Subject: Review: Market Rasen Folk Club 21st May Review.
From: Georgiansilver

I have to say we had another excellent evening of quality entertainment but there are a few personal observations I would like to make. People are welcome to agree or disagree with them.
Wherever I have been to Folk Clubs in the past... that have had resident performers...they have been the showpiece..the flagship of the Club and as such have had priority time over invited acts, usually a spot at the beginning and a spot at the end. The performance by Cara tonight showed true professionalism and merited a much longer spot at least. Perhaps you could consider this Les.
Jane played her guitar and sung with a voice so sweet that all would have eaten out of her hand!(Well I sure would have anyway)
Stitherum(Mike and Sue) showed their usual panache and presentation and I love those faces you pull Mike!!
John showed his usual professional approach and is appreciated by all.
De capo(hope that is spelt correctly) put on a great performance and I would hope to see them again at some point soon.
Mike and Jacky...A sweet voice from Jacky and such guitar playing as is rare to see these days from Mike.
Although the stars of the night were good, the quality of the other performers somewhat watered down their performance...as I have said before to all of you out there who have not experienced Market Rasen and Gainsborough Folk Clubs.....come and see for yourselves...you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Be Blessed.

Georgiansilver - Let me be the first to second your praises to the artists at Market Raisen Social Club on 21st May 2004. My personal favourites were Cara, Mike and Jacky. They had real talent that I love listen to with sweet melodies. I definately want to see them play again, buy Cara's CD and have it signed by them. I bet there are many others who came that night would agree.

What a wonderful wide range of entertainment there is in folk music and last night was no exception. GS we couldn't agree more.

I went to the Club for my first visit and was surprised at how good it was. I will go again in two weeks time.

Yep, a great night, my personal thanks to GS for his kind comments on my own part in it. People have their own tastes and as a performer I know it's not possible to push everyone's buttons, but it's gratifying to know that I've made the grade with one listener at least!

A few comments with (hopefully) constructive comments for the organisers:-

Cara were indeed excellent, what I wouldn't give to play in a band like that! I believe they're booked for a full night later in the year, but maybe they're worth a little longer spot on other nights?

Jane's return to the performing fold after a long lay-off is a breath of fresh air - a beautiful voice, nice guitar-playing, great songs, and much more talent than she seems to realise. Keep at it gal, we all like you and you can duet with me any time!

But please, please, please - give Mike and Jackie a break, put them on earlier before time starts to run out and they have to drop a song or truncate their spot. Mike's a fine guitarist and Jackie's a lovely (if a little nervous) singer, but each time they appear they get the thin end of the "Time Gentlemen Please" wedge. It doesn't help their performance or, I suspect, Jackie's nerves. They're a burgeoning talent and worth far more than that!

Here endeth the lesson. Donations in the box by the door as you leave please.

Johnny :0)

Yes, judging by the price-ticket suspended from the tuners! (Or is he just forgetful and never took it off when he bought it?) Do tell, Oaklet, tell us please, please, please!!!

I have had loads of conflicting opinions about the instrument. I bought it (or more correctly ruined a perfectly serviceable Hillman Avenger, ramraiding the shop) as a German 19th century copy of a Klotz, probably made by some sort of woodworking type person in a large hat. Someone else who knows about 18th century violins said (through heavy makeup barely concealing a five o'clock shadow) that is was a 1780 type of thing. Someone else said that the curly thing on the north end (then end furthest from one's gums) could have been made by Klotz him/herself and grafted on to a new fiddle to save quite a lot of bother.

Either way, it seems to do the job. A wag who no longer posts here wrote £1.10 on the repair label after one of its many visits to Andy the luthier to fill bullet holes inflicted by critics.

The label brings good luck. Shit - gotto go - the roof has just caught fire.

The Market Rasen Folk Club would be great value at £57.00 per night.

I thought the curly bit at the north end was rather reminicent of Buccinum's shell!
Frivolity apart - Mike and I very much enjoyed your playing. That slow air made me go quite unnecessary.

Many thanks for all your comments. I appreciate them very much.

