Subject: Tech: Busted Kyser Capos ???
From: Clinton Hammond

They have a one year warrenty, sure... but I've never had one last so little time... But eventually, that little spring dealy in the middle is gonna snap, and BAND, it's dead!

So the question is this... what, if anything has anyone come up with to do with their old busted ones? Seems like they might be good for SOMETHING more than landfill...

that should read "BANG it's dead"

Carry a spare, preferably a Shubb. The only Kyser breakdown I've had was caused by the pin breaking, not the spring.

I've got parts and I rehab them once in a while with new rubber but never a spring.

I've got a spring if you need one.

Peace, Mooh.

If you get used to Shubb capos, you will soon forget about Kyser. Trust me.

As I take two guitars to gigs, and each have their own capo, it's not very likely that BOTH Kysers are gonna fail on the same night... A Shubb would make a good back-up though, cause they're small... Buyt Kysers are my prefered capo..

Pin? The long straight piece that goes up the inside of the back of the capo? Is that what ya mean? To me, that's part of the spring... Or do you mean the hinge spring? Cause I've NEVER had one of those bust... heh

I've also never had to replace the rubber... the spring goes first...

crud... -I- can't even get the old spring 'coil' out of the old one...

Any tricks?

Thanks for the input LH, but I'm a Kyser man...

I can't see how you can move a Shubb around one handed in the middle of a set - I just haven't got the dexterity.

"Replacing the rubber" on a Kyser - that's a new one on me. How do you go about that? It could be handy, because I've found in time the rubber deteriorates and gets all spongy. Other than that, I think they'd last for ever.

I think they mean the sorta clear rubber piece at the back of the 'pinch'... not the part against the fret-board...

No Martin... it's the fact that mine are used sometimes 3, 4, or 5 nights a week...   It's simple work-hardening of the spring, and one day, snap... done... Like repeated bending of a coat-hanger.. eventually the wire loses its 'flex' and just snaps....   Even using them 3 to 5 nights a week, the DO last years... but eventually they do die...

I resent the 'abuse' implication on your part for that matter...

I have a Kyser I use on my Martin. The Kyser is getting tossed before it breaks. I'll probably keep the Martin tho' and switch back to a Shubb.

Gaffer a length of dowel to the back end of the Keyser, to make it longer (increases leverage).
Good for quick changes, as well.

Only problem I've ever had with a Kyser was the spring losing tension, but only after years of service.
I always carry a couple to a gig but never had to use the back-up.

Was that the kiss of death or what?!!!

I'm almost guaranteed to waste three capos in the next two weeks now I've said that!

Clinton:

As you know, the Kyser capo has a long rigid member with ornamental curves on it. And you come to this forum and ask people what you could possibly do with such an item...you ,with your reputation for searing frankness and adversarial suggestions. My God, man...do you honestly expect that no-one is going to tell you where to put the goddamned thing?

Well....I hate to deflower your bubble, bubba, but you could always just leave it rammed into the trash can at the coffee shop, or put it up your sleeve.

I like Kysers. I've owned 3. Bought the third one when the spring broke in my first one. I still have it. I e-mailed Kyser about a replacement spring. Here's the reply I got:

Dear Sir:
You Capo has A warranty that states if your capo fails within one year, send it back to us with $3.00.
After a year: $10.00

Kyser Musical Products
28141 State Hwy 64
Canton TX 75103

Never sent it yet. But I may. Another new one will set me back locally damn near 30 bucks Canadian.

I had one break: the spring snapped. After a quantity of trying to figure out how to send $10 to the USA fromt he UK by a method that would not cost me more then the price of a new Kyser, I approached the importers. Result: a new one, free. This was after about 5 years.

I always buy the 12 string versions - working on the theory that they must be stronger. I've never had one bust, but then again i have four or five cpos on the go in various cases and on coffee tables around the house. I used to lose a lot of capos - but not so much since I stopped drinking.

rob Armstong , the guitar maker once said to me, we should all pay into a central fund and be allowed to pick up a capo whenever we see one. At the time I was stunned by the clarity of this vision, but as i get older I realise two fund holders might see the same capo and want it at the same time.

*checks packaging*

One year warranty... as mentioned above...

Warranty Validation... Blah blah blah...

Additional Information...

"If after one year you believe your capo needs repair, we will actually replace it with a brand new capo for only $10 US. Just mail use the caop and a check and we will forward you a replacement promptly..."

So no longer does the packaging mention replacement rubbers for Kysers...   But 10 bucks will always get you a new capo...

So I guess THAT'S what I'm gonna do with my old busted one...

Mine has grooves from the strings. I get a buzz, which I strongly suspect is because of the condition of what I'll call the pressure pad.

On the other hand, so long as the grooves aren't too developed, they can reduce any tendency to put the guitar out of tune when you capo up. Especially on the bass strings - Rick Fielding recommended cutting a groove for teh bass E at least, but I've found that the Keyer seems to do that for you itself, if you leave it on the strings.

I think it's probably a good idea to leave the capo on the strings when you buy it, and then, once the grooves are settled in, start removing it from the fretboard, when you aren't using it.

I bought a couple of Kysers about 12 years ago . No trouble & still in regular use.
Did you know that the "curly bit" of decoration acts as a bridge pin remover. Thats what I was told & it seems to work on my instruments.
I suspect that the cost of a suitable spring and the problem of fitting it is not worth the hassle. Cheaper to buy a new one

Not sure what you folks are referring to. I've got Kysers I've been using steadily for 5 or 6 years and they have no grooves on them at all. The rubber sleeve on the foot of the capo wears out and rips, but that is easily fixed.

We re-did the wooden floor to the stage in the music show where I work and used black rubberized tile squares. I was making a partial capo out of a Kyser I had and used a piece of the black rubberized tile square scrap and some CA glue. Works like a charm. If you are really wanting "factory replacement" I would go with the guy that says send it back to Kyser with $10 and they wills send you a new one. Milt Kyser is a neat guy. Always trying to make a better capo.

" I would go with the guy that says send it back to Kyser with $10 and they wills send you a new one."

They don't even do that any more... You send the busted one to them, they send you a new one...

But ya gotta talk to them like they're 4 years old... I send them 3 busted ones... they sent me 2 replacements... after saying they were gonna send me 3...

I hadda email 'em back and give 'em a gentle boot to get my 3rd...

:-)

"I've been using steadily for 5 or 6 years and they have no grooves on them at all"
Probably because you don't leave them on the guitar for long periods of time...

Why would I leave them on the guitar for long periods? They stay on the strings for as long as the song takes, then I take it off and either clamp it on the headstock or at a new place on the fretboard for the next song.
