I'm looking for some common folksongs and tunes from Belguim. I'm completely ignorant on the matter and there's a young boy getting guitar instruction who is interested. I'm chiefly interested in the melodies. Any ideas?

Many thanks as always.

Peace, Mooh.

If you're looking for Flemish material, I suggest you mail info@muzmoz.be to contact the Volksmuziekgilde at Gooik in Belgium. They're involved in a range of excellent work with young musicians and should either have tune books they've produced themsleve or be able to offer advice on where to get them.

However, I'm not sure if there's an equivalent organisation for Wallonia, the French-speaking parts of Belgium.

Mooh,

I have a cd of the Belgian folkgroup "'t Kliekske". It's probably not very easy to find, but the cd also has printed versions of all the tunes that are on the cd (=17). If you are interested, I could send them to you (it will be just normal notation, I'm not very familiar with ABC).

T.

There is a very old Flemish farewell song, called "Ik zeg adieu", published in 1645 in the "Antwarpse Liedboek". If you type the title of the song into Google you'll get back a number of sites with the words, and more important, a midi file that you can play. The tune is lovely, yet simple.

There are several CDs of Belgian folksongs on the Ocora label from France, and a Flemish label called Wild Boar Music with releases by the groups Piccard & Masure, Ambrozijn, Kadril and Twalseree. They're all worthwhile, though it's been a while since I'vew listened to them. I'm sure you'd find some great melodies on them.
