Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: open mike Date: 27 Jul 04 - 04:07 PM it looksd like this festival happened july 15-18. i do not see any mention of this theft on their web page: http://www.greyfoxbluegrass.com/ i hope all these instruments are found and returned in good condition. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Amos Date: 27 Jul 04 - 04:45 PM I've let my local luthier know, although it is unlikely they would come this far West.... A |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Mooh Date: 27 Jul 04 - 06:42 PM No description of the violins and mandolins? Mooh. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: C-flat Date: 27 Jul 04 - 06:57 PM Wow that's some haul! I hope the bastards know what they've got. More-over I hope the bastards get what they deserve! C-flat. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Leadfingers Date: 27 Jul 04 - 08:02 PM Whoever nicked 'em , I will give a tenner for the 1929 Martin , just to play it once and then return it to the rightful owner ! |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Maryrrf Date: 27 Jul 04 - 08:15 PM I sure feel their pain. Makes my CD loss seem paltry by comparison. I hope they get their instruments back. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Jul 04 - 09:14 PM How in the hell could one guy grab SO many instruments???? |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: kendall Date: 27 Jul 04 - 09:48 PM A warning to all, RECORD YOUR SERIAL NUMBERS. Without them you will never get them back |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: kendall Date: 27 Jul 04 - 10:14 PM I just printed this list and will get it to Buckdancers Choice music store. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Cap't Bob Date: 27 Jul 04 - 10:52 PM Be SURE to heed Kendall's warning. I had my instruments stolen one time and the police managed to catch the culprit. I provided a list of my instruments (without serial numbers) and when I appeared in court to identify they I was asked "wouldn't it be possible for someone else to have the same group of instruments." Luckly there were a few marks that I told them about and where they were located on the instruments. Otherwise the bugger may have gotten away everything. It can be quite difficult to prove that you are the rightful owner without the serial numbers. Cap't Bob |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: GUEST,Jon Date: 27 Jul 04 - 11:29 PM Seems weird to me. open mike says there is no mention on their web site and as Clinton has said, this lot would take some shifting. Have you any more info Vixen? |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Clinton Hammond Date: 27 Jul 04 - 11:40 PM Ya... something smells fishy here... |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Vixen Date: 28 Jul 04 - 08:25 AM Well, I got the email from someone who was there, and when I sent it to my musical friends, another friend of mine who was there confirmed that it had happened... I wasn't there, and don't have any more info than what I posted. Seems to me that you might get more info by calling the number for Grey Fox, or for the Whitestown Police, which is included in the initial post. I probably should have done that before I posted here, but I trust my sources. If it's a fraud, I apologize profusely! I sure don't intend to waste Max's bandwidth on a hoax. V |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Jul 04 - 08:39 AM I won't be calling those numbers Vixen, I'm in the UK! It just seemed odd to me as did the lack of idendification of the mandolins and fiddles. In some ways, I hope this one does turn out to be a hoax - not to have a go at you who I know would not deliberately put a hoax message out, but in the hope that such a loss has not occured. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Big Mick Date: 28 Jul 04 - 10:09 AM I just tried calling all three numbers. In each case I got a recording that said nothing about the theft. I will continue to call back until I can either verify or disprove the report. I will then post here. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Mooh Date: 28 Jul 04 - 10:37 AM I've provided my insurance company with photos and descriptions including serial numbers. I have the same evidence, also backed up on photo cds. The only downside is having to update the information as instruments come and go, but it's worth the grief. I would hope that I'm not an easy target for thievery, as known as I seem to be locally. Double door locks, dog, lights, insurance, usually someone home, etc...The real risk is at a gig and and never let my gear outa sight. If this ain't a hoax, I hope the bastards are caught. Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Barbara Shaw Date: 28 Jul 04 - 10:45 AM This is not a hoax. Lisa Husted works for the Grey Fox Festival, but I don't think it happened there. (I was there and heard nothing about it until the note came out on the Grey Fox Yahoo Discussion board: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/greyfoxbluegrass/). Lisa's part of the "Grey Fox Family" so everyone associated with it is passing the word, but it was not a Grey Fox event per se. I've heard that three of the instruments have been recovered, which is also odd. I'll pass along more information when I hear it, but it is not a hoax, as far as I know. In any case, record your serial numbers! |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Jeri Date: 28 Jul 04 - 10:56 AM The Grey Fox web page says "Site Last Updated 6/22/04 08:50 AM ." There's a link to a discussion group, and there are messages posted about this. I didn't read it (need to cookify), but it looks like one of them is the one Vixen posted. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Jeri Date: 28 Jul 04 - 10:59 AM Sorry - I lost my relevance by a-typin' too slow. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Big Mick Date: 28 Jul 04 - 11:02 AM Folks, I just spoke with Lisa and this is a fact. The instruments were taken from their home by someone over a period of time. This is someone that they were allowing to stay in their home as an act of kindness. They have recovered a number of instruments, and I have listed them here. I cannot give you much more detail yet, but I do know what happened. In order not to jeopardize the case that is ongoing, I cannot put it here. But when the time is right, I will let you know exactly what happened and the perp's, and businesses, that were involved in fencing the stuff. Here is the updated list which shows what has been recovered so far: 1960 Gibson ES 335 TD A35439 RECOVERED 1947 Gibson Super 400 A968 RECOVERED 1958 Fender Telecaster 027682 RECOVERED 1967 Rickenbacker 366/12 GI 4102 1959 Fender Stratocaste 34301 1970 Martin D 12-20 285014 1944 Gibson J-45 RECOVERED 1947 Gibson LG 2 1951 Gibson J 45 FON 5716 23 1952 Gibson L 50 FON 270293 RECOVERED 1935 Gibson L50 FON 860 RECOVERED 1964 Gibson TBird IV 198758 1959 Gretsch 6120 31248 RECOVERED 195? Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Jul 04 - 11:08 AM Thanks Mick. I apologise for questioning it but I'm afraid the info reported did seem odd to me and I've seen more hoaxes than I care to think of. Sorry Vixen. As Mooh said, I hope they get the bastard(s). Doubt they will turn up in the UK but that won't prevent me noting these serial numbers. Jon |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Big Mick Date: 28 Jul 04 - 11:16 AM Nothing to apologize for, Jon. I thought it suspicious which is why I called. I am anxious to share more details, and will in a day or so. But the investigation seems to be at a delicate moment. Lisa Husted is a very nice person, and justifyably angry. This collection was a lifetime endeavor of her and her husband Phil. More later, Mick |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Vixen Date: 28 Jul 04 - 12:09 PM Barbara, thank you for the update-- Big Mick, thank you much for the phonework and the updated list-- Guest,Jon, no need to apologize to me, I appreciate your skepticism Nice to have more detail...looks like the investigation, however delicate, is producing the desired results... Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Mooh Date: 29 Jul 04 - 07:19 AM Notice the details of the electrics but the mandolins and violins are listed as kind of an afterthought. Hard to help when they're not described. If one sees a Tele bass, alarms might go off, but they might as well forget the mandos and fiddles if there's no descriptions publicised. Eyes peeled, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: ALERT Stolen Instruments From: Big Mick Date: 29 Jul 04 - 10:29 AM Mooh, I have just now emailed Lisa and asked her to provide us with more detail on the mando's and fiddles. All the best, Mick |

Subject: Stolen Instruments---Database? From: saulgoldie Date: 23 Nov 21 - 01:35 PM As I was looking over some of the guitars offered for sale to compare to some that I want to sell, I got to wondering... There have been many reports here of stolen instruments. Is there some place where there is some sort of database where we can look to make sure that what we are about to buy is not listed as having been stolen? Some of the prices I saw seemed like the owner might not have known exactly what they had. This could suggest that the instrument is stolen. Just wondering. Thanks, Saul |
