Hi all, I'm trying to locate a song called (possibly) "Leaving Dublin" or maybe "She Knew Me Well." I heard it recently at a Celtic festival, so I don't know who might have written or originally performed it. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Diane, I'm sorry, but I haven't been able to locate this one.

I wonder if you might recall some of the words you heard.

Is it the one that begins:Farewell until we meet again down by your Liffy waters / I will bid farewel to Dublin and its streets of cobblestone?
I don't know if it's the song you're after - there's no mention of She Knew me Well in it.

It was performed by a San Francisco band by the name of Tinker's Dam. According to the singer it was called "Leaving Dublin." It didn't occur to me that it might be original, but maybe it was. The phrase "she knew me well" was a sort of refrain, I think. I got the impression it was a nostalgic look back at Dublin and a former lover. Or maybe I had more to drink than I thought. ;-D

The band doesn't seem to have a website.

Diane

Hi there:
Tinker's Damn is a group in the San Franciso area. The song you're referring to is indeed called "Leaving Dublin" and is on a track called "Nobody Showed/Leaving Dublin".

You can listen to a clip of the song and find out more about this group at:

I transcribed this from the sound sample that George Seto found:

My last night in Dublin town, and she came to see me off,
And we walked the rainy Dublin streets till the morning came up soft.
My ticket's in my pocket and my bag's at the hotel,
But I never asked if I might stay because I knew her well.

We strolled the silver Liffey where the boats go drifting by....

Excellent work, Jim.

Turns out I sort of know one of the fellows in the band. Will ask him if he can supply the words to this song.

Well, I asked him for the words, and got the songwriter to send them to me. Joe Cadora said it was OK to post, so, here we are:

Leaving Dublin
words and lyrics by Joe Cadora

My last night in Dublin town, and she came to see me off
And we walked the rainy Dublin streets 'til the morning came up soft
My tickets in my pockets, and my bags at the hotel
But she never asked if I might stay, because she knew me well

We strolled the silver Liffey, where the boats go drifting by
There were lovers in the shadows, and there were street lights in her eyes
And the golden leaves of linden trees came raining down in swells
But I never asked if I might stay, because I knew her well

We talked of friends and old times sake, of day all past and gone
Of sessions at McGarrity's, where the music broke the dawn
But of one sweet night we never spoke, on that we wouldn't dwell
Though her smile showed she remembered, and how she knew me well

And sometimes at the edge of night, when the fog comes rolling in
I think of all the bygone day, all the places I have been
Of all the ones who've graced my life, of all that I could tell
Mostly I'll remember her, because she knew me well
