We've got the programmes at our house - all 1000 of them, though we've sold quite a lot already. You can always pop round to buy one if you're in the area - it would be good to see you! The wine's on tap!!

No need for a resend of schedule - a large scale scouring of the music room/office at home unearthed the one you sent earlier - and a kind 'catter' emailed me a copy they'd been sent - my cup runneth over!
As for the weather - what difference will it make once you've downed that bottle's contents? I'll bring a spare as a back-up eh?

How'd ya like the 'Woodshed Boys' CD by the way?
(And have you heard it playing in the background on 'Emmerdale'?!!!Naw! Don't suppose y'have - I don't watch it either - but a fan of ours from Wigan phoned us up all excited about it)

By the by, you can also do the 'official photographer' bit for the band if you've the inclination - your work had been first class afore! (Other folk might want to engage your talents on that score!)
We've a 30min spot in the main hall on the Sat evening (first on?) - which will be some achievement! (getting a six-piece folk-rock band on and off in time!)

There'll be a good concert on the Sat aft I reckon - upstairs in a big room of a pub on the main drag. A few artists on (in line) one song at a time each, each song to 'link' to the one just heard.
Did that there last year - a scream! Copper Kettle to host, I think - but with Stanley Accrington in the line up (he was there with me last year) things will be roarin' good fun I'm sure! Think I'll bring a 'prize' and get the audience to decide who's link was the best/most tenuous - congrats in advance Stan! - Hugs - Duncan (who really should be knuckling down to work here!)

Hopefully myself and Chris Harvey will see one or two of you at the tribute to Harry Boardman concert that we're doing at the Methodist church hall - "A Mon Like Harry". Loads of the songs and recitations that Harry used to do with a bit of chat about the old days. How did you get your fire going when there wasn't any draught??? What's the connection between "Bowton's Yard" and "Coronation Street"? (It isn't what you think!)Who was "Peabody" who had a never ending supply of money?, Why is 466 Oldham Road, Failsworth a significant address?

Yes, we'll really miss Bill at Saddleworth this year. The profits will definitely be down in the Tory Club - the one in Saddleworth was the only one he would drink in (he always said he was doing missionary work there!!)

How did you get your [coal fire] going when there wasn't any draught brought back memories of living in a terrace property in Brinckman St. Barnsley in the early fifties.
Coal fires were started with sticks, my job as a lad was to chop 'em in the cellar with an axe

Old Newspapers were laid on the fire grate (once the old cinders had been removed to the bin)then sticks, then small coals.

However getting the thing to go properly was a bit of a devil and ingenius yet unsafe practices included putting the shovel infront of the fire and then covering the rest of the fireplace front with newspaper to create a vacuum ~ this created a draught to get the fire going, provided you didn't get the front newspaper on fire first!!

I'm not that old ~ just that we had some primitive conditions, fortunately the toilets weren't the old duckets
The tin bath was also in the cellar, for the weekly bath, rest of the week I stood in the kitchen sink!

EEh times were 'ard then Ali!!
We then moved to the local council estate, I was 14 and at the grammar school

ps next door neighbour was a tall bloke and couldn't get into the toilet very well going forwards, so he cut a piece of wood out so that the door could be pushed and circumnavigated the toilet pot, if you know what I mean. It looked a bit weird from the outside

Ray I'm not that old and I still remember having to light the fire and using a newspaper over the shovel - still did that when I moved into my first flat in 1984 too - my flat mate would then pile the fire up high and leave me to swelter whilst he went to the pub - getting back at closing time the fire would then be just at the right level and you could party til the small hours then put the ashes on to keep the fire in til the morning if you were lucky so you didnt have the problem of getting it started!

I remember toast infront of the fire too - the only thing my mother could cook that wasnt a burnt offering!!

Aye, brings back childhood memories in Newton Heath, shovel in front of fire and panickin when the paper caught fire!, havin to rake the ashes out in the mornin; watchin dad spit in the fire and waiting for the sizzle (urgh); arguin as to who's turn it was to 'put coal on'; then when poorly you could have a fire in yer bedroom....and yes i stood up in sink (slopstone) as we had no bathroom (or hot water on tap) - dad went to the public baths at the end of the street next to the wash house where me mam went every week; and the outside bog...well that was somethin else 'specially in winter - goin through the yard with a candle on a piece of wood - then it would freeze and you could'nt pull the chain.

Eeeee when i were a lad, the times they were bad
But not quite as bad as when me dad were a lad......etc

Yea Vin, outside toilets, WC cistern would ice over and it wouldn't flush, had to break the ice ~ slopping out the guzunder or tripping across t'yard to t'toilet to do number twos in the dark with a lump of Daily Mirror, in case the strips on the 6 inch nail had all been used up

O'course printed newspaper were a bit iffy as the print came off on your hands and - well!

I have some old photos of conditions prior to 1936 - which of course were even worse, I'm doing trad song at Saddleworth and have some pictures of linen weavers cottage in Barnsley, might be of interest to those singing weaving/industrial song

Tanglefoot, by virtue of being Canadian come from the North American Continent ........... but they welcome everybody, it truly is the friendly festival. Although not a big festival the artist line up rivals that of any of the larger festivals and does so each year, in fact the festival somehow manages to get better and better each year. Considering that the first one seven years ago was superb, that takes some doing. The small committee do a fantastic job and work their socks off in order that the festival is a success and even over the weekend of the festival they work unstintingly and are approachable at all times over any matter however seemingly trifling. Uppermill where most of the festival is based is small enough to be intimate and large enough to provide a variety of venues to cater for a variety of tastes, it is beautifully located nestling in the Pennine Hills abd is quite well place dfor access, the M62 being just a few miles away.

