The second time she sings the verse about Nancy Dawson, I can't get a line. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: Roberto Date: 11 Aug 04 - 07:56 AM Maybe "and the hauley high-l-o" could be "and the hauley hilo"... And I take the chance for a last call for Maddy Prior's CD. Roberto |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: GUEST,Lighter at work Date: 11 Aug 04 - 08:12 AM All of these versions originate with that sung by A. L. Lloyd back in the '60s. They're nearly identical. Lloyd sang "And a hauley hi-o!" Stan Hugill knew some ribald verses. Did he ever sing them for anybody? If so, what were they? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: GUEST,Anne Croucher Date: 11 Aug 04 - 11:54 AM I remember hearing this when down in deepest Cornwall in the late 60s there was a verse: Little Ruby Riddle She broke her fiddle Clean cross the middle the responses were as given by Roberto, above As it was for school children I supose any rude verses were either cleaned up or not sung. (I was on a Biolgy field trip, the effects of the Tory Canyon oil had played havoc with the local plant and animal life) Anne |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: Snuffy Date: 11 Aug 04 - 05:57 PM At the Shellback Chorus winter reunion this year, I sang a version with a verse for each of the ladies present (over 20 of them). many of the verses were a bit "near the knuckle" but only for rhyming purpose (of course) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: MoorleyMan Date: 11 Aug 04 - 06:07 PM Anne, I've always wondered how they calculated the effects of the Tory Canyon disaster - or did they just provide a Conservative estimate? Haul me away! M |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: EBarnacle Date: 12 Aug 04 - 12:31 AM Hugill cites the song as originating as a cargo-working song in Quebec and elsewhere. Several variants seem to have originated in the West Indies. He learned it from one of his primary sources, Harding. Whall cites it as Cheer'ly Man, as does Colcord. She cites mention of the song in Dana's "Three years before the Mast." |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Maddy Prior's Haul Her Away From: GUEST,Anne Croucher Date: 12 Aug 04 - 12:06 PM The coastline was clean of the Tory Canyon oil spill when we arrived, just about, there were small blobs left under rocks - but the sea was clear and the sand was just sand - life was almost non existant - but there were just a few plants animals left - or perhaps they had been brought in. visiting a few years later there was little evidence of the mass extinction - but it must have been horrible to see everything lying dead and oily on blackened beaches. Cheerly man is a different but related shanty - I used to use that for the main sail hoist and Haul em away for the fore sail, as there is a slower larger pull in Cheerly man and Haul em away is more suited to the faster lighter work of a fores'l. It was just me and a small yacht, but it was helpful to keep the rhythem slow enough to get both sails hoisted and still be able to walk back to the cockpit. Anne |
