How's about a bit of a hand for an old trusted friend in need of a bit of TLC. Would respond well to a bit of spit and polish to restore to its former glory. Currently en route to a new home and looking for singers and musicians to join us on the journey.

Organisers planning a relaunch when the new venue is confirmed. Forget reality TV, take part in your very own folk club and help it to grow into the kind of club the urban metropolis, that is Lincoln, deserves.

We meet again at The Regency Club, Tentercroft St Lincoln on Saturday July 3rd at 8.00 for 8.30 and pride ourselves on a warm welcome to all and sundry, especially those who may be emerging performers. Why not join us as we begin to launch the old tub out on the next stage of it's voyage :)

Blimey thats a bit lyrical for this neck of the woods! Anyroadup - Mike and I will be there ready to emerge from our chrysalis.

Click on "Membership" in the top right hand corner, fill in the details and become a fully fledged mad person. (I've made my guess as to who you are - when will all be revealed?)

Wasn't it Oscar Wilde who stated that he didn't feel all that drawn to any organisation willing to accept him as a member?

Although he had a lot to say that was really fine, I couldn't really join him on that particular point. I've succumbed to the asylum.

Anyhow, any tips about what makes a mighty fine club tick and how to encourage musicians and audience and keep them coming ?

Are you sure it was Oscar? I thought it might have been your near namesake Groucho. Anyway, welcome Gaucho, and I may indeed venture into your urban metropolis from the positively rural haven that is north-ish Notts. Would a 13-year-old have much chance of sneaking into the establishment?

Thanks for the welcome, Peter. It'd be great to see you. We have had a young lad join us from time to time with his parents, from a local village. Always keen to encourage the youngsters as they are the people who'll be carrying the tradition forward in the longer term.

You'd be really welcome.

Secret to running a successful club ? A question I have been asked in the past . I think you need a good room in a friendly pub with good beer and a music loving landlord , A reasonable number of competent REGULAR performers who DONT just want to ego trip and some one who will worry about the adience , NOT just the performers . Decent public transport is a help as is adjacent parking , and a welcome to ALL sorts of performers - UNLESS your audience ONLY want one sort of music to listen to !

Leadfingers,

Thanks a million for that, I've been thinking for a while about ways of encouraging regular audience attendance, whilst also providing the kind of experience that performers will want to return to. I wondered about niche approaches as we have a number of excellant clubs in the county that cater for all levels of exerience and ability, but from my own experience 3 years ago, I know that our organisers Matt and Chris really made me feel welcome as I took my first steps in performing and feel that this is a real strength that we could build on, whilst also keeping the right sort of balance that would keep the audience and more experienced performers engaged. What do you think ?

T.A.,

I couldn't possibly confirm or deny. It was either me or my twin (I'm the good looking, modest one)

It'd be great to see you. I really enjoyed the Riverside festival evening. Pity the weather wasn't a bit better for the day though.

Also really glad that things appear to have gone so well for the move to the Drovers call for everyone at Gainsborough club and looking forward to The Festival in October. Last time I was in the old Hall was at the singing workshop hosted by CBS last October. I had a great time that Saturday and the evening concert was superb.

We'll have a right royal welcome for you, week tommorrow. G

Take your time you lovely old man
There's no reason to hurry
As long as your able to wind up me clock
Then I have no need to worry

From a Cd of Tom Barbara and Brown

Rather apt, and a very nice song from them.

Just to let you know folks, we've found a new home and moving to a new night. With effect from Monday July 12th we'll be at The Duke Of Wellington, 37 Broadgate Lincoln and Monday fortnightly 8.00 sharp thereafter.

Next Saturday will be our last night at The Regency Club, Tentercroft St Lincoln, so why not join us to give the club a good send off to pastures new.

Hey Sooz - had a week of working 12-hour days (7am - 7pm) conferring at the Conference I was railroaded into hosting, followed by wining and dining a large group of mainly unappreciative Johnny Foreigners who wouldn't know good manners if they jumped up and smacked 'em in the mouth.

I'm in serious need of some good music to calm the Savage Beast that I've begun to turn into. Know where there'll be any this week?

Strollin' Johnny what can I say? Christy Moore is an all time hero,
I've just been watching a snippet of the great man with Donal Lunny and Declan Sinnott on the BBC coverage from Glastonbury. The rels sent over a video of the RTE recording of the Planxty gigs at Vicar St in Dublin last feb - it was really something else to see the boys back together after 30 years and in such good form.

I enjoyed what you did at the Old Hall and looking forward to seeing you whenever our paths next cross. Delighted that your new venue is going so well and that we are also on the way to pastures new.

KJ, The Duke of Wellington is on Broadgate Lincoln. Ask anyone for the Bus Station and the pub is about two minutes further up the hill.

Gaucho - As a regular - if infrequent - attender at Lincoln since Sun Cafe days, I'll also do my best to be at the Regency on the 12th. Have to check out the DoW meself after that - not sure if parking's a problem.
I'd hesitate to offer advice on running clubs with so many experienced hands aboiut..but...one of the problems i have always felt about the Lincoln club has been the insistence on single spots. This can be intimidating for newer players and inappropriate for those who don't have the material to put a spot together. i play whistle, and don't think folks would like a solo whistle spot for very long. as i prefer to accompany others, I tend to avoid clubs where there is no opportunity to join in with others. Hence my preference for sessions.
Maybe lincoln could do half and half to begin with....a bit of a session for 45 mis, then switch to formal spots? ...thus encouraging newer folks who might even end up getting acts together once they'd played a bit with others in a a session format? Just a thought!

BTW Strolling Johnny (et al), if you're still looking for good music this week you are always welcome at the Six Bells session in Barton of a Tuesday night!

Dáithí

Daithi,

Splendid to hear of your return. As you know, I always agree with you but at the risk of appearing a pedant, I'd like to clarify the location of the 6 Bells in case Mr Strollin' Johnny wants to amble along (and be made bloody welcome I tell you). It is in Barrow upon Humber, about three miles to the east of Barton. The Six Bells pub is just off the market place. It has a sign with 6 Bells on it and a load of folk music spilling onto the pavement through the open windows.

Hi M8. I have to say it is a bit difficult as you say becuase you play the whistle, but I have to say that when you played at Market Rasen with Bloke, it went down very well, and you are both very welcome if ever you want to do something like that again.
Cheers

What a good suggestion Daithi - half and half would enable us more tentative musicians to have a go in a session. I wouldn't dream of turning up at a regular session and inflicting my melodeon playing on the assembled multitude of experienced musicians!

Thanks Sooz, Mr Sooz and Travelling audience for the support last night. Great to see you. Here's hoping we're able to spread our wings a bit at the Duke of Wellington and that the change of night will pay dividends.

Our first night at The Duke of Wellington is Monday July 12th 8.00 sharp. Real Ale is on Tap. Our no smoking policy stays put and all musicians and people who prefer to listen will be very welcome.

I know Matt is keen to book Jack Hudson so watch this space strollin'

I'm really pleased that the recent move has gone well for Gainsborough club and am really looking forward to the festival in October. It was great last year. Also pleased that things are going so well for Villan at Market Rasen. It's good that there is so much going on in the area and in otherparts of Lincolnshire. I had a really good night at Louth Club the other week. They were really in good voice !

Thanks