Obviously it would be very wrong of me to make any comments publicly about any of the artists playing at my club. One thing I can't do is please everybody all of the time, but hopefully I can please most people most of the time.

I assure you that I keep in close contact with all the artists and if necessary work with them to develop their acts. There is a lot of hard work in the background to ensure that I deliver to you a night of excellent music.

As far as Mike and Jackie are concerned, I am working very closely with them, and am not aware of cutting them off last night. They did the amount of numbers they were expected to do. I plan to give them 45 minute spot in October. They are currently developing their act and they will get more air play as time moves on. Mike has difficulties giving me dates ahead, so I just have to wait an see what is possible.

Jane is working on building her act up again. Just give her time.

Lucy and Paul have already hit higher levels.

DACAPO were very good and local. I hope to be able to get them on a bit more in the future. With so many of them that is not easy to do :-).

What can I say about CARA, Stitherum and John Blanks. They are the backbone of the club and are true professionals. They fit into my time plans according to who is on on the night. Great people to be working with.

I am very proud of the artists who are playing at the club, who are all different in there own way.

Everything is looking very healthy for the future. If you know of any artist worthy of playing at the club, please let me know. Remember though it will be at my discretion.

I have a number of artists that I am currently trying to get to the club so watch this space.

Now that I am doing fortnightly events, I will be able to handle all the many artists who want to play, and hopefully give them more time depending on their level.

Just to bring you up to date with current developments:-

June 4th Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher from Boston (90 minutes)

Les, I do hope you take on board what I said about having a "resident band" at the beginning of this thread. Cara are worthy of being called a resident band and deserve more time than they get....I personally feel they should start the evening and finish it as your "Showpiece or flagship" and the rest of the evening be peformed in the gap.
They are a worthy band and should be recognised for it. On asking, I also understand that they make their way from Barton on Humber to perform....admirable...Please give them their due. Be Blessed.

Incidentally, for anyone who has not heard of "Cara".....such a sweet tune came from them last night as an introduction to their spot..A very old tune by all accounts...and one which they have truly mastered with guitar/fiddle and pipes....The first time in several years that I have heard the pipes and a violin in real sync...
One of the ecstacies of Folk music...Congratulations on a triumph of musical perfection lads!... Be Blessed.

Sounds like its so far so good at M R

May I make a point to Georgian that its not usually possible to be a resident band and the Main act all on the same night on a regular basis. As a one off yes maybe. One can have a surfiet. its good that you are indicating that you want more of them, it means the organiser has got it right.

GS I could say that about most of the artists, but they all know that, and understand the situation. They are all working together to give you the general public a right good night. I am sure you know that. I am working very hard to get these acts to you for your enjoyment, but I have to try my best to give other artists their chance as well, otherwise I will finish up with a club and only 2 or 3 artists.

:-)

Fine folks, point taken but I really don't see the point of having a so called "resident band" unless they are something more than the usual turns. I'll shut up now! Be Blessed.

Hey Villan, I'm glad to see your club doing well even though it's "not my scene". Do you have any members from my hometown of Cleethorpes. I recall many years ago that the Grimsby/Cleethorpes folk scene was thriving with John Connolly et al. All the best from the FB.

I don't remember any kind of rumble band! You must elucidate. Mike and I were regulars at the Dolphin in the 70's and then later on the boat/Leaking Boot etc. Now occasional vistors to the Spiders Web.

I remember the Rumble Band back in the seventies, and the plump but dynamic bespectacled out of tune vocalist. I was at that time playing with a Lincoln band called 'Horizon' (Chris Elkington, John Clarke, Ian Capaldi and me, another plump but dynamic out of tune vocalist), and wherever we played, they'd been there the week before, going down a storm and making life tough for us!

Sooz, The Rumble Band probably wouldn't have pressed your buttons, you being a confirmed folkie an' all. They were a very POWERFUL (some would say loud, but I'm more diplomatic than that!) soully-type outfit, and they had a huge following in the Lincolnshire/Yorkshire area in the seventies.

Fat B***ard, were you mayhap that plump but dynamic bespectacled out of tune vocalist?
