From: George Papavgeris Date: 18 Oct 04 - 07:48 AM I thought I'd start a general thread on this for people to dip in as they return home (Bobert, I know you started a "personal" thread on the Getaway, leading to a more focused discussion on the madness necessary to enjoy the event...). Got home just 2 hours ago; and I knew before I left Ramblewood that it would feel very different posting in Mudcat now that I have linked faces to so many of the names. But there was so much more to the Getaway for me. Meeting Alaska Mike has to be at the top of my impressions. The guy writes some wonderful songs, some of which I will certainly steal and seed the local folk scene with; and he delivers them with such style and great voice! But best of all, he's a smashing bloke with whose approach and attitude I immediately fell in love. What a heart. More than an acquaintance, much more I hope... And Big Mick too; and Jeri, and SINSULL, and Tinker, and Kendall, and KT, and Joe Offer, and Bobert, Nancy King, Ken and Dan Schatz, Ed Trickett, Gorgeous Gary, BillD... oh, bugger it, if I start this way I'm bound to forget someone and it would be unfair. Meeting any one of you alone would have been worth the trip. And it was lovely too seeing again AllanC, Micca and JacquiM(ex-C) of course! Flashbacks, in no order: Alaska Mike singing "I am a rock" at a workshop on Sunday Elizabeth LaPrelle's voice at the singaround late Friday night The wedding reception. Kendall's rendering of a song from his early "country schmaltz" years Sunday morning, to Jacqui, Alaska Mike, KT and myself. Kendall's generosity not only in lending his Appollo 12-string but also with comments. Jacqui's happy face. Now there's a proud lady, and rightly so. KT getting up to sing at the Saturday concert Tinker singing "Bob" at 3am Saturday in cabins 11-14 Joe Offer's songs (and general behaviour!) during that same session KT crying at "By and by". Twice. And singing at the back of the Dining Hall. The "Harmony Sluts" bobbing up and down and damn near taking over the Saturday concert (but we loved it Mike, didn't we?) Those few minutes talking with Big Mick in front of our cabin Sunday morning. And a few minutes later, Ed Trickett coming to shake my hand and offer praise. Nancy King's and Bobert's helpfulness and easy manner (apologies Bobert for causing that snoring sound to emanate from the passenger seat at the last leg of the trip!) Everyone's open and smiling faces. Above all, in the middle of the song-swapping and harmonising and in between the little chats you get to glimpse at the people behind the names. And Mike, Mick, Cathy, Nancy, Robert, Kendall, Charlie, Mary, Dan, Ken, Jeri, Tinker, Ed, Dani, Leo and so many others - I liked what I saw. THANK YOU all |

It was great to meet you at last, and hear your beautiful songs (love the CD -- hope to obtain the others before too long...). Bobert is at least partly right, of course -- it does take a certain amount of craziness to do this, but then, all the best people are a little bit crazy! After all, who but El Greko would have a gig on Thursday night, fly across the pond for a sleep-deprived weekend, then fly back to do a Monday night gig? And yes, it WAS cold. Even Alaska Mike finally put on a jacket over his T-shirt, and (dare I reveal it?) socks with his sandals! But we survived, most of us. There were even a few moments when sitting in the sun that I peeled down to only three layers! As for not taking showers, well, I figured I hadn't sweated much anyway. I don't have much time here at work, and I'm still pretty bleary-eyed, so will probably post more later, but for now I just want to let everybody know that Kendall and Jacqui are totally fabulous together, and the wedding party was great! Tinker and SINSULL did a magnificent job, complete with champagne punch, cute little favors, and lots of love. Lots of good songs, too! The Sunday-night-stayover crowd will begin checking in before too long, I'm sure, though they're probably even more bleary than I am. More later -- Nancy |

