Ebbie suggested the idea for this thread in the Exceptional People thread. (who introduced you to Mudcat?)

Sandra in Sydney and jenny kept talking about mudcat over a period of time. I looked in here and there but didnt really get it. then jennyo came over one day in December and gave me a mudcat lesson (thanks jen).

Mudcat has been good for me - i work for the government in quite a controlled workplace, and have to be diplomatic with the clients i work with. as part of my job I'm discouraged from commenting in public on any political issue, and have to maintain a low profile. mudcat has given me the freedom of being able to comment (under my pseudonym freda) and so has helped reinforce who i really am, as opposed to who i am at work.

mudcat is a forum for the old storytelling and discussion that used to happen around the campfire. I have lived in the Newtown area (sydney) for 20 years or so. Up the road in King st there used to be an illegal gambling joint. All the old Greek men used to sit outside having coffee, smoking cigarettes, and talking and arguing in the sun.

mudcat is like a cyber version of that - a wealth of information, and the great experience of talking, debating with people around the planet.

who introduced you to mudcat, or did you just stumble across it through the web?

I stumbled across it about 3 years ago but only became a member last year.I think its got very popular in the UK.

About 9 months ago, I was searching for the lyrics of Jack O Diamonds by Lonnie Donegan, for a very specific reason.
I did a search on google, and saw a mudcat link.
I went to have a look and posted my thread on the above subject. I got lots of help and finally finished up with the correct lyrics.
I joined as a member straight away, having thumbed through some of the threads.
Due to joining Mudcat and without intending to, 3 months later I finished up starting a folk club in Market Rasen and its still going. I am not even an artist!!!!!
So much is the power and influence of MUdcat.
Excellent website.

At Durham (UK) Folkworks Summer School four years ago I met an American fiddler who at the end of the week handed me a piece of paper saying "You might be interested in this" It was Mudcat web address.

I bought a computer magazine with a cover disk on it in about (?) 1996. My eyes popped out of my head when I saw that it included the entire Digital Tradition.

Then I came here and lurked, for a year or two

then I signed up, forgot my name and password.

Signed up again.

It is the most useful, entertaining, informative place for me personally on the web.

Having been talked into getting a 'puter with internet facility by a variety of folkie friends who seemed to spend all their time sending each other e-mails about everything under the sun it was a natural progression to follow Admiral (and others) into Mudcat . As with a lot
of other people I started just looking , then posted a few times as a named Guest , then decided to join - AND have never regretted it .

Found out about it through Bill D. and Rita. Lurked here for quite a while, in awe of the knowledge,----- til we got a decent computer at home. It's also a window on not just one but so many worlds. But fearfully addictive.

Blame Dani for my appearance on Mudcat. For a couple of years she had urged me to go with her to this thing she called the Getaway. I finally said OK. Went. Was wowed by the FSGW and the Mudcat folks, and joined as soon as I got home (with Carol C.'s coat.)

My brother in Paris, whom I don't see very often, decided he would like to get me a good Xmas/birthday present near the end of 2002, and he conspired with my son, who is a bit of a computer wiz, to get me a computer, with all the bells and whistles, and a year's internet connection paid for.

Enter my friend Sandra in Sydney, who, as soon as she heard about my good fortune, started nagging me to join Mudcat. I posted as a guest a few times, but had not got around to joining, till along came Daylia, also a guest. Anyway, we encouraged each other to join, and did, within a few hours of each other.

From then on it was all downhill :-) - the rest is history. When freda got the internet on at home, I encouraged her to join, and she took to Mudcat like the proverbial duck to water.

I've learned a lot about computers in the last couple of years - still have a lot more to learn, but my favourite place on the net has to be Mudcat. I love it. So thanks, Sandra. And thanks freda for getting me hooked on the chatroom.

I watched the Digital Tradition get born by knowing Dick Greenhaus and Susan of DT and others on the East coast of the USA who were converting notebooks to computer disks, so when Dick found Max and they worked out how to combine the DT with Max's site, I knew about it early and was posting within a few weeks of its origin...almost 8 years now!

I guess you could say I got here through an online Peter, Paul and Mary fan club on Prodigy. When Prodigy started charging by the minute, the surviving members of the group moved to a computer board in Maine, operated by Noel "Paul" Stookey of PP&M. I became fairly well acquainted with Noel through that bulletin board, and that was a nice experience. Also got me several concert tickets and backstage passes, and one time I sat right next to Noel in his dressing room while he sang a new song. I didn't like the song very much, but his guitar work was extraordinary and I love his resonant voice.

