Subject: RE: Lyrics to Calling Joe Hill From: GUEST,Georgina Boyes Date: 04 Sep 04 - 01:04 PM I agree, it's a great song, written by the equally brilliant Ray Hearne. The words are available in the booklet to his album, 'Broad Street Ballads', No Masters, NMCD17. See www.nomasters.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Lyrics to Calling Joe Hill From: Willa Date: 04 Sep 04 - 04:45 PM Also available on Roy Bailey's New Directions in the Old CFCD 402 |
Subject: ADD: Calling Joe Hill From: Willa Date: 04 Sep 04 - 05:27 PM Have just listened to my copy and here's what Roy sings. I won't put this as a lyrics add thread as there are one or two words I'm not absolutely sure of- any errors are due to my hearing and not Roy's beautiful, clear singing. Calling Joe Hill (Ray Hearne) Where are the languages we spoke, sparked from the anvil, When we were music-minded folk? Calling Joe Hill. Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Rhymes in the broken beech wood ring, tuneless and chill Into the darkness echoing. Calling Joe Hill. Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Leaving the wildernesses fall, fearing no ill, Into the deepest note of all. Calling Joe Hill. Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Through the archangel-haunted night, Whose songs may still quicken the dreamer's second sight. Calling Joe Hill. Teller of elemental wrong, teach me the skill- Maker to maker, tongue to tongue. Calling Joe Hill. Songs for the hopelessness of friends hauled through the mill. Songs with a meaning, in the end. Calling Joe Hill. These are the heart's imaginings, when there's a will Even the broken beeches sing Calling Joe Hill. Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill Calling, calling, calling Joe Hill from the singing of Roy Bailey |

Subject: RE: Req/ADD: Calling Joe Hill (Ray Hearne) From: Art Thieme Date: 13 Jan 08 - 02:48 PM In other threads I tell about meeting and tape recording 93 year old Paul Durst in 1961 in Chicago. Paul, born in 1868, knew Joe Hill, and, indeed had shipped out with Joe on a cargo ship to the Hawaiian Islands. My tapes of wobbly Paul Durst are mentioned in ARCHIE GREEN'S recent book of I.W.W. songs and lore titled "THE BIG RED SONG BOOK" It was very nice to get some notoriety there for those old tapes from 47 years ago. Mr. Green says those tapes are just about the only field recordings made of an actual Wobbly from the early 20th century singing and talking ever made. Don't mourn. Organize! Art Thieme |

Subject: ADD: Calling Joe Hill (Ray Hearne) From: Joe Offer Date: 31 Mar 15 - 06:36 PM I'm transcribing lyrics for this song for the upcoming Rise Again Songbook. I can't find a recording by Ray Hearne - it's supposed to be on his Broad Street Ballads album, but I can't find it anywhere. Can anybody help me get a copy of that cut? I do have the recording by Roy Bailey. In general, I agree with Willa's transcription, but I have a few disagreements that I've underlined. Any corrections to my transcription? Here's the Roy Bailey recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jveZ-WUtqkU. Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Calling Joe Hill (Ray Hearne) From: GUEST,Gerry Date: 02 Apr 15 - 05:11 AM Joe, I take it that means you have corrected beechwoods to beeches, which is how Hearne sings it on his CD and how he has it in the liner notes. |