I am now home, warm in t-shirt again, and smashing at full speed back in to real life. Shit for the birds, as my grandfather used to say. But what a(nother) magical weekend! There are so many impressions I can't even filter them through, yet. Some impressions on folks newly met: Now that Jacqui has taken over the Hospitality Management Programs at Kendall, we are looking elsewhere for available hearthrobs. El Greko seems a likely candidate to take over the throne, but there are other strong contenders, and a thing like this is just not decided overnight. El Greko's magical songwriting is equalled only by his charming and heart-felt singing. Twice he brought me to poignant tears. And I only heard him DO two songs! Jacqui, I can report, is worthy of our Kendall. She is a real sweety, and has made him very happy. The improvement is measurable, and not just by the amount of time spent in liplock. Bobert is a trip, guys. Not one whit different from my (and perhaps your)online impression, except now I can hear his music as well! Once the devil let go of his guitar, he pulled a terrific gospel song out of it on Sunday morning. He's gettin' right... MTed was too briefly met, but I look forward to another day. Thanks for getting that jam started. It took some guts, and sounded great from THIS side of the circle! KT is lovely. Her singing, her songs, her spirit, her hugs, (don't read this, KT, I'm going to embarrass you) remind me of a wonderful bird, alighting briefly to make you smile, make you feel good, and then scoot along elsewhere. She is curious, talented, effervescent. I so enjoyed meeting her! The usual suspects were as suspect as usual, and it was so very good to see, and sing with, you all. Thank you for the hugs, and the songs. They are in my back pocket for use as needed throughout the year. Deep, deep heart-thanks to all the FSGW folks for working so hard to make this a good time for all. And thank you, Max, for creating this place that has played a part in changing so many lives for the better, including mine. When you get over yourself, pat yourself on the back again. More later... Incredible talent and lots of support for those of us who don't exactly belong in that category! FUN! Listening to the string section backing up singers in the Sunday night TV room song circle. Falling asleep to the sound of David's harp. Not falling asleep to the arrythmic tones of three people snoring out of sync. Walking down to the dining hall deck to find Ed Tricket singing "On a Day Like Today", listening to Max, Bobert and Roger in the Blues jam. Becoming a convert to the "Gospel of Skiffle According to Max!" He had it there in writing---it doesn't have to SOUND good, it just has to FEEL good. (At one point Micca turned and said to me, "You'd play a kazoo to ANY tune, wouldn't you!?" (blame Max, Micca) Well---there was plenty of good sound and good feeling. Finding out Bobert doesn't look at all like an old geezer, just looks like an old hippie! The wedding reception and the glow on Jackie and Kendall's faces. The sing-arounds, the choruses, the performances. The making and renewing of friendships. The absolute respect everyone has for everyone else's joy in the music. Too many remarkable songwriters, singers, instrumentalists to name-- And really way too much magic to convey--you shoulda been there! Janie |

Right now I am unpacking & exhausted..(those of us who stay till late Monday morning get even less sleep than some others!!!) But it was good...(I even had a good place to be when the thunder & lightning and rain let loose Saturday...because when it stopped we got a full, beautiful rainbow....and there are pics of that too!) So off to get a wee bit of sleep and then download pics from the camera and get to the task of making them available... |

