A friend will be in London briefly, and would like to know of any good
shops for British Traditional Music recordings. (My knowledge ended in 1990, and most of the good shops I knew are now gone.)
Thanks! Thomas.

I don't think there are any - Dobells went years ago, so now there are just the big ones like Tower Records at Piccadilly Circus (incredibly good for old blues but not much folk) and Virgin at the Tottenham Court Rd end of Oxford street. The internet is probably a better place to look - try folktrax for starters.

cheers, Terry

Virgin is better than Tower and HMV for trad stuff - third floor. Very large section and very knowledgeable staff (well, there was when I was looking for something last year).

Good luck!

Alternatively, get yourself down to Camden Town and look at some good old fashioned vinyl! Just on about every street corner.

Hidden away inside Foyles bookshop is a section called Ray's Jazz (strangely enough). It's OK. I've sometimes seen stuff you wouldn't normally expect to find anywhere other than online to Rocking Chair, Living Tradition or Musikfolk. Adjacent cafe and friendly staff.

Honest Jon's on Portobello Road and the Exchange shop on Notting Hill Gate (section irritatingly named anglo-celtic) can be good for rarities.

Nothing like Colletts though...

There's a chain called MVC that has a reasonable folk and country selection. The one I go to is on London Bridge, very close to the Monument.

Last time I was in Hobgoblin in Rathbone Place, off Oxford Street near Virgin they had a reasonable stock but that was some time ago.
