Well my idea(might be a bit radical) would be something along the lines of specifying a weekend, gathering in licensed premises and playing and singing. And to ensure everyone has a cracking time, hiring the Boat Band as guests.

Yes, Sally, a brill idea - count me in! The key things for me would be:-
1 To avoid potential bankruptcy by booking no acts unless you think a ceili and/or a concert might be financially viable with locals paying too!
2 To be based at a pub or two (or preferably breweries given you have two to choose from!) where you can have at least two seperate sessions (for song and music) which do not interfering with each other.
3 To have some close-by indoor camping and hard-standing space for campers and caravans, for which you could charge a small fee, preferably with hot showers and preferably with understanding (or deaf!) neighbours if there is any late night revelry.
4 To have somewhere close-by which will do breakfasts and, if poss, late night food.
5 To avoid December (too many parties and mummers commitments) or a clash of dates with Banbury FF (Oct), Bedworth FF (Nov), Whittlesey Strawbear Fesival (Jan), Cheltenham FF (Feb) and Sidmouth Anchor Middle Bar Singers Reunion (Feb) (any others?).
6 To let it all happen, perhaps with some nominated people gently facilitating the SARs and music sessions.
In other words, more or less as you did it in June but with indoor rather than outdoor camping! More strength to your arm!
" ... for I am free to go abroad!"
Alan

(any others?). You mean like Travelling Song & Ale, Cookley 4-6 March, or Ruardean (mid Dec)

You'd better move quick, Sal. The best dates are going fast. But I'd bust a gut to get to BC.

Sounds good to me. How about something along the lines of "Dog Days" run by Admiral and Mrs Admiral? They were always fun and raised a lot of money for charity.

Phew, You guys really are wonderful! Well what can I say? Let's go for it. Schantieman will think I'm crazey because he helped me find my marbles the week before our June FW. Come on Schantie, we can do it again can't we? Alan you are so right about not booking any bands. No offence to those who would like to come but it complicates things so much! The PRS are SO nosey. and then demand I line their pockets! We'll have a ceilidh of course, on the Saturday night. Need something to keep us warm! So who's willing to form a Cat Scratch Band? OOOh I'm excited already. Am I mad? I sure am!

It's ok, I can do this, it's easy. No booked bands, just a few arrangements with two pubs, the public hall for camping and the local school and leisure centre for hard standing and showers. No probs. Now what about the Cat Scratch Band?

You worry too much!

No date yet, but it looks as tho' it's gonna be after Christmas as we have too many things going on here before. The locals feel that January and February are quiet and we need something to cheer us all up. If I book the Public Hall for indoor camping, can I have some volunteers to man the kitchen from time to time for hot drinks etc? or do you think you can all be trusted to do your own thing in there like a hostel?

Bishop's Castle is in Shropshire, half way up the welsh border, turn left off the A49 at Craven Arms.

I'm off to Warwick this coming weekend, followed by a week at sidmouth then the following weekend at Dartmoor. I shall then put some energy into this winter bash.

Im still interested in winter festival. Be nice to do something in January. Might have some turkey left over to bring!!!! :))

Dave Hunt & coalbrookdale session lot (now at Black Swan) do something musiky after christmas at a YH on Wenlock Edge.

Hi Noreen... we have cut down the Forester sing & music to once a fortnight. Ann & Dave know which Tuesdays. It wasnt tonight if that helps.

If the Boat floods we will be at Foresters Thursday for the Irish music. Lot of water at Atcham and Buildwas stretch of the Severn today when I drove over to Shrewsbury.

How are you getting on, Sally?
As el punkiod nouveauu says, "[there is] nothing in our festival calendar for that month... " Well, I hope you won't pick a date which clashes with:-
* Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival, which is on 7/8/9 Jan.
* The all-day singaround at The Ram at Firle in Sussex on Sat 15 Jan.
* Helmsley Song & Ale on 28/29/30 Jan (but that is in North Yorkshire, so possibly there won't be a huge overlap?)
* Mudcat's very own Loughstock III at Portaferry in Northern Ireland on 4/5/6 Feb - it even has its own website.
* Cheltenham Folk Festival, which is on 11/12/13 Feb.
* The Middle Bar Singers Reunion at Sidmouth on 18/19/20 Feb.
Maybe the winter is a bit busier than at first sight! But I still think there is plenty or room for a Bishop's Castle Folk Day/Weekend!
Good luck!
"For I am free ...!"
Alan

The new landlord/lady of the Three Tuns is asking her 'locals' what they think and will get back to me. If we can't have the bar for a sesh then we can definitely have the function room and they'll put a bar in there. That would be ok for a tunes sesh but I need to find a place for the singing. Hardstanding shouldn't be a prob for the camper vans near the public loos, but I have to persuade the public hall key holder that it's safe to have 'campers' in the hall over night. They've not experienced anything like that before. We are in the back of beyond you know!
Don't go away now.