Meanwhile, I'm still marginally funcational from the lack of sleep and great music and memories buzzing around in my head, and am afraid to post much in my semi-coherent state. The weather was so cold that when somebody left, you HAD to hug them--it was an excuse to share body heat. But it was quite confusing--just because somebody had a coat on didn't mean they were leaving. Next year, we're ordering warmer weather for the weekend. First, I somehow had Tinker and Sinsull as gettin' married at the Getaway which, fir most everyone else but this poor ol' hillbilly, was rediculous. Then I thought that Kendall and Jacqui were going to get amrried at the Getaway which again was wrong as they were allready married. See how fun lexdexia can be? Well, okay. Let me say that fir someone who has such Mudact powers as to make entire thoughts disappear, Max is okay in my book. Yeah, he may be a youngin' but a youngin' way beyond his years. He also plays some fine acoustic blues. Nice to know ya an' I don't really give a danged about having no eraser powers 'cause 'bout the only stuff I read here in the Catbox that I'd erase is stuff that Iz postercated my ownseff... Now, I don't want to hurt no ones feelings and this ain't gonna get posted unner no " Yer Favorite Mudcatters" thread but I was so happy to meet Ebbie who on many occasions when the Bobert has climbed up the tree, climbed out on a limb and has begun tryingt to saw the limb off, has come to my rescue or at least spread out some straw in the fall zone... So nice to finally meet ya.... But, hey, it was great meetin' each and everyone of you folks. Yeah, okay, I thought that Jeri was gonna grab me and duck tape me to something nasty but we got beyond that. Oh, Joe Offer ain't like 7 feet tall. I know it's hard to believe but he ain't even 6'5"... But heck of a nice guy. And MTed? Whew! Brings new meaning to single chord jams... Something ain't right with the boy, but in a good way.... Know what I mean? And thanks BillD fir the beautiful laithed woodwork piece. Knowing it came from one of my old tree roots makes it extra special and it allready has found a spot of prominence. Man, I'm just gettin started... KT? Wow! The gal is the Emmy Lou Harris of the Mudcat. Not only does she sing beatifully but she is drop dead foxy, to boot. Thanks Chance and Suzette for attending my blues workshop and loved seeing and hearin' you all. You guys have the magic. No two ways about it. Micca is jus' a most farout person one could ever sit accrosss the table from... Roger from Baltimore. Good to meet ya and better yto find that there *are* other real bluesman here. I was wonderin'... Allen C and his lady... Real nice talkin' wid ya and meetin' ya. And nice beard. Speakin of which, where'd beardedbruce go after the "muse" thing"? I don't think I say him again the e3ntire weekend. Alaska Mike is my kinda guy. He look more like I thought Big Mick would look like 'cause, well, he is *big* and tall and has a voice that can probably bust up cinder blocks. You kinda feel secure around Alaska Mike. He's the kinda guy who everyone would like as a next door neighbor for those times when the baby grand piano needed to be moved again... Back to Big Mick. Well, you ain't so big, yuor're just atll that's all... No, actually Big Mick ain't even that tall? But he plays guitar in a big way... And hes a nice guy, dangit. I thought he was gopnna jump on mw fir my Green leanings but he was nuthin' but gracious... Speakin' of green, Janie and Lynn and I had some good times talkin' gardenin'... I reckon, next to Ebbie, the person I most wanted to meet was the Captain Hiseff, Kendall, and I certainly enjoyed spending some time wid him. He is bigger than life and tells a story the way that one a very select few can do. And I really enjoyed the new Mrs Kendall. She is so sweet. (Now, Captain. You treat her right 'er she's gonna show you a new use fir that $8 harpoon you bought at the yard sale...Get my drift here?...) And Mr Greco, as in El... So nice to meet you and you even snore on key... Jus' funnin'... But look out! Now that Kendall is corralled it looks like the womenz is turning their attention in yer direction. Now I'll be back here later as more memories surface... My mind is a lot like a juke box and we;ve jus' played N-3... Yeah, Amos... I stayed through lunch- I did not want to miss Elizabeth LaPrelle, even if it did cut out my sleeping time for the weekend. But it was good to meet those I was able to catch. I just love you guys. Every year I get to meet a few new friends too which is great. The talent at any given Getaway is always astounding. Truly intimidating. Thanks to the FSGW once again for having us. So since we've been practicing now for several years, I'll announce it now: The 2005 Getaway is going to be something special. I'm going to work all year to recruit Mudcatters to make this the biggest and best Getaway ever. We're going to create a network of helpers to give rides and raise money for travel expenses, and we may even forcibly kidnap a couple folks. If you've put it off in the past for this reason or that, 2005 is the year to get off your duff, lay down your excuses and do it, do it, do it. Actually seeing a bunch nutty Mudcatters seems to make it all make sense for a whole year. I think more of you should experience that. So everyone who reads this thread, you have a year to recruit and make happen, the best Getaway ever. |

I thought I was gonna enjoy El Greko because of all the stuff the UK folks said about him. I don't think their comments were all that accurate. He wasn't as good as they led me to believe. He was WAY better than that! I listened to him and Elizabeth LaPrelle all the way home. I was good to meet Bobert, and hear him sing. I got a couple of your plants, and just have to figure out where they're going. Thanks for bringing them. I finally met M. Ted, and it was a pleasure. I'd asked Mick to do a certain song at the Sunday night concert. Right before it, he said "I hope you don't mind, but I'm not gonna do that song." The reason was because M. Ted had handed him some lyrics to look at, and Mick just HAD to do it. It was certainly the right decision. GREAT song! Lotsa other stuff, but I have to check a couple of threads and e-mail and then pass out. By the way, y'all notice how not one person has mentioned me? I figure the stump got me my 15 minutes of fame. Maybe next year, I can drive into the swimming pool. |

