I am a folk singer who would like to get a lot of songs with Christian themes together. They don't necessarily have to be considered 'gospel' or contemporary christian- just some stuff with biblical themes, etc. For example: John McCutcheon's "One Man's Trash", Baez's "Blessed Are", really anything on this order. I would love your suggestions!!!

"Tomorrow shall be my dancing day", collected and published by William Sandys in "Christmas Carols, Ancient an Modern, including the most popular in the West of England, and the airs to which they are sung. Also specimens of French Provincial Carols", London, Richard Beckley, 1833, is a lovely carol in the public domain which almost everyone loves who hears it.

Here are the words of "Tomorrow shall be my dancing day" as I sing them. I have made a selection of Sandys' verses and altered a few words:

Tomorrow shall be my dancing day, I would my true love did so chance to see the legend of my play to call my true love to my dance

REFRAIN: Sing Oh! my love, Oh! my love, my love, my love! This have I done for my true love.

Then I was born of a virgin pure from her I took fleshly substance. Thus I was knit to man's nature to call my true love to my dance.

(repeat refrain)

Then afterwards baptized I was. The Holy Ghost on me did glance. My father's voice heard from above to call my true love to my dance.

(repeat refrain) Into the desert I was led where I fasted without substance. The devil bade me make stones my bread to have me break my true love's dance.

(repeat refrain)

Before Pilate the priests me brought, where Barabbas had deliverance. They scourged me and set me at nought- judged me to die to lead the dance.

(repeat refrain)

Then on a cross high hanged I was. A spear into my side did glance. There issued forth both water and blood to call my true love to my dance.

(repeat refrain)

Then down to hell I made my way for my true love's deliverance; then rose again on the third day up to my true love and the dance.

(repeat refrain)

Then into heaven I did ascend where now I dwell in sure substance at the right hand of God, that man may come into the general dance.

(repeat refrain)

Bill Stains "All God's Children Got A Place In The Choir" and "The Quiet Faith Of Man"

Also:"The Master Of The Sheepfold"

The reason these mean so very much to me is that they all pretty much say that EVERYONE IS WELCOME. That is really refreshing in the face of so much exclusivity from many socalled organized religions.

I'd suggest song from Bob Franke, like The Great Storm Is Over; or maybe songs by Sydney Carter, like Julian of Norwich.

Give Bread and Fishes a listen. Phil Ochs, actually Ewan Macolls, The Ballad of the Carpenter, but I have only seen it on a Phil Ochs album. Doc Watson's recording of Old Camp Meetin' Time.

I've found that a lot of sea shanties have christian verses added to the end of them as they have moved through the years (such as "The Captain Cried All Hands"), so it might be worth having a trawl through these, as it were.

Have you heard Jean Ritchie's "COOL OF THE DAY"? Lovely song about God returning, as He did in Eden, to walk in the cool of the day, and questioning mankind's stewardship of the earth.

You may try the CD "Lovely In The Dances -- Songs of Sydney Carter". All of the 14 songs have a Christian theme -- Carter was the wman who wrote Lord Of The Dance, which is sung on this CD by Maddie Prior formerly of Steeleye Span and now of the Silly Sisters. He performs on the CD along with folkies like Maddie Prior, Melanie Harrold, Shusha, etc.

Osmosys Records, OSMO CD008. It is a British release but I assume that you can have it ordered.
