It was a wonderful session run by MGAS in the Globe Room at the Reindeer yesterday afternoon, and did indeed, as hoped, run seamlessly into Snuffy's evening singaround. The use of an inflatable plastic cat as an MBS-twig substitute, and ritual deflating at closing time, were also inspired. (Luckily, no-one tried to deflate the real moggy that was mooching around the Globe Room.)

Thanks Hil, and thanks to Merek'Dary for programming it. (The rest of the festival was pretty good too!)

Indeed, a great session, with lots of high points, smoothly and expertly run by MGAS. It also has to be said that the 'Catters own discipline and generosity towards each other (and I am not only talking about the Quality Street) was exemplary. Would that other "normal" sessions throughout the year around the country were all so well managed and behaved!

This just HAS to become a permanent feature of future Banbury fests...

What a great afternoon i had at the gathering even after the bicycle rack syndrome from the night. Well done MGAS and to Merek and dary to help organise the gathering.

A really enjoyable festival, one of the highlights for me was the Mudgathering. great singing, great people. I'll echo the the comments above ~ truly friendly generous people. Good to meet more of you.

Well done Hils, you did a good job ~ hope the cold & the nose are improving.

All credit to Derek & Mary too, Banbury goes from strength to strength ~ & Yes! Banbury must have Mudgathering next year.

I'm just so glad that Merek'n'Dary programmed the MudGather into Banbury festival. Meeting fellow Catters is always a high point of Festivals & this gather gave us a chance for a really good get-together!!

The Meet itself & the Sing virtually ran themselves after a bit of organisation & the Blow-Up Cat. So glad that I had the winning ticket for the Quality Street in the raffle the night before & wasn't it strange that we managed to get right the way to the bottom of the tin *grin*

Wonderful fellowship, singing & fantastic songs (some very emotional) - Yes, we MUST do this again.....

Will post the final list on the original thread (tomorrow probably) as it'll conclude the epic story of the Banbury MudGather 2004. Apart from all the Fab photos that I hope people will send in to Jeff for the Events section!

Just managed to crank up the steam-driven computer again, having returned after a fantastic weekend at M&D's wonderful festival - saw this thread (already! - well what else would I expect from Catters?!)....
so I must post, add my pennorth and echo loudly what's been said above ie the Gather was great, a weekend highlight definitely and everything a good session and sing should be. Excellent singing, fine songs, separate room, great acoustics, tremendous (underline that) atmosphere, welcomingly smoke-free, lovely friendly Catters. Well well done everyone, specially Guru, and Hils do get weller soon, we cant afford to lose that super voice of yours now can we?
Sorry i missed the rollcall bit near the end of the afternoon - it came at that crucial point in the daily body-cycle where flagging necessitated feeding! i'll put that right next time - but at least i've put a few more names to voices/faces now.
Yes, let's make the Gather a feature of future Banburies (is that a real word?) - and like you Morticia i'm getting ready for Bedworth already, see you there!

A truly wonderful occasion, Hil. And it must become a regular feature of Banbury (and other festivals too perhaps)

Sorry that I too seem to have missed the rollcall bit near the end of the afternoon. Was that when we poor Shellbacks were shanghaied away to t'Mill? There were quite a few Catters there that I'd never met before.

As a singer I'm not complaining, but there were very few instruments in evidence, even as accompaniment. Were there no instrumentalist Catters at Banbury this weekend, or did you feel uncomfortable with so many singers around?

Yes Snuffy, we had a roll-call while all the Shellbacks were missing which was a bit of a shame!! Should have thought of it earlier *smack*

I too wondered about the lack of instrumentalists. I'd hoped to hear Ian MacFlute, but he put his instrument away & skipped his turn. Is it the case that there are more Catters who are interested in song than music?

Certainly there were Catters who didn't manage to get into the Gather who joined in a more music-oriented session in the back bar of the Reindeer. It would have been marvellous to combine the two had space been available.

Linael - you're not actually a gate-crasher you know!!!

Just put the list on the other thread & counted up - there were 66 Catters (including a few GUESTs) who either got in to the Gather room or made good use of a session in the back bar!

There were definitely 10 other Catters at the festival & I've just noticed marion.h on this thread who I've missed already so that makes 11 at least....

We UK Catters see a lot of each other anyway, Mario. There are usually at least 20 Catters at most UK festivals, but Banbury's Mudgather was the first (and hopefully not the last) to be actually programmed by Festival Organisers. A most welcome development.

England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Eire, and the occupied territories surrounding the Humber (especially the latter) have been a considerable "presence" on Mudcat for a long while MMario, as I thought you would have noticed. One of the reasons that we seem to throw rather a lot of insults at each other, is the fact that we do meet up frequently and often tend to know each quite well - this seems to cause some surprise and consternation on your side of the pond.

At least 20 Catters - well, that's just the Shellbacks for a start? And there's quite a big overlap of Catters with Sidmouth Middle Bar Singers - Banbury was a good place for the Mudcat Gather (as would Bedworth be) because it's in the Midlands. I saw Catters I know from Sidmouth (south west England), and Catters I know from Whitby (north east England), and from several festivals in between!

Thanks for a lovely session on Sat. It was good to put faces to names, and hear some wonderful songs and singers.
I have sung fairly infrequently in the last 20 years, and it gets harder all the time to get the courage, so I intended just listening. The atmosphere and great chorus singing made it easy to sing, though, so, I thank you, and hope to get to more gathers. ( Can't make Bedworth this year, unfortunately.)

I sadly too missed the rollcall, though I did hear about it Sunday night in the pub from a bemused Non catter who'd wandered in to "A song session" & thought we should of been "getting on with the B---y singing" ggl.

The Gather was Brill. Great Singing and what relaxed together Gather It was. Guru Is off to Venice on Sunday,not been berore. Any Catters info welcome. Merek and Dairy may be back by then but a small Gather on a Gondoler would stop Guru singing about ICE CREAM!