I have been tellin' these layabouts for 5 years that they need to start saving there pennies, and making plans now for the following year. So I am right there with you. You have not lived until you attended one of these events. And I hear that some Shellbacks may come back next year. Great, just what I need. A bunch of Brits tellin' a poor Irish lad how to get cars off stumps and such. Some shit never changes!! and BTW, I gave that big lad a down home, Yankee doodle, going to Jaysus, buttwhuppin' in the joke contest. The "Duck Hunting Dog" put the coup de grace on his unwrinkled ass, as opposed to Kendall's wrinkled old ass. This event is a must do, my friends. The spirit of community is woven throughout the event. The FSGW, and its members, are hosts of the first order. I don't mind telling you that many of these folks have become beloved friends. M. Ted, your song is a masterpiece and reveals your soul. It takes a great deal of courage to show this side of oneself. I am so honored that you allowed me to be the first to perform. This years new 'Catters were KT and Ebbie, and they were stunning in what they added to the event. Rather than mention all the others who were there (you know who you are), I am going to just say that the rest of you need to make this event. You will never forget it or regret. All the best, Mick |

Sandy LaPrelle says it's great for sore throats if you add hot water. Of course, ANYTHING in hot water was welcome this weekend, given how cold it was. MTed, lines from your song (the one Mick sang in the concert) echoed in my mind all the way home. A fine song. Every year I think "Suppose this year it's a flop?" This year I was especially paranoid because so many people were coming huge distances to check out the Getaway for the first time. Well I walked in the door Friday night, there were Alaska Mike, Big Mick, and I think MMario and Dick Rodgers, just standing and talking, and my heart gave a leap of joy. Really, it did, I had to net it & put it back where it belongs. Anyway I felt a great surge of happiness at seeing those people again and realizing how far they had come to be here (except Dick, who lives here and ALWAYS comes to the Getaway), and how much it meant to see them, and how magical this event and this bunch of people are. And then Joe Offer -- and also someone else later, Mick maybe? -- said to me, "I feel like I'm home." Yes. Of all the late night music, the thing that stands out in my mind was not a huge jam or any such thing. It was Pauline Lerner and Susan A-R playing fiddle tunes together in the dining room Friday night. Sweet lovely music, played just for their own enjoyment. Kind of the essence of the Getaway atmosphere for me. Other memories: Saul Broudy's harmonica playing in the Sunday concert. Ed Trickett's version of the Golden Vanity in the Saturday ballads, with a fine chorus that filled the room. Dani, Janie and Allan C singing a rousing gospel song in the Sunday concert. (My brain is so fried that I can't remember the name of the song they sang! Somebody help me?) Big Mick singing MTed's song in the Sunday concert. Karen Kobela's voice in the Saturday concert. Going back to my room & sleeping through the first half of the Saturday concert. :-) The look on Kendall's face while Jacqui sang "Love Me Tender" for him. The dazed look on his face while friend after friend sang their love and good wishes for him and Jacqui. Spending time chatting with Jacqui. Likewise with KT and Ebbie. Barry Schlesinger's hilarious "French Canadian" song in the Frozen North workshop. Barry, what's the name of that song? It's wicked. I love it! Micca's wonderful, funny song about how his grandfather survived WWI. There were a lot of non-Mudcatters whose presence was special to me this year because we don't get to see them every year. Like Dick and Corinne, who live in Oregon City when they're not on sabbatical in Galway, Ireland. They have been commuting to the Getaway about every second year, since they moved to Oregon i-dont-know-howmany-years ago. (They pleaded jet lag as their excuse for not leading any workshops this year.) I think Dick is the man who taught Bill "The Key of R." I forgive him though. And Dick Greenhaus' son Charlie who came just for a day, with his fiancee' Jeannette. Years ago Charlie was a Getaway regular and I have so many memories and images of our conversations of yesteryear. At one time Charlie was a professional juggler, and he did a show for us one night at Camp Letts, juggling fire batons. Incredible. The Getaway is just magical. I don't know why or how it happens that way. We work hard, but we don't bring the magic. You do. It is a heart-stopper, and very important for people to hear. Will you share it? Mick, I thought your delivery was right on. Another favorite moment: At a certain point I felt so overwhelmed, I told someone it's like drinking from a firehose for someone who doesn't have much music in 'real' life. I walked up the big quiet hill for some silence, and heard waltz strains from the gym. Now, not being a dancer or the player of anything BUT the kazoo, I hadn't paid attention to that on the schedule, but when I went in and heard the music, I just melted. Laid down on a bench in the corner, and