Subject: RE: The best Elvis Presley melody ? From: iamjohnne Date: 18 Jul 04 - 12:30 AM I think "Memories" was actually his. I like "Are you Lonesome tonight" best though. Johnne |

Subject: RE: The best Elvis Presley melody ? From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 18 Jul 04 - 11:37 AM I was (figuratively) blown away when I heard of his rendition of Red Sails in the Sunset. Not typical of the songs we associate with him, of course, but it displays his fine voice, with a very nice stylistic judgment. That reminds me of Mama Cass's version of Dream a Little Dream of Me. Absolutely the best version I ever heard, with such good humor and tenderness! Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: The best Elvis Presley melody ? From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Jul 04 - 01:23 PM Interesting that Amos picked two melodies that are actually old folk songs . I would add Wooden Heart , which is ALSO an old Folk Song . |

Subject: RE: The best Elvis Presley melody ? From: Mark Clark Date: 18 Jul 04 - 07:30 PM I was a big fan of the real Elvis Presley, before the Army thing and films. I love his rendition of songs both old and new but I never think of them as Elvis Presley melodies. The fact that Elvis loved and recorded many old songs doesn't, in my view, make them his. He loved bluegrass music and recorded Bill Monroe tunes. Old Shep is a Red Foley tune, Paralyzed is an Otis Blackwell tune. The list goes on and on. Heartbreak Hotel, Long Tall Sally,… none of these can properly be called “an Elvis Presley melody.” One of the things Mudcat has generally maintained is accuracy of attribution. We can appreciate great interpretations of songs but we don't lose track of song's true origins. - Mark |
Subject: RE: The best Elvis Presley melody ? From: Jeremiah McCaw Date: 19 Jul 04 - 04:39 PM I generally prefer early Elvis to "Vegas-Elvis". Love a lot of the songs he did, but most days my favourite is "Cold Kentucky Rain" -or is it just "Kentucky Rain"? (either way, written by the late Eddie Rabbitt). |
