THE FIELD BEHIND THE PLOW
(Stan Rogers)
As recorded by Stan Rogers on "Northwest Passage" (1981)

Watch the field behind the plow
Turn to straight, dark rows.
Feel the trickle in your clothes.
Blow the dust cake from your nose.
Hear the tractor's steady roar.
Oh, you can't stop now.
There's a quarter section more or less to go.

And it figures that the rain
Keeps its own sweet time.
You can watch it come for miles,
But you guess you've got a while,
So ease the throttle out a hair.
Every rod's a gain,
And there's victory in every quarter mile.

Poor old Kuzyk down the road,
The heartache, hail, and hoppers brought him down.
He gave it up and went to town;
And Emmett Pierce the other day
Took a heart attack and died at forty-two.
You could see it coming on,
'Cause he worked as hard as you.

In an hour, maybe more,
You'll be wet clear through.
The air is cooler now.
Pull your hat-brim further down
And watch the field behind the plow
Turn to straight, dark rows.
Put another season's promise in the ground.

And if the harvest's any good,
The money just might cover all the loans.
You've mortgaged all you own.
Buy the kids a winter coat,
Take the wife back east for Christmas if you can.
All summer she hangs on
When you're so tied to the land.

For the good times come and go,
But at least there's rain;
So this won't be barren ground
When September rolls around;
So watch the field behind the plow
Turn to straight, dark rows.
Put another season's promise in the ground.

Watch the field behind the plow
Turn to straight, dark rows.
Put another season's promise in the ground.

THE FIELD BEHIND THE PLOUGH

Watch the field behind the plough turned
A straight dark rose fell the trickle in your clothes
Blow the dusk cake from your nose
And hear the tractors steady roar
Ah ye can't stop now there's a quarter section more or less to go
And it figures that the rain takes it's own sweet time
You can watch it for miles but I guess you've got a while so
ease the throttle out a hair every rogs a gain
And there's victory in every quarter mile
For old choosey down the road
The hearach, plae and hoppers got him down.
Give up and move to town
Emmet Pierce, the other day took a heart attack and died at 42
You could see it coming on cause he worked as hard as you
In an hour maybe more you'll be wet clean through.
The air is cooler now, pull your hat brim further down.

Chorus
Watch the field behind the plough turned a straight dark rose
But another season's promise in the ground

And if the harvest is any good
The money might just cover all the loans if mortgage all you own
Buy the kids a winter coat, take the wife back east for Christmas if you can
All summer she still down, when you're so tied to the land
Well the good times come and go
But at least there's rain and this won't be barren ground
When September rolls around

Hi, Ezio - I hope you don't mind if I submit a few corrections. This one isn't at the Stan Rogers Web site or in the database, but I neglected to do a forum search. It's by the late Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers, who died in the early 1980's.

THE FIELD BEHIND THE PLOW
by Stan Rogers
©1981, Fogarty's Cove Music

Watch the field behind the plow turn to straight dark rows
Feel the trickle in your clothes, blow the dust cake from your nose
Hear the tractor's steady roar, oh you can't stop now
There's a quarter section more or less to go

And it figures that the rain keeps its own sweet time
You can watch it come for miles, but you guess you've got a while
So ease the throttle out a hair, every rod's a gain
And there's victory in every quarter mile

(bridge #1)
Poor old Kuzyk down the road
The heart-ache, hail and hoppers brought him down.
He gave it up and went to town
And Emmett Pierce, the other day
Took a heart attack and died at 42
You could see it coming on 'cause he worked as hard as you
In an hour, maybe more, you'll be wet clear through.
The air is cooler now, pull your hat-brim further down.
And watch the field behind the plow turn to straight dark rows
Put another season's promise in the ground
(bridge #2)
And if the harvest's any good
The money might just cover all the loans
You've mortgaged all you own
Buy the kids a winter coat,
Take the wife back east for Christmas if you can
All summer she hangs on, when you're so tied to the land.
For the good times come and go, but at least there's rain
So this won't be barren ground when September rolls around
So watch the field behind the plow turn to straight dark rows
And put another season's promise in the ground

Well, NOW I looked. Yeah, the song was already posted in the Forum, by some guy named Joe Offer, in February, 1997. Well, this time, it's formatted.

"Two" straight dark rows.

The song, as you can judge by the references contained in it, is about wheat farming on the Canadian praries.

And while we are on the subject of Stan Rogers song corrections, or in this case an old song he covered, Scarborough Settler's Lament in the database has several errors. "Banished Swill"?

It is reassuring to know that even Joe forgets to check the DT sometimes. Even more reassuring to know it was his own post that he missed. Perhaps this is another glitch in Max's Offer program.

Love to all.

Hi, Marion - this MIDI was transcribed by Blessings Barbara. The songbook transcriptions of Stan Rogers songs never sound quite the way Stan sang 'em, but this should give you the idea.
I combined the threads on this song in an attempt to reduce confusion.
