Howdy all! I need a little assist here. I'm trying to locate the lyrics for a Big Band era song, "Who's Sorry Now." I have found 1 or 2 places on the web that offer lyrics as sung by Marie Osmand or Connie Francis. Both these versions have this following verse:

Right to the end, just like a friend
I tried to warn you, somehow
You had your way, now you must pay
I'm glad that you're sorry now

But I have a recording of this song by Alvino Rey's orchestra and sung by JoAnn Ryan. It's much faster and jazzier but I KNOW she doesn't sing:

"Right to the end, just like a friend"

It sounds more like

"Right through the air just like a threat" but what sense does that make??

So if anyone has this version of the song or a similar one and can identify what she actually is singing I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO'S SORRY NOW? (Snyder/Kalmar/Ruby)

From http://www.oldmanriver.ch/30_repertoire/30w20_who's_sorry_now_d.htm

WHO'S SORRY NOW?
Ted Snyder & Bert Kalmar/Harr Ruby (1923)

You smiled when we parted. It hurt me somehow.
I thought there was nothing worthwhile.
The tables are turning and you're crying now,
While I am just learning to smile.
Although I forgive you, I cannot forget
How you shattered all my ideals.
You smiled when I told you that you would regret,
And now you know just how it feels.

CHORUS: Who's sorry now?
Who's sorry now?
Whose heart is aching for breaking each vow?
Who's sad and blue?
Who's crying too?
Just like I cried over you.
Right to the end,
Just like a friend,
I tried to warn you somehow.
You had your way,
Now you must pay;
I'm glad that you're sorry now.

Here are the words sung by Marion Harris, May, 1923, transcribed from a sound file at The Red Hot Jazz Archive:

WHO'S SORRY NOW?

VERSE: You smiled when we parted. It hurt me somehow.
I thought there was nothing worthwhile.
The tables are turning and you're crying now,
While I am just learning to smile.

CHORUS: Who's sorry now?
Who's sorry now?
Whose heart is aching for breaking each vow?
Who's sad and blue?
Who's crying too,
Just like I cried over you?
Right to the end,
Just like a friend,
I tried to warn you somehow.
You had your way.
Now you must pay.
I'm glad that you're sorry now.

SPOKEN: You will never know the pain you brought to me
When I realized that it was not to be.
For each hour of gladness that I spent with you,
There were days of sadness when you proved untrue.
Every single word you told me, I believed.
You knew love was blind and that's why you deceived.
How you took advantage of my faith and trust
All my tender hopes you trampled in the dust.
Now that it's all over, I'm so glad that we're through.
I'm the one who's happy. You're the one who's blue.
You will count the hours spent in vain regret
While your heart is breaking, trying to forget.
Now you know it doesn't pay to play with fate.
You have learned your lesson just a bit too late.

SUNG: I'm glad that you're sorry now.

From the sheet music at Indiana University Sheet Music Collections:

WHO'S SORRY NOW?
Words, Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby. Music, Ted Snyder.
New York: Waterson, Berlin & Snyder Co., © 1923.

1. You smiled when we parted. It hurt me somehow.
I thought there was nothing worthwhile.
The tables are turning, and you're crying now,
While I am just learning to smile.

CHORUS: Who's sorry now? Who's sorry now?
Whose heart is aching for breaking each vow?
Who's sad and blue? Who's crying, too,
Just like I cried over you?
Right to the end, just like a friend,
I tried to warn you somehow.
You had your way. Now you must pay.
I'm glad that you're sorry now.

2. Although I forgive you, I cannot forget
How you shattered all my ideals.
You smiled when I told you that you would regret,
And now you know just how it feels.

Poor Connie Francis. The last I heard, she and Neil Sedaka were giving whining lessons on the east coast. Sadly, I don't think I have ever heard any other versions of this song, which was really written in the early traditional jazz era.