One of the Prodigy people sent me a copy of the Digital Tradition on floppy disks in about 1992, and Noel had an online copy of the DT and also a link to rec.music.folk. I also discovered alt.music.lyrics, and developed an interest in sleuthing for songs. From there I was led to the Xerox site for the Digital Tradition. I think that disappeared sometime in 1996, and then Max opened up Mudcat as a forum for Digital Tradition requests, submission, and discussion on October 1, 1996 (click). It took me until early January, 1997, to find Mudcat. Been here ever since. Blame it on Peter, Paul and Mary.

My sister's (wee redhead, third from the left) group, The Pyrates Royale, has a link to Mudcat on their website. I was visiting my parents' house at the same time she was in July 2000, and I wanted to find some European circus music to play on my accordion. She brought up her site, showed me the link, and gave me a short lesson on how to post. Prior to then, I was an internet virgin.

Through the Mudcat, and the people I've gotten to know here, my life has changed completely from what it was before. And that includes the wonderful help I've recieved in becoming a better accordion player.

Seamus Kennedy got me into this fine mess.

Actually I was at a concert by Seamus, and I met him as he was selling some of his fine cds. (yes, I bought one). I asked him if he had lyrics and chords to his music, as I would like to learn some of his songs. He said he learned everything by ear, but that I might want to try Mudcat.org. I did, and I love it.

Still love Seamus, his music, his lyrics and his guitar playing. Wish he would produce a song book though.

Hows about it Seamus? You could call it, "Everything I Learned by Ear."

It was Art Thieme what done it, as I discussed in more depth on the Excceptional People thread referred to. Art told me about this place first, and through time I heard Sandy and Caroline Paton mention, Lisa Null and others. First time I stopped in here, it didn't interest me and it was a few months before I checked it out again.

Bob Bolton was always talking about Mudcat, always putting the URL on the top of the page of interesting websites in "Mulga Wire". So when I eventually got this dear little laptop & went online, the first site I visited was Mudcat. I lurked a bit before contibuting (as Guest, Sandra) then joining & have never looked back.

Lots of us apparently contributed to Mudcat before posting as members, but I contributed before I even used the Internet! Bob posted some pictures I took of the 2001 visit of Charlie Noble & Landlady's Daughter. One of these pics even includes freda.

After my recent crash when I was re-establishing my bookmarks, the first one I added was Mudcat, which is now my homepage.

Like many of us, I think, I used the old DigiTrad for lyrics until it was no longer to be found. Some time went by before a friend told me that someone else had picked it up. Took me quite awhile to click on the Forum though- I thought it was a Chat Room. (Horrors!

Finally I started visiting, lurking about, until January 1, 2000 when a thread was posted asking people all over the world to check in to report on how the Y2K thing was affecting us.

Now I can't imagine doing without it.

I was always looking for lyrics back then, and an aquaintance at a local session mentioned mudcat. I still browse the lyrics regularly, and I am grateful. I tok on the 'Thomas the Rhymer" name when I was just looking up and learning the song ("C" words with the "A" tune) and the rest is history.

Cllr - not true. I'm still vertical and breathing and avoiding Ampthill. However, not avoiding Mudcat although only as a guest at the moment (work internet can be SO helpful). Found out about it from the likes of Leadfingers and the Admiral and found it both useful and entertaining and slightly addictive. Did have a dodgy moment some time ago when I typed in Mudchute instead of Mudcat and found myself up Bow Creek without a paddle and had to wait for the tide to float me back.

My old Rhode Island bluegrass band, the Roughstone Ramblers, had a reunion in Vermont in 1999 or 2000. I flew in from Detroit. A couple of my former bandmates told me about Mudcat. They're alive and well but they don't post any more. Meanwhile you're all stuck with me. I've learned a lot on the Mudcat and greatly enjoy reading and posting.

Song sourcing and found when the song did not come up on the D.T., you could asked and it usually would show up.
After tracking threads and being in the middle of the BS threads, I had to retreat my activities. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. I still like to look in every once in while and check the threads.
Joe has done a great job as thread cop and the Mudcat looks much healthier than in the past when gargoyle(s) were in the practice of ruining every decent thread that came along.
That's how I got here and the reason I come and go.

By accident. When searching the lyrics of the Greenland Whale Fishery I was led by a link to the DigiTrad. Must have happened in 1999.

Got here via Rock Chick when we she came back to my place after a late night session a little the worse for wear. "I know! says she" (Big She) that's her nickname NO reflection on body size :-) better add that in case she reads this. Lets log you on to Mudcat it's a fantastic site, so she sorted it all out for me and even named me bless her! Been adicted ever since.
