Subject: Obit: Alberta Martin From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 02 Jun 04 - 06:06 AM Hello My name is Tom Hamilton and I come from Scotland, I just read about a lady who was the widow of the last American Civil War veteran. She died aged 97. So sad and yet this lady was a part of you history America. So that's another piece of Amercan history that is disappearing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alberta Martin From: Mark Clark Date: 02 Jun 04 - 10:54 AM Yes, she was the last of the lot. Of course she was born in the 20th century. The Great War would be the first one she'd have known much about. I don't know her history but say she married at 15 (1922) and say her husband was 15 during the last days of the War Between the States, he'd have been 72 at the time of their wedding. Even if he'd been only 10 and just a wrangler or something, he'd still have been 67 at their wedding. It's hard to think of Mrs. Martin as having any relation to the history of the Civil War. I'm guessing her husband didn't remember very much about the Civil War by the time they were married. - Mark |

Subject: RE: Obit: Alberta Martin From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 02 Jun 04 - 11:26 AM she was married to William Jasper Martin in 1927, he was born in 1845 and died in 1931. so I think that he saw the Amercan civil war because when in started in 1860 he would of been 25 years old, I think that's old enough to see the American civil war don't you. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alberta Martin From: Amos Date: 02 Jun 04 - 11:33 AM 1845 to 1860 is fifteen years, not 25. But he could have been engaged as a drummer boy. A |
Subject: RE: Obit: Alberta Martin From: Mark Clark Date: 02 Jun 04 - 06:04 PM I found an article on Alberta & William which indicates William was only an active soldier for just under two months in 1864. He came down with measles then went AWOL and was listed as a deserter. He received his $50/mon. pension only because he covered up the fact of his desertion. I'm guessing William really didn't know much about the Civil War. - Mark |