drifted along with the most beautiful music I think I've ever heard. Fiddles, bass, harp, piano, concertina, and dancing feet gliding in, out and around. The harp is simply an extension of this man's soul. Because Ed Trickett was there I sang the song that caused him to give me "Along the Famine Road". The title is "Far From There Home". I was accompanied by the Viol, a fiddle, and the harp. I was lost in the beauty of those instruments. So many musical moments that it is hard to focus on one or two. Surely the trio of Dani, Janie, and Allan had to be one of the highlights of the night. Dani mislead you all when she said she doesn't have an instrument. Hers is her voice, and the charm she exudes when she sings. Dani, my dear, you bring joy when you sing. People smile and feel good. And when it is with Janie, the love of friendship just fills the air. I wish you could see it from where I sit. Janie .... man, I just love hearing her sing. Janie has a rich voice that just warms you. And when she is in a room when the music is jumping, she "clogs" all over the place. The music grabs her, and the joy in her just makes her move. Another joyous thing, that I wish she could sit where I sit and see. My friend KT was no surprise to me. We have corresponded for a while, and I have a tape of her songs. I have been after her for several years to come down to Getaway, and I am overjoyed she did. The beauty of her lyrics, and her voice should be experienced by everyone. I am so proud of our friendship, and it was only deepened by our time together. Ebbie .... is so damn cute, and so funny .... that one almost could miss the depth of her talent if they aren't looking. She charms you, and you are drawn irresistably to her. And the friendship between her and KT is palpable. She was one of the highlights for me, and is a welcome addition to the circle of "old friends just met". Surely Kendall and Jacqui were the highlight of the weekend. Our English Rose is a charmer, and cute as can be. The love she feels for Kendall is potent and infectious. And his for her is the same. Kendall and Jacqui, your spirit and love was felt by everyone at the gathering. It made us joyous and happy, and we are in your debt for sharing it with us. May you have such joy all the days of your lives. Thanks a million to the FSGW for making me an invited Guest. It is a high honor for me to have been so. I so appreciate the amount of planning, and execution, that go into this thing. By the way, if you haven't got every CD that Ed Trickett has made, you do not have a complete library. His is "must own" music. One last thing. I have spent most of my folk singing life being in love with the music of Jean Ritchie. When I read her book, I then also loved her spirit. And when she corresponds with me, I love the friendship. I have always said that when her work here is done, we will not see another like her. This weekend I was privileged to hear Elisabeth LaPrelle sing again. And it comes to me that the tradition, to the standards set by our beloved Jean, is safe in this young woman's hands. She is a gift from the Creator, and our job is too encourage her, and help her along the way. Folks, one day you will say that you heard her sing when she was young and just starting out. (This is the proper wimp-out route.) Aw, hell...KT should have brought some of her CDs to sell. Her songs and herself were sunlight on a cloudy day or a warm fire in the deep, dark winter. I enjoyed meeting Ebbie, and I wish I'd heard her sing. Rumor has it that she did sing on Saturday night, after I'd wandered off to the cabin jam. Bobert and I didn't beat each other up, and I enjoyed meeting him. I wish I could have stayed for his blues guitar workshop, and I wish I could have jammed with him at some point. (Aside to Bobert: Saturday night when I wandered home to the cabin and said I didn't think anyone was playing up there, there was a full blown jam/song circle/insanity session going on that lasted until 4 AM. They were singing doo-wop when I walked in. Your sleeping bag was calling you though.) As it happened, I only got the guitar out once, and it was to go play by myself on a bench. Annie, I missed you. I kept wanting to ask Janie if you were coming, then I wanted to ask "what happened to Annie?" but I kept being distracted. I missed some other folks who usually come to the Getaway too: Annamill and hubby Glenn who probably didn't freeze the whole weekend because they were in sunny California; Gail, of the English Music Hall songs and reading of the lyrics by finger-tip; the whole Missing Person Soup Kitchen Gospel Quartet (am I close with the name?). About M. Ted's song: I knew he was going somewhere from the beginning, but I had to think all the way through to see where. In the final verse, everything came together and his point was clear to me, but he never told folks what they should be thinking and feeling. (Something I'm frequently guilty of. People can figure stuff out without being told.) Finesse and subtlety. It made me cry, because of the combination of what it said, how Mick performed it, and because of how well it was written. If someone had asked why I had tears in my eyes, I might not have known how to explain. |

