicadas - we have cicadas here in Oz too - but my goodness, I have been reading about mayflies, or fishflies.

We don't have them in Oz.
