Subject: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Herga Kitty Date: 10 Oct 04 - 01:49 PM It was a wonderful session run by MGAS in the Globe Room at the Reindeer yesterday afternoon, and did indeed, as hoped, run seamlessly into Snuffy's evening singaround. The use of an inflatable plastic cat as an MBS-twig substitute, and ritual deflating at closing time, were also inspired. (Luckily, no-one tried to deflate the real moggy that was mooching around the Globe Room.) Thanks Hil, and thanks to Merek'Dary for programming it. (The rest of the festival was pretty good too!) Kitty |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: George Papavgeris Date: 10 Oct 04 - 02:39 PM Indeed, a great session, with lots of high points, smoothly and expertly run by MGAS. It also has to be said that the 'Catters own discipline and generosity towards each other (and I am not only talking about the Quality Street) was exemplary. Would that other "normal" sessions throughout the year around the country were all so well managed and behaved! This just HAS to become a permanent feature of future Banbury fests... Well done, Hils Merek & Dary! George |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Scooby Doo Date: 10 Oct 04 - 02:58 PM What a great afternoon i had at the gathering even after the bicycle rack syndrome from the night. Well done MGAS and to Merek and dary to help organise the gathering. I loved the purple quality street, "sorry" Mortica that i had the last one. Hope you all had a save and fretless journey home. Thanks again, Scooby |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 10 Oct 04 - 03:11 PM A really enjoyable festival, one of the highlights for me was the Mudgathering. great singing, great people. I'll echo the the comments above ~ truly friendly generous people. Good to meet more of you. Well done Hils, you did a good job ~ hope the cold & the nose are improving. All credit to Derek & Mary too, Banbury goes from strength to strength ~ & Yes! Banbury must have Mudgathering next year. Regards to all, M |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Eye Lander Date: 10 Oct 04 - 04:31 PM Well that was 'A bit of a do' wasn't it. What a brilliant time. Well done Hilary, you'll be running Singarounds all over the shop soon. And George - loved your new song, was glad you tried it out on us. EL |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: John Routledge Date: 10 Oct 04 - 04:50 PM Great songs and great atmosphere. Thanks for your efforts Hil - You left a great legacy with Snuffy who carried on in fine style. All in all a fine well organised festival with lovely atmosphere throughout. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: My guru always said Date: 10 Oct 04 - 05:19 PM Well, back home safe (still full of cold & trying not to have any more nose-bleeds) & what a lovely surprise to find this thread. Thanks CatsAll :o) I'm just so glad that Merek'n'Dary programmed the MudGather into Banbury festival. Meeting fellow Catters is always a high point of Festivals & this gather gave us a chance for a really good get-together!! The Meet itself & the Sing virtually ran themselves after a bit of organisation & the Blow-Up Cat. So glad that I had the winning ticket for the Quality Street in the raffle the night before & wasn't it strange that we managed to get right the way to the bottom of the tin *grin* Wonderful fellowship, singing & fantastic songs (some very emotional) - Yes, we MUST do this again..... Will post the final list on the original thread (tomorrow probably) as it'll conclude the epic story of the Banbury MudGather 2004. Apart from all the Fab photos that I hope people will send in to Jeff for the Events section! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: GUEST,padgett Date: 11 Oct 04 - 04:10 AM Well what a do! Nice to meet you all and put a few more faces to 'handles' I apologies to ALL for having a few before the official start, I was in the Reindeer from 12 noon and had a long conversation with Scooby Doo! Thanks to Christine for the shoulder to lean on! Sorry I had to go early on Sunday, I had left the car lights on all day and got the AA out at 8am, 15 minutes and a banana later I went home to Barnsley ~ I've not recovered yet! Ray Padgett |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: marion.h Date: 11 Oct 04 - 04:34 AM Didn't make the gather this year due to Stewarding commitments. Will try next year (and at other fests) Great weekend - nice to see everyone again |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Dave Bryant Date: 11 Oct 04 - 04:40 AM Great session Hils and congratulations on a good turnout. It's always nice to be able to put a few more faces to mudcat names. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: MoorleyMan Date: 11 Oct 04 - 06:24 AM Just managed to crank up the steam-driven computer again, having returned after a fantastic weekend at M&D's wonderful festival - saw this thread (already! - well what else would I expect from Catters?!).... so I must post, add my pennorth and echo loudly what's been said above ie the Gather was great, a weekend highlight definitely and everything a good session and sing should be. Excellent singing, fine songs, separate room, great acoustics, tremendous (underline that) atmosphere, welcomingly smoke-free, lovely friendly Catters. Well well done everyone, specially Guru, and Hils do get weller soon, we cant afford to lose that super voice of yours now can we? Sorry i missed the rollcall bit near the end of the afternoon - it came at that crucial point in the daily body-cycle where flagging necessitated feeding! i'll put that right next time - but at least i've put a few more names to voices/faces now. Yes, let's make the Gather a feature of future Banburies (is that a real word?) - and like you Morticia i'm getting ready for Bedworth already, see you there! so thanks again to all of you M |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: alanww Date: 11 Oct 04 - 07:48 AM Well done, Hils and, of course, Derek & Mary! What was the final tally of Mudcatters who signed the register? "I'll fathon the bowl...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Essex Girl Date: 11 Oct 04 - 08:15 AM Hilary, you said you don't see me post, well here I am. Thanks for a great session, must do it again.See you soon. Linda |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Snuffy Date: 11 Oct 04 - 09:59 AM A truly wonderful occasion, Hil. And it must become a regular feature of Banbury (and other festivals too perhaps) Sorry that I too seem to have missed the rollcall bit near the end of the afternoon. Was that when we poor Shellbacks were shanghaied away to t'Mill? There were quite a few Catters there that I'd never met before. As a singer I'm not complaining, but there were very few instruments in evidence, even as accompaniment. Were there no instrumentalist Catters at Banbury this weekend, or did you feel uncomfortable with so many singers around? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Moses Date: 11 Oct 04 - 12:01 PM Great session - lovely to meet so many good folks - sorry I had to nip off before hearing Micca. Hope to remedy that soon. (Herga tonight to see Les (Frog), Micca??) Did I understand there's another Gather at Bedworth? If there is - see y'all there! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: My guru always said Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:18 PM Yes Snuffy, we had a roll-call while all the Shellbacks were missing which was a bit of a shame!! Should have thought of it earlier *smack* I too wondered about the lack of instrumentalists. I'd hoped to hear Ian MacFlute, but he put his instrument away & skipped his turn. Is it the case that there are more Catters who are interested in song than music? Certainly there were Catters who didn't manage to get into the Gather who joined in a more music-oriented session in the back bar of the Reindeer. It would have been marvellous to combine the two had space been available. Linael - you're not actually a gate-crasher you know!!! Sorry to have missed you 8_Pints & Sue vG, had been hoping to hear you!! Will pop you on the list of Catter Festival attendees on the MudGather thread when I get it sorted later tonight (before I go to bed with my medicinal hot chocolate & brandy) *grin* |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Snuffy Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:19 PM There will be plenty of us at Bedworth, but I don't think Malc Gurnham has programmed anything. There's still time though! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Micca Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:24 PM Many thanks MGAS for a wonderful time, I have photos and will send them to Jeff as soon as I can, I can not caption them completely( due to a bad attack of CRS) so if you recognise yourself ,or anyone else, PM me and I will try and get corrections made |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Moonunit Date: 11 Oct 04 - 01:42 PM Apologies for not making it to the MudGather - as duellingbouzoukis has already mentioned (on the other Banbury thread), the band were commandeered by the Boxhedge Clippers for a three-hour ceilidh plus sound check! Hope to catch you again at the Bedd'uth! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Mrs.Duck Date: 11 Oct 04 - 02:02 PM Wish I'd been there for the roll call too as I saw a lot of new faces but am not sure who belongs to which name so hope the photos will sort that out. Ducklings certainly enjoyed the Quality street - wondered why they were so quiet!! Well done Hils. See you soon. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Selchie - (RH) Date: 11 Oct 04 - 02:09 PM I too missed the Roll Call, wish I'd been there, had to leave for Fest. Info duties, sorry I missed it. Still trying to put names to faces, although I met many more catters this weekend. Hils, make that hot chocolate & TWO brandies at least. Get well soon. M |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: My guru always said Date: 11 Oct 04 - 04:48 PM Just put the list on the other thread & counted up - there were 66 Catters (including a few GUESTs) who either got in to the Gather room or made good use of a session in the back bar! There were definitely 10 other Catters at the festival & I've just noticed marion.h on this thread who I've missed already so that makes 11 at least.... Any More?? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: My guru always said Date: 11 Oct 04 - 05:03 PM The biggest Thanks are really due to Max, Pene Azul, Joe Offer & all the other hard-working Elves who have created & maintained the MudCat in order to bring us together in our fellowship and joy of music. Thanks to them all for making a difference. May we always have music! |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Oct 04 - 08:49 AM I've already mentioned Freda's friend Rosie (Rosie Lee on Mudcat) on the other thread. She missed the Mudgather, but sang in the evening session in the Globe Room. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: GUEST,MMario Date: 12 Oct 04 - 09:39 AM well - looks like 'catters on the east bank of the pond are beginning to be a "presence" - I hope that festivals you gather at are as welcoming and inclusive of the "mudcat" features and folk as FSGW has been with their 'Getaway'. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: GUEST Date: 12 Oct 04 - 09:51 AM We UK Catters see a lot of each other anyway, Mario. There are usually at least 20 Catters at most UK festivals, but Banbury's Mudgather was the first (and hopefully not the last) to be actually programmed by Festival Organisers. A most welcome development. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Dave Bryant Date: 12 Oct 04 - 11:10 AM England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Eire, and the occupied territories surrounding the Humber (especially the latter) have been a considerable "presence" on Mudcat for a long while MMario, as I thought you would have noticed. One of the reasons that we seem to throw rather a lot of insults at each other, is the fact that we do meet up frequently and often tend to know each quite well - this seems to cause some surprise and consternation on your side of the pond. |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: GUEST,MMario Date: 12 Oct 04 - 01:44 PM My comment was mostly tongue in cheek - But I did think that this was the first "official" 'catter/festival conjoining I'd seen or heard about. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Herga Kitty Date: 12 Oct 04 - 03:01 PM At least 20 Catters - well, that's just the Shellbacks for a start? And there's quite a big overlap of Catters with Sidmouth Middle Bar Singers - Banbury was a good place for the Mudcat Gather (as would Bedworth be) because it's in the Midlands. I saw Catters I know from Sidmouth (south west England), and Catters I know from Whitby (north east England), and from several festivals in between! Welcome Padgett! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Menolly Date: 12 Oct 04 - 04:03 PM Not All the Shellbacks are catters! Our founder doesn't even have a computer! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Mo Bradshaw Date: 13 Oct 04 - 07:05 AM Thanks for a lovely session on Sat. It was good to put faces to names, and hear some wonderful songs and singers. I have sung fairly infrequently in the last 20 years, and it gets harder all the time to get the courage, so I intended just listening. The atmosphere and great chorus singing made it easy to sing, though, so, I thank you, and hope to get to more gathers. ( Can't make Bedworth this year, unfortunately.) Mo |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: My guru always said Date: 14 Oct 04 - 05:31 PM Welcome padgett!!! MMario: Am not sure if this was the first official Festival Gather in the UK, but there are bound to be more!! Wish I could get along to Gathers on your side of the pond, but I will have my spies at the Getaway looking for any suggestions *smile* Mo B So glad that you sung (& felt that you could sing in our MadCat company!) Ah yes, wondered where Rosie Lee was, glad she got along for a good sing, would have liked to have heard Rosie again, another time.. Wish I could have stayed for the evening but the cold got me! Ritual deflating of the Cat? hope someone got photos!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: running.hare Date: 15 Oct 04 - 01:32 PM I sadly too missed the rollcall, though I did hear about it Sunday night in the pub from a bemused Non catter who'd wandered in to "A song session" & thought we should of been "getting on with the B---y singing" ggl. But I felt the need to dance & the was only the 1 opportunity.. so I extracted myself from the claws of the Cat (Litterly!) Thanks for a loverly session all - ohh & the rappers Great to see / meet you all. Lizabee xxxxx |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Gather Banbury - thanks to MGAS From: Richard Atkins Date: 15 Oct 04 - 08:55 PM The Gather was Brill. Great Singing and what relaxed together Gather It was.