I find my self pausing at the keyboard as it faintlly begins to sink in that the weekend has truely ended. The memory circling strongest is of Max in the Blues circle. I had handed him a chord progression to accompany me to one of those wonderful old off color blues and when it was over he looked across the circle and asked about the progression after explaining how it was built and naming a couple of other songs it was found in... explaining it's connection to a classical piece... and he was eagerly waiting for more information than he already had.... when it was clear that the answer was not in the circle there was a silent moment before we moved on.... I know I wasn't the only one wondering what Fielding would have said.... But then there is the video footage of Joe Offer doing high kicks to Alaska Mike's questionably traditional presentation in the Mudcat Cabin on Saturday Nite. I just may need to put a copy up for auction Joe. Kendall and Jacqui thank you so much for letting Mary and I put on the reception for you. And to everyone who responded so well to my cries for help, thank you, thank you, thank you. It was a wonderful time. Hopefully more later as the moments drift and settle. Playing with Pauline, David, Lucy et al, a quiet session with someone named Tom from NJ (rats, didn't realize there were two of them, wonder which Tom from NJ it was) The wild Saturday night sing, the jug band experience, Ron's viola, Sitting in the sun listening to Ed Trickett, (and having Joe Offer come up and say "Since I left Plumtree down in Tennesee, it's the first time I've been warm" just cracked me up, Playing Fiddle with Alaska Mike, the song someone sang to a Yeats poem about a fox hunter in the "in other words" work shop, Jack Beck's ballad workshop (I now have three Bothy Ballad recordings to listen to) "When the Rolls are Served Up Yonder" as sung by Carley? singing for a couple of hours with Allan C, Janie's great gospel songs, Karen K and Big Mick's song about the Seal people in Saturday night's talent show, and riding to and from with Jim Bunch. What a wonderful way to book end that weekend. There's more, I know, but I still have a sleep debt. |

I was so looking forward to it, as Ron and I have some great duets worked out now. We were so looking forward to singing them at various workshops and the concerts. I missed Ron dreadfully all weekend, but I am so glad that he went and had such a wonderful time as he always does. I didn't however, miss the cold damp condtions of Camp Ramble Wood. Ron came home dressed in seven layers of various T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters and topped it all off with a water proof jacket! Now I was pretty cold here without him, as he is my incredibly warm and toasty, life sized furry teddy bear, and I really missed not having him to cuddle up with at night. Unfortunately I was not at all well enough to go to the Getaway this year, after weeks of looking forward to it. Rats I say, but hopefully I will be OK for next year. I told Ron to go without me as I would have hated for him to have missed all the fun too. Of course next year I expect the Getaway to be held in warm sunny Hawaii, so that I too don't have to wear seven layers! Oops, Ron has just walked in, so I had better go and give this space back to him. I am so glad that you all had such a wonderful time. Take care everyone and bye for now............................ |

I've had colds before the Getaway that I'd mosty gotten over but were still messing up my voice when I went, and I've come down with colds during. If I'd felt as rotten before I left as I did last year on Sunday, I would have stayed home. None of them have been that serious, but staying up all night singing and freezing my butt off are really good ways to make a cold something worse. Ron, I wish I'd played more music with you. David the Harp too, and I don't think I played at all with Pauline except a bit on Friday night. I didn't find any nice, loud informal acapella singing during the whole weekend. I don't know whether the usual suspects were tired, frozen, sick, or just buggered off back home. I possibly just missed it. As to pictures, I'd like to see them too. The photographers are probably still recovering. One of the funnier things that happened was in the dining hall on Monday morning when people were leaving. Someone wanted to take a group shot (I missed the beginning of this) and folks were standing in that tiered, group photo formation. There were about 7 cameras. The funny thing was, pictures would be taken, then someone else would wander in and be directed to join the group. More pictures would be taken, then someone else would wander in, and...etc. If somebody were clever enough, they could make the sequence of photos into a little movie, with popping noises when another face magically appeared. I brought my camera, and never once got it out. I was too busy playing, singing, or talking, and much too lazy to go up a hill to fetch it. |

