Subject: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Mary Katherine Date: 15 Oct 04 - 05:42 PM Just found this on another forum: Subject: Bobby Eaglesham From: Dick Gaughan dickg@dickalba.demon.co.uk Date: 10/15/2004 12:54 PM Pacific Standard Time I don't have any details yet but it seems Bob died suddenly yesterday of a heart attack. In recent years he'd been teaching art and music to young offenders and doing a few gigs around the place. He was one of my longest and most cherished friends; we'd been close for almost 40 years, had sung together in various combinations in that time, best known probably being our 3.5 years together in Five Hand Reel. If anyone knows how to contact any of the other 5HR members, could they let me know? I used to have email addresses for Tom and Barry but lost them in a computer crash a while ago. -- DG |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: cumbrian Date: 15 Oct 04 - 07:41 PM This is very sad news. I remember playing support for Bobby back when I was around 16 and just kicking off into what has been a long professional involvement in music. He was very gracious and encouraging to this young upstart who thought he knew everything, but knew nothing. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: akenaton Date: 15 Oct 04 - 07:43 PM Mary ....Thanks for that Shocked to hear of Bobby,a real enthusiast and a great human being Ake |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Phil Cooper Date: 15 Oct 04 - 07:49 PM What a loss. I loved the way he sang Ae Fond Kiss with Five Hand Reel. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Jim I Date: 15 Oct 04 - 09:41 PM Haven't seen Bobby for years but he was a real gentleman and a lovely guy and will be sadly missed. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 16 Oct 04 - 03:14 PM I'm saddened to hear that. Bobby was a top class singer, one of the very finest. I had the great pleasure of speaking with him three times in recent years: very unassuming and humorous with it. Funny thing is: I was in Edinburgh today (where Bobby lived), in the King's Wark pub for lunch. My daughter's boyfriend, a musician, told me that he had played at the Royal Oak a few times. The first thing I asked him was "Do you know Bobby Eaglesham"? Then I get home to discover this on Mudcat. A great man and a very sad loss. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Dave Sutherland Date: 16 Oct 04 - 05:57 PM Very sad indeed, I met Bobby several times and always enjoyed his company. Nobody could sing a sad song like Bobby. RIP. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Terry K Date: 17 Oct 04 - 06:06 AM It's always amazed me that Five Hand Reel were never updated to CD whereas literally tons of lesser stuff has been reissued. Great band. TK |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Boab Date: 18 Oct 04 - 04:28 AM Shock news. Bobby was a great performer, and a real asset to Five Hand Reel. His passing makes my possession of my one cassette all the more precious. The guy who played fiddle with the band ---Dave Turrock [?] ---was at one time a plumber in Ayr, but I don't know if he's still around. Last time I saw Dave we shared a gig at Kilmaurs Historical Society, but that must be close on twenty years back. I'll pass the info to Dick, in case he wants to trace him... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Boab Date: 18 Oct 04 - 04:30 AM My memory may be playing tricks---but didn't Bobby have a berth with a band called Magic Lantern, 'way back? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tam the Bam (Nutter) Date: 18 Oct 04 - 07:02 AM I saw bobby Eaglesham at the Irvine folk club it just the once and I really enjoyed him, he was accompanyed by the shy fiddle player Chuck Fleming, he doesn't say a word when he's on stage. But it is sad that he's dead, he'll be palying in the old folk club in the sky. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 18 Oct 04 - 12:38 PM He was indeed a lovely guy - all the other adjectives have already been used in this thread . God bless ya Bobby |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Nerd Date: 18 Oct 04 - 02:19 PM And what a voice! One for the ages. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Oct 04 - 07:17 PM I've got a CD with him and Chuck Fleming called "The Live Set" (1997)which includes Ae Fond Kiss. Bought it when they came to Balerno Folk Club a few years ago now (an excellent night): time for a replay. Any relation to Stuart Eaglesham of Wolfstone? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Boab Date: 19 Oct 04 - 01:19 AM I've been mulling over the Five Hand Reel fiddler's name ---I'm thinking now Davie Tulloch ---anybody remember? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:23 AM The fiddler was Tom Hickland (from Belfast). Dave Tulloch was also in the band, drummer or bassist? In addition to Dick Gaughan (until 1978) Bobby, Dave and Tom, was also Barry Lyons. I agree it's surprising that FHR are not on CD. I contacted the record company a couple of years ago and they said "no plans at present". Shame, cos they were a great band. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 19 Oct 04 - 04:26 AM Oh and Sam Bracken too. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Dave Sutherland Date: 19 Oct 04 - 06:16 AM Dave Tulloch was the drummer, Sam Bracken (where are you now?)replaced Dick Gaughan around 1979 |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: MoorleyMan Date: 19 Oct 04 - 06:59 AM I too was shocked to return from the weekend to find this sad news here on the Cat. It seems but recently that I saw Bobby perform with Chuck at a club gig, just the two of them, but a fab night. As a point of info, interestingly, FHR's self-titled album (on the Black Crow label) is now available on CD (from guess who!)- but as far as I know that's the only one. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: mooman Date: 19 Oct 04 - 07:04 AM This is a big shock. I loved his work with 5 Hand Reel. Another sad loss. Condolences to his family and may he R.I.P. Peace moo |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,aiberdeen Date: 19 Oct 04 - 08:15 AM Sorry to hear this sad news. Bobby was always one of the true gentlemen of the Scottish folk scene, and a fine performer. Point of information. There were 2 Davy Tulloch's. The DT who was a plumber in Ayr was fiddler Davy Tulloch from Shetland. He made an excellent recording of Shetland music with Tom Anderson, Aly Bain & Trevor Hunter, but never had any thing to do with 5 Hand Reel. He too, sadly died at an early age a few years ago. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Susanne (skw) Date: 19 Oct 04 - 03:52 PM Sad news indeed for the Scottish folk scene. I never heard Bobby other than on a 5 Hand Reel album and in one track recorded at a German folk festival, but his voice certainly was something. Tattie Bogle - he wasn't related to Stuart and Struan Eaglesham, according to Iain MacKintosh who knows the twins well and once was the other half of Bobby's band The Other Half. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tattie Bogle Date: 19 Oct 04 - 07:14 PM Thanks for the info Suzanne. Played the CD in the car today (Bobby and Chuck - The Live Set) and it was just magic. Ae Fond Kiss 2nd to none! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: akenaton Date: 19 Oct 04 - 07:38 PM Tim ..Did Bobby have a brother John who wrote and sang with the "Clutha"....Ake |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Murray MacLeod Date: 19 Oct 04 - 08:41 PM Funeral service for Bobby will be held at Mortonhall Crematorium, Edinburgh, this Thursday (22nd Oct) at 10.00 am. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 20 Oct 04 - 03:48 AM No Ake, he wasn't related to John Eaglesham of the Clutha (whom I had a few drinks with last Tuesday at the funeral of another old Glasgow folkie, Alec Gormlie). Dick Gaughan has said that people often couldn't tell whether it was him or Bobby who was singing certain tracks on FHR albums: that's quite a compliment. Re FHR on CD, anyone got details? Tower Records told me a few years ago that a CD was available, I ordered it, but word came back that it wasn't available after all. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Oct 04 - 08:07 AM Having played CD (The Live Set)again, I would agree that there is more than a passing resemblance between Bobby's and Dick's voices - and style of singing. TB |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Ballyholme Date: 23 Oct 04 - 09:52 AM DaveS, Sam Bracken still lives in the Lake District and plays and tours with his wife Elaine (singer and flute player). They released a CD (Once More Around the Block) earlier this year on which they reprised a couple of FHR songs - Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore and P Stands For Paddy. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 23 Oct 04 - 02:35 PM Tattie; how did you get that CD? (Hi Ballyholme). |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 04 - 06:11 PM How? |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Ballyholme Date: 24 Oct 04 - 11:56 AM Just found Bobby's Weather The Storm album amongst my old vinyl. Ex-FHR personnel who appear on it are Dick Gaughan, Sam Bracken and Dave Tullock. Got to get the old turntable wired up to listen to it this week. (Hi Big Tim). |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Steve Roberts Date: 28 Oct 04 - 05:39 PM Still cant believe the sad news. Bobby will be long missed by all of us here in the lake distict where he lived and performed for so long. Lovely guy and a wonderful singer. R.I.P |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Fiona