Got back from a great festival. Well done!! Lost my mobile phone but it apparently took a trip to Oldham and will be coming home in the next post - see there are still some honest folk about! This morning Sunday sing was outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed the song in a hat workshop with Theresa. Can we come again next year please :0))?

I second that Raggy, only hard work and amazing organisation can result in such a superb festival, it really does continue to get better and better and is amazingly good value for money.

The atmosphere in Uppermill is second to none and even the rain failed to put a damper on proceedings.

Thanks to everyone who came to my workshops and a special thankyou to the Librarian and staff at Uppermill Library who made computers available so I could give a practical demonstration of things people didn't understand.

Hi Raggy thanks for the cheese and wine evening on Friday night - very pleasant evening despite all the electrical problems

Alio I have some photos of the children's musicians workshop both that and singing/signing went well.

I enjoyed doing it all again at Stainsby Festival on Sunday but really missed the Saddleworth singing and the survivors sessions.

My kids thought the children's workshop was brilliant. Maddie now wants to play mandolin as well and the littlies are having mini melodeons for their birthday - yes one each so help us!!!! Anyone who takes my kids away for a couple of hours and keeps them so well occupied deserves a pint next time I see her :0)

A special thanks also to Steve, Clive & others for their added impetus in helping get the 3-ton 'Party Bus' out of the mud this morning.

I managed to get home, changed and into my 10.00 am meeting with 3 minutes to spare. That's what the Japanese call 'Just In Time' technology!!!

Let me add my thanks Ali, it was our first time at Saddleworth but definitely not the last. A truly great little festival (but its growing).

Glad you made the meeting Bob, the PartyBus moved easily with four of us on the back, and you even managed to avoid covering us in mud, but they'll need a few barrer-fulls to fill up the holes you left behind. Its fun camping on the bottom of a lake isn't it? Well Ok it might not be fun but it's certainly different.

Thank you so much, all of you - I'm quite overwhelmed with all the praise we received. We actually did enjoy it ourselves this year! Even the 1 hour power cut on the Friday had everyone pulling together. (Reminiscent of the blitz I believe - not that I would remember!!)

I didn't see a great deal, but my "highs" were the Meet The Artist with Martin W-R (which I gave to myself to MC!!), the amazing Sunday Sing, and the emotive singing at the Survivors Session (which had me crying my eyes out).Oh, and all the kind people who praised my Sounds of Folk programme, plus the numberous Jamieson's.

Yes Jane, the Shellbacks are coming back - they're friends, so I couldn't do it without you!!

We're having a committee meeting at the Waggon tonight, and a review meeting after; we actually do go through all the evaluations and comments every year, and make changes as necessary!

Ken Hall proposed the toast to Saddleworth 2005 at the Survivors session - his speech set me off again!!

See you all soon - probably Whitby is the next.

Another grand festival. (What rain?). Thanks to ali and all the committee.

List of highlights would be too long but its great that up-coming young (and very talented) artistes were once again featured.

I think Stan Ackrington must have a poem for all occasions - his post power cut tome was amazing!

Nice to meet you nutty!

Criticism? Can we have the heat down a bit in the civic next year - phew!

Highlight for me was the resounding cheer as the Duncan McFarlane Band re-entered the cafe after their 'walkabout'
while playing their last instrumental round, out and back in .
That then followed by their encore, where they hauled a young tamborine weilding lad up from a
morris-dancing-garbed family to play along with them - and his final leap to the last chord (rock style!) with Duncan. Fab!

Sounds like a really good one! Evart was really wonderful as well. A beautifully run thing. It started as a dulcimer festival, but they share quite well with all sorts of acoustic music.This was the 32nd year. It is an (almost) totally free thing. $3 to get in for the full 3 1/2 days. Access to all the wonderful workshops. It does cost $10 a nite to camp. We played the Friday nite concert (with other acts) it lasted 3 1/2- 4 hours with intermittant rain and lightning and thunder, and very few people left. Most sat on hard stadium benches and the others on the ground on folding chairs with umbrellas.We also played a more spontaneous thing sunday morning.Sold out all our CD's. They were the best audience I have ever palyed in front of! Hung on every word, got every "joke". A total high!

We are already invited back. Does your festival always take place on the same weekend?

I only popped over from Bradford to drop off some Julie leaflets, have a beer and a wee sing but the Sat night line up looked great so I stayed. A great night - a little puzzled as to why so many people left before Last Night's Fun - they missed the usual fantastic performance.

I thought Cara were also excellent and Pete Coe was another I had previously only read about but will be seeing again.

Dunc McF and Last Night's Fun in one night - grinned all the way home!

I have to confess i left the civic before the end of Last Night Fun's set (sorry to them for that - bit ignorant of me). I'm sure i missed some good stuff. The reason was that i wanted to make sure i got into the late night session at the con club (as i suspect was the reason for some other early departures). This session has got so popular over the years that the club gets packed out quite quickly.

I beleive that it may be re-organised in some way next year. Perhaps there should be a 2nd session running simultaneously at another venue?

(Have to say the singing in the camp-site food tent was a bit damp this year, bit like the weather).

Yes, next year's festival is July 15th - 17th. I'm hoping to get John Tams and Barrie Coope for that, if possible.

I was really sorry about people leaving the hall whilst Last Night's Fun were on - I think they're brill, and lovely with it! We're going to have a rethink about the Late Night Eztra before next year. It IS popular, as you say Vin, but something will have to be changed. I might move it to the Masonic Lodge, which holds more people.

As for Duncan, he must have lost pounds whilst he was on stage on Saturday night - the energy!!!! Brill!!

Off to Spain now, to recover, and dry out!! (Not from the Jamieson's, I hasten to add!!)
