Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: GUEST,Guest Anto Date: 27 Jul 18 - 08:02 AM There is a brilliant version on the album mi.da:za by Cork band North Cregg. It is sung by John Neville. Well worth a listen. |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: GUEST,Jennifer Burdoo Date: 22 Jan 17 - 08:47 PM I learned this recently from North Sea Gas and am trying to work out the chords to their version. They did it with a slight change in tune that feels more natural to me, somehow - I don't know how to describe it. Fewer drastic changes in pitch. |

Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: GUEST,Jim Date: 18 Nov 04 - 12:02 PM SLIP JIGS & REELS (Steve Tilston) [Capo 2] He was barely a man in his grandfather's coat D G Sewn into the lining a ten-shilling note D A7 D Goodbye to the family, goodbye to the shore D G 'Till I taste good fortune you'll see me no more D A7 D G D A7 D G D A7 D A boat on the ocean tossed like a cork D G Then one fine morning they sighted New York D A7 D He stood on the gang-plank and breathed in the air D G "Hello land of plenty, I've come for me share" D A7 D G D A7 D G D A7 D Chorus And he did like the ladies, the rise and the fall A7 D G D A7 D G D Of their ankles and dresses, down on the dance floor A7 D G D A7 D A7 D And rolling the dice and spinning the wheel G D A7 D G But he took most delight in the slip jigs and reels D G D A7 D G D G D A7 D G D A7 D There's talk of a pistol and some say a knife But all are agreed there was somebody's wife Some kind of commotion, a terrible fight He left a man dead and ran into the night On a train from St. Louis, just one jump ahead He slept one eye open, a six-gun in bed He dreamt of the mountains and green fields of home While crossing the plains where the buffalo roam Chorus Oh, bad reputation's a hard thing to bear Mothers pour scorn and young children they stare But he found consolation in flash company Life ain't so bad with a girl on your knee Oh they called him the Kid, and by twenty-one All that he knew was the power of the gun And by twenty-three, he'd shot five men down Who got in his way as he rambled around Chorus There's bones in the desert and buzzards that fly In the highest of circles, just wishing he'd die But in matters of cruelty, it must be said A landlord will pick your bones before you're dead It was wild mescaleros, I heard people say In the deadliest ambush near old Santa Fe And a young buck was taken dressed in a coat And inside the lining, a ten-shilling note Chorus (twice} |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: breezy Date: 15 Nov 04 - 03:30 PM guest The chord pattern is in fact D G D A7 4 times for the verse and loads a times in the chorus NOT as you think The problem is learning the song 2nd hand Its on the Greening Wind Although not all can play like Steve its unfair to not listen to his version as ,after all said and done probably your 2 hand source has. So there you are Steve is booked for a return visit to the St Albans Folk-song club on June 10th 2005 and he is a very obliging person. Nice song book , I wouldnt have got Naked Highwayman off the ground without it. |

Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: GUEST,Jim Date: 15 Nov 04 - 12:31 PM GUEST - Contact me by e-mail (jim@dmservices.co.uk) and I'll be glad to oblige. Steve plays the song in DADGAD, and I play a variation on his version but keep the same tune/rhythm. Whilst it is based mainly around 2 chords (capoed at the 3rd fret) they are in fact D and A7. What makes the song special (apart from the tune and the lyrics of course) are Steve's superb guitar-licks. His CD's are well worth buying - especially Such and Such, which is just superb. |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: GUEST Date: 15 Nov 04 - 07:41 AM I heard this song in a folk club a few months ago, and thought it superb, but can't remember the melody exactly, other than the chorus . Can anyone send me / point me to the melody for it - the words are on DT but not the melody, and I would like to be able to perform it in the local folk club. I can't seem to get either of the links to the music book or the MP3 to work. Thanks for your help. Regards Tim |

Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: Abby Sale Date: 05 Aug 04 - 07:22 PM Stewart: I'm pretty sure that version was worked out by Peter Bellamy. At least according to the text in Wake the Vaulted Echoes, he "apologizes" to Tilson for going high on 'wheel.' Bellamy do good job, I think. |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: katlaughing Date: 05 Aug 04 - 05:30 PM My favourite musicians from Montana (looks like they're in New Mexicao, now), Wilson and McKee do an excellent version of it, very rollicking, on their CD, "The Pattern." Doesn't look as though they have it available on their website anymore, but if you write they may have. I could email you an audio file of it. Send me a PM with your email addy if you are interested, okay? Wlecome to the Mudcat, kat |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 05 Aug 04 - 04:12 PM Thanks ever so much to everyone who has offered advice and links. Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: Stewart Date: 05 Aug 04 - 03:59 PM Oops, I should have said this is from the CD "Setanta." "Early Rising" is the latest CD from Setanta - also a great CD. S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: Stewart Date: 05 Aug 04 - 03:55 PM Here's a MP3 of the whole song by Finn MacGinty and Hanz Araki from their CD "Early Rising" by Setanta - click here. This is on Hanz Araki's web site. There are many versions of this. The one I learned is mainly from this CD, although I have varied it some. I heard Mick Moloney do a great version of this at the Agusta Heritage Center last summer, but I don't think he has recorded it. He does it much slower and with his Irish accent it adds great authenticity to the story. I think one should listen to various versions and then decide on one's on interpretation rather than just copy someone else's version as the "definitive" one. Cheers, S. in Seattle |
Subject: RE: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: John in Brisbane Date: 04 Aug 04 - 10:04 PM Unless MMario contradicts me, it appears that the tune has not been posted. I've never heard the song so would be happy to notate it if anyone has the score. Please PM me. Regards, John |

Subject: Music;Slip Jigs and Reels From: Bloke in the Corner Date: 04 Aug 04 - 01:42 PM Yes, that's it, can anyone point me to a source for the music of this excellent Steve Tilson song? I can probably work it out after a fashion, but would like to get the melody spot on. Also, can anyone tell me where I might hear it played/sung? |