Right... The 3 Tuns Inn (famous pub with it's own brewery) says we can use both the bar (for music session) and their function room (with bar also)for a singaround and indoor camping! Would that work? I suppose if we cram all the 'bedding' to one end during the day we can let rip with the songsters. I'm hoping we can get food there. They're heavily into all types of music, this new land lord and lady.

So now for dates. AlanWW?,
you had a few. Anyone want to comment upon these and then choose one for us? asap please cos we have to get moving on this.

* The Middle Bar Singers Reunion at Sidmouth on 18/19/20 Feb.

Sounds good. Was at the session Jon ran at the 3 tuns last year... didnt make this years festival.

Also been there to watch local Morris side some years ago when my friends daughters were in the ladies side.

Will be nice to have something to look forward to after Christmas.

My only memory of the Straw Bear Festival was that it was bl**dy freezing! That may be because it is in the Fens though, rather than the time of year. As an ex-resident of Doddington in the Fens, and a regular diver at an inland site near Whittlesea, I found it a cold and windy place even in August.

Sal,

You may be better off with a January date - they are all a long way away and will probably only attract a tiny minority of possibles (Helmsley is invite only anyway), whereas the February ones are more likely to tempt your punters away - I shall be at Sidmouth and Cheltenham, and know several will be at Portaferry.

Hi Sally
Personally, I shall be at Whittlesey (and I know Derek & Mary intend to go and Richard Atkins & My Guru have been before but they can talk for themselves about whether they will go this year), I won't be going to The Ram at Firle, I did not get my name down quickly enough for Helmsley (so I am on the reserve list, but anyway its a long way!), I'm not yet sure about Loughstock III (accommodation is an issue, as cost is!), I will be at the Cheltenham FF singaround organised by D & M, which RA & MG usually attend, and I will be at the Middle Bar Reunion. What about the last weekend in Feb?

The music w'end which is at Wilderhope..(residential and invite only , sorry!) is on the 21-23 Jan next year.
I also need to speak to someone...Ms.Lemon ...are you there!...about the possibility of organising the annual English Country Music Weekend (for Country music read Traditional!) and we thought that it was about time it came back to Shropshire....we organised one in the very early days in Broseley ....the last few years have seen us at Postlip, Glos. at Higher Bradfield ,north of Sheffield, in Stowmarket, Suffolk and at Chagford on Dartmoor. Usually the third or last w'end in June...is there anything else planned in B.Castle on those w'ends???
Sunshine and smiles
Dave

Hi Dr Sunshine, how was your month sur le continent?

Dunno if Ill make the session at the Black Swan tomorrow night, but will try.

Had a great evening at the Unicorn in Ludlow last night. Mix of music & song, good company and much laughter. Plus I didnt have to drive home, which makes a change.

Put all the dates in a hat, Mrs Lemon, and pull one out! There will always be folk who cant make a date whichever one you pick. Then we can put it in our diaries and work round getting there.

hugs
fliss

Hi Dave Sunshine
There are several events towards the end of June but I will be at:
* Fri 17 - Sun 19 June Alcester FF (Warwickshire)
* Fri 24 - Sun 26 June Chorley FF (Lancashire)
I am sure there are many others festivals at the same time too. Its certainly a popular time of the year!

hi Snuffy, Kington is going to be the 1st weekend of July this year. Not sure who's on yet, Keiran Halpen, Bannister and Barlow, Sally and the Shot Dogs, Small Blue Fish. Local stuff really, apart from KH and B and B. A brill guy called Ian Day from S. Wales. Non of it's really 'folk' tho.

Still can't make my mind up about a date for the winter BCFW. Steve doesn't want it in half term cos he's going sailing, can't clash with Chelters. Can't clash with the Middle Bar reunion. I think it'll have to be some time in march. When's Easter, can't clash with Miskin. And so it goes on....and on....and on...

Sal

I's no good, I can't do it. Everyone has somewhere else to go and the pub has it's own events at other times, so we'll stick to June.

Just organise it, Sal, for any month that YOU choose. You will never please everybody. Anyone that can/want to attend will!

I certainly hope to be there so save me a good camper spot.
