This ditty was recorded by Cherish The Ladies (vocalist Kathy Ryan) on their first CD, available on Green Linnet CDs or CSs in Danbury, Ct, or any Irish shoppe.

If you'd like a copy of the song on cassette, please send $2 to cover tape and mailing to: Bobby O'Brien, 49 McCleary Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010-2816 USA.

THE COAL QUAY MARKET SONG
(Trad. arr. A. Russell)

When I went down to the Coal Quay Port to buy an old chemise
The first thing I picked up in me hand I found it full of fleas
How much do you want for that old thing, Eighteen pence says she
Eighteen pence for that old thing, do you think I am a fool-oh

CHORUS
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, kitty pallalla pallie-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, me whack follol le nai-do

So I took it home and I washed it out, hung it up to dry
How much did you pay for that old thing, Eighteen pence says I
Eighteen pence for that old thing, do you think I am fool
Take it out of the house you dirty old louse, or Ill wallop you with a stool-oh

CHORUS
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, kitty pallalla pallie-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, me whack follol le nai-do

So I went back to the Coal Quay Port, says Maam would you be so kind
To take back the old chemise that hangs so long behind
The woman she gave a look at me and her lips began to squeeze
And all around the Coal Quay sure, she walloped me with the chemise-oh

CHORUS
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, kitty pallalla pallie-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, me whack follol le nai-do

So come all ye pretty females, if ya want to buy new clothes
Never buy a chemise that ll hang down to your toes
Never let your man interfere with your starch and blue
And if youre gonna buy a chemise, be sure ya buy one new

CHORUS
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, kitty pallalla pallie-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, me whack follol le nai-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, kitty pallalla pallie-do
Kitty pallalla pallalla pallie, me whack follol le nai-do

It would be no harm to mention Jimmy Crowley with reference to this song. I think he was responsible for reviving and popularising the song.
