Subject: Girvan Folk Fest 2003 Song Comp Winner
From: Scabby Douglas

Last year (2003) the Girvan Folk festival Songwriting Competition was won by a song in tribute to Hamish Henderson.

Does anyone know the name of the chap who wrote it?

He may be from the Linlithgow area (or possibly not).

I have a notion that I've heard him singing a song about "The Session From Hell" - which might have been one of his as well.

Any ideas?

And, no, the organisers of the festival don't have the info available, which is why I'm posting here... just in case.

Thanks

Steven

Steven,

As you know I was an MC at that years festival, although I didn't do the songwriting that year. What did the singer look/sound like?
Any clues?

John

John...

Sorry. Only just spotted that you had replied.
(Which doesn't bode all that well for my powers of observation...)

Yep, the chap would be maybe early 50's, greying hair, but at least he has a reasonable quantity thereof (unlike us).

Slim (also, sadly, unlike us), clean-shaven.
He's a good singer, with a clear voice, slight edge to the voice - so that you'd hear him in a busy room.

Thank God this description isn't going out on Crimewatch UK, eh? I think they'd be reporting a "poor response"

I'm fairly sure I know the chap of whom you speak and if it is him, you're correct he does stay in Linlithgow and 'The session from Hell' is also one of his (again I think, but pretty sure)
Let me know if you would like me to approach him on your behalf for any info.Don't want to just post his name without checking with him and as it happens I expect to be seeing him later today.

Guest, thanks for that...

ermmm (shuffles feet, looks embarrassed)

Actually, I'll come clean.
He won the Comp last year. I won it this year. No-one (at the Folk Festival) knows where the Cup is. He may well have handed it back, and they have just lost it. Anyone with experiece of Girvan FF will agree that this would not be impossible.

I know, I know, it's not about the winning or the losing, nor is it about whether you win a cup or not. However should I fail to produce some physical evidence of having won, fairly soon, there are a number of people who will conclude that I am in fact a Big Fat Liar. I can't argue the "Big", nor indeed, the "Fat", but I take exception to the "Liar".

If the cup is really lost, I think it is incumbent on the organizers of the Girvan Festival to get you a new one. Congratulations!

Dear Mr Scabby, the cup was handed back to the Girvan organisers at the Festival weekend and it was seen to be placed with the other cups. This has been confirmed by two sources there at the time. The previous winner has e-mailed the organisers to that effect so hopefully you will hear about your well deserved trophy in due course.

NEIL MACDONALD is his name!! His partner, Grace, handed the cup back at the 2004 festival: what they did with it after that is anyone's guess! (Neil had defected to Moscow at the time - all in the cause of Scottish Folk Music, you understand!)
Are you up fer the cup again this year, Steven? I'll be in there with something stupid but not prize-winning!
P.S. I apparently won a cup for something last year, but didn't find out till I got home, so I've never clapped eyes on it! I wonder if it exists?
TB

I think I might not be at Girvan this year. Ears bunged up. can't really sing - well, I can, but can't tell if I'm in tune or not.

Also... on-call for work this weekend.

So enjoy Girvan FF, and have fun

Steven
