It seems to be listed as "I'm Not Downhearted But I'm Getting There" by Mose Allison. Not sure if he was performer or writer. No luck with lyrics.

I haven't found lyrics yet but there is a lot of material on the author, Mose Allison.

AMG - All Music Guide lists 4 of Mose Allison's albums that contain GETTIN' THERE:

"Allison Wonderland: Anthology" [57]
"Ever Since the World Ended" [87]
"Jazz Profile" [87]
"Mose Chronicles: Live in London, Vol. 1" [01]

I transcribed this from a couple of sound samples found at Barnes & Noble:

People ask me questions 'bout the way I've spent my life.
Thirty years in showbiz, only had one wife.
Limousines an' swimmin' pools, I didn't get my share,
But I'm not downhearted. I am not downhearted.
I'm not downhearted, but I'm gettin' there.
I'm gettin' there. I'm gettin' there.

Did you ever get the feeling you've been taken for a ride?
The big ones eat the little ones and there's no place left to hide.
Just don't drink the water. Try not to breathe the air.
But I'm not discouraged. I am not discouraged.
I'm not discouraged, but I'm gettin' there.
I'm gettin' there. I'm gettin' there.

[There is probably more to the song. Allison's voice is clear and easy to transcribe. Why not buy the album? I can't imagine it would be a disappointment.]

Thanks for the words Jim. I have already ordered the CD but the tune is in my head, and there's a 3-6 weeks shipping from the USA - I couldn't get a copy in the UK

I'm heavily into Mose at the moment. Here's a Youtube link to a live performance of "Getting There". Great stuff!

Thanks for the link, Tunesmith. There's only one verse more than the 2 I posted above. Here it is:

3. No matter how I'm feelin' I still propose a toast.
If you're almost successful, you're better off than most.
If I was sellin' fantasy, I'd be a millionaire.
But I'm not disillusioned. I am not disillusioned.
I'm not disillusioned, but I'm gettin' there.
I'm gettin' there. I'm gettin' there.
