Brittain has had drink drive limits for professional skippers for some time now but there is a proposal afoot (mixed metaphors?) to include liesure sailors in the breathaliser net. Sail may be exempt if the discussion goes that way but powered boats will be fair game for PC Splosh.

Powered boats? Better off sunk, the ones that race around showing off, anyway.

Drunken boaters are just as dangerous to themselves and others as drunken drivers.

Fine them, and confiscate their boat and everything in it if they repeatedly violate the legal blood-alcohol limit. The BA limit should apply to any motorized vehicle, on land OR water.

I'm sorry - Why should sail be exempt? A drunken pilot on ANY type of watercraft is a danger to himself, others, and property. And I include canoe, kayak, sailboat, jetski, etc., etc., etc.

Dear lord...no more drunken sailors? Do you know how many centuries of tradition you're jettisoning here?? Sigh....

no - I don't want to banish drunken sailors - just keep them from operating any equiptment WHILE drunk.

A silly bugger windsurfing isn't the same kind of danger to other people as the same silly bugger in a high-powered motor-boat. Remember how Kirsty McColl was killed.

McGrath,

I'd be grateful if you'd clarify your position on speedboats.

It's certainly possible that a silly bugger in a high-powered motor-boat may well have killed Kirsty McColl. I didn't see the Coroner's report.

Many, many more deaths are caused by "silly buggers" who drive cars.

Or is your:

Powered boats? Better off sunk, the ones that race around showing off, anyway just an illiberal prejudice of yours?

I don't like the things, and I think the sea is a much better place without them. Working boats are one thing, "pleasure boats" are something else.

"an illiberal prejudice"? Not the only one I have either.

Anyone who owns a sail or motor powered vessel should not do so when drunk. They put their own lives, those of their friends on board and other boat owners at risk.

I would not think you could operate a windsurfer whilst seriously drunk, but they are fairly dangerous items. A plywood cruiser was sunk here recently by a incompetant windsurfer. This person hit the boat hard enough to puncture the hull, then shot through and left it to sink.
What shall we do with a drunken sailor? Robbery seems traditional.

AND what about those found drunk in charge of opinions on opposing football teams - not quite as many deaths because the police can catch them more easily - but worth a brickbat any day.
