I had a chance to watch John Ford's "The Quiet Man" the other night, and can't get the backgroud music out of my head. There's a bit of "The Kerry Dances" sprinkled around the place, but its the prevailing tune that's driving me crazy. A delightful tune that I think I know, but I'm danged if I can put a name on it. Does any body have any ideas. I will proudly drink a pint and toast whomever might be able to help.

The two tunes that I most recall are, The Rakes of Mallow, and The Wild Colonial Boy. There's another name for the first tune that I learned long ago in school, but I have forgotten what it is.

The Isle Of Innisfree by Richard Farrelly?

Right. There is quite a thread in this forum on this topic, and "Isle Of Innisfree" was the concensus as the theme.

If it is the one that is played often on the squeeze box my guess is it's The Rake's of Mallow he's looking for. If he's looking for the one that is sung Thats of course, The Isle of Innisfree.

I'd hold with The Rakes.

The Rakes of Mallow is the tune used as the background for the long fight - over the hills, etc. It shows up as "incidental" music in a couple of other places, with fragments used almost as sound effects.

I don't have good enough "recognition" to place the other couple of tunes that are used. There was a rather extended discussion of music in this film in another thread, possibly a year ago; but my recollection is that the thread name had no direct connection so it may a be little hard to dig up. Maybe someone with a better memory...?

Not the thread I was thinking of, but Quiet Man may give some pretty good stuff on the other tunes used.

Info for "paddymac"

Hi Paddy,

Hopefully this will be of help although I see your post is a long time ago now!

The film scenes - Main Title, This Way/Journey to Innisfree & Humble Cottage, Sean sees Mary Kate for the first time (sheep grazing), River Cottage, The Love Scene/The Graveyard and Cottage Fireside/Forlorn - all include in full or in part the film's main theme which is the melody of a song written by Irish man Dick Farrelly, it's called "The Isle of Innisfree".

The following Wikipedia article should be of interest:-