Date: 29 Oct 04 - 04:37 AM What sad news, one of the best voices I've ever heard. re 5 Hand Reel on cd, I found a copy of this on the music stall at Celtic Conections earlier this year. It's on Black Crow records. We were lucky enough to see Dick Gaughan in May and I asked him if any of the others would be available on cd and he that one was more or less a bootleg. He said he was happy it was available though. Fiona |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 29 Oct 04 - 09:54 AM Thanks Fiona. Would it be too much trouble to give us the CD tracklist? (I have 4 FHR albums on cassette, I think that's the lot, and a tape of an early solo album of Bobby's, which includes, "Try Again", "Empty Chairs", "The Island Queen", "I Will Go", "Jock O' Hazeldean"). I'm going to play it tonight. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Fiona Date: 29 Oct 04 - 12:25 PM No trouble at all Tim, It's the same as the album, Both Sides Of The Forth Death Of Argyll Kempy's Hat The Knight And The Shepherd's Daughter Sliave Gallion Braes Wee Wee German Lairdie The Maid Of Listowel When A Man's In Love Frankie's Dog I was very pleased to get it, having never had the LP. The phone no on the cd for Black Crow is 01423 888979. 'For A' That' is supposed to be coming out from them next year, fingers crossed. Fiona |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Big Tim Date: 29 Oct 04 - 02:40 PM Thanks Fiona, somehow I had got it into my daft head that the CD was a compilation one. (I've got that one on cassette, tho I seldom play it, in case it gets swallowed up or something). Hope their version of "Bratach Bana" is on the next CD: beautiful stuff, played loud, driving around Argyll. Thanks again. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Paul from Hull Date: 30 Oct 04 - 02:41 PM Sad.... Got into 5 Hand Reel fairly early after developing a taste in Folk, & kept that interest (of course) throughout. Been looking out for them on C.D. & its disappointing to know they are not to be had. If some good can come out of losing a fine performer before his time, lets hope its some C.D. releases that will hopefully profit those who stand to benefit. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Boab Date: 31 Oct 04 - 02:37 AM Guest aiberdeen---how in the heck I got lines crossed with two Davy Tullochs I cannae fathom! All I know is that the Davy Tulloch with whom I shared a gig in Kilmaurs I recognised as Davy who played fiddle in Hexham folk club as a member of a group which for some reason I was sure was one which contained Dick Gaughan and Bobby Eaglesham. And now you tell me Davy's gone too, some years ago; the world goes on, albeit a smidgin poorer.... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tattie Bogle Date: 01 Nov 04 - 05:41 PM CD "The live Set" - got it when Bobby and Chck Fleming came to Balerno Folk Club some years ago. There's a contact phone number for Chuck on the sleeve and it was engineered by Jed Boyle at Northern Recordings in Consett, Co Durham. Track listing: Speed at the sound of Loneliness |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: Tattie Bogle Date: 01 Nov 04 - 05:45 PM Sorry - hit wrong button there! To continue................... Hoghton pipers/The fidget The jute mill song Lady take your time The setting sun Deep Elm Blues Tune for Carolan/The shop street jig Carrickfergus The Oak/Sandra's reel Ae Fond Kiss Dr Murray's/The swagger Delia's gone Don't know if they made any more Cds together: this one' described as CD001! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Chris B (born Again Scouser) Date: 06 Nov 04 - 02:44 PM I was really sad to hear that Bobby had died. I only really knew of him through Five Hand Reel. For a couple of years they were virtually residents at the Half Moon in Putney. When me and my mates were around 18 or 19, Friday night was Five Hand night. 6 or 7 of us, none of us sweaties, pissed as rats bellowing 'I Will Go' down the Lower Richmond Road at half past eleven. Dancing in the pissing rain in Lancashire at the July Wakes Festival in Chorley. Trading insults with punks from Guildford outside the Nashville in West Kensington. Wondering where the hell everyone had gone at Kingston Poly. Chatting up Danish birds at Cambridge. Happy days. Thanks, mate. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Debbie Date: 30 Jan 06 - 06:39 PM Another regular from the Half Moon!Just read this thread and cried. Many happy memories of Bobby and FHR. Sold merchandise on their tours. Was very fond of Bobby -sadly, sadly missed. Never forgotten. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Bobby Eaglesham RIP From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) Date: 06 Feb 06 - 06:12 AM Hi Debbie. We probably met during those days. Do you remember Bridget from Denmark?..... |