I can't say it enough - not only getting to meet 'catters face to face - but getting to meet the FSGW members - to hear their reminiscences of getaways past; their music etc, etc, etc. A couple of people chided me Friday evening for not singing (this was EARLY evening - I did sing later) when the truth was I was happily wallowing in the music going on around me. Janie - "my" song about the wolfhound is titled "The Wolfhound" (oddly enough) - lyrics by Alan of Oz as folk-processed by my brain. it's in the DT - and there is at least one thread on it in the forum. the 'Jam at Jeri's Stump' rendered by Big Mick - only missing a chorus of Shellbacks...maybe that can be remedied next year? katlaughing - health is a valid excuse - as far as energy we'll give transfusions as needed while you are with us (the amount of energy sizzling around at Getaway is incredible)- and pocketbook - heck - we'll find some way of getting past that. YOU NEED TO DO GETAWAY! Amos - you have no excuses. *grin* Thanks to those who helped cover my flubs in the shanty session - and those who put up with "Boris the Blue-balled Reindeer" at the parodies session - I had to get it out of my system! The "fat chorus" and the "loud chorus" groups were great - I skipped the Gospel session - what a stupid thing to do!!!! Ebbie and KT - I wish Alaska were closer - much closer! Mike - dammit you have to stop writing songs for me to steal!!!! The event sounds wonderful, and very tempting for next year. One wonders where a relative non-musician would fit in, with a head crammed full of obscure lyrics learned years ago? I don't play anything that is up to public performances, not even the piano any more, though I studied for many years. Singing along and filling in blank spots, I guess! I can also cook (feeding people works at these things, doesn't it? Or is there staff on site who do this?) How many Mudcatters were there, do you think? I'll have to go do some research on old threads to learn more about previous Getaways. SRS |

You'd be amazed at how many of them wind up singing a song or two though, because they've got a song and feel comfortable enough. The late night cabin music is completely unstructured, although it's usually a singaround to give everyone a chance. It's like a big informal party in a living room...a very cold living room. Think campfire singing as opposed to open mics or anything like that. |

I can't think of a nicer group of people with whom I could have chosen to spend that time. From the moment we arrived on Friday I was made to feel so welcome by everyone I met and I now have major crushes on just about all of you. Biggest highlight of the weekend for me was watching Kendall and Ed Trickett picking on the deck behind the dining hall. That was an hour and a half of pure magic as it marked a real turning point for the stubborn old b****r, from thinking that he was all washed up as a performer. As a result it did beat our reception into close second. (Kendall is a little concerned that I have categorised the two events in this way but I have to be honest and I think that you all will understand why) On that event, I can't say how much it meant to both of us. Thanks to you all, and I will not mention any names here. You made the celebration of our marriage the most wonderful time. I love all of you for that. Later that evening Kendall told me that, at last, he understood that he was loved for himself and not just for the voice he had lost. He said that he could feel the emotion in that room and it made him see what I and others had been telling him for so long. By the way ladies, he's not off limits just because he's married. If you want a hug, go ahead, he's got enough love for all of us. I'm sure there's more I'll want to put in here but that will do for the moment. I love you all. Jacqui Morse |

Probably happen in 2006, rather than next year. For the people who haven't been to a Getaway, this is a marvelous shanty chorus group started by Derek Seed. His idea was to find wonderful non-professional singers and give them a chance to spotlight their talents. There are about 60 members of the chorus, and 24 of them came to the U.S. last year, starting their trip with the FSGW Getaway. Each person has three songs they lead, that they have rehearsed with the group, and their concerts vary as to who leads what. HOWEVER, they also have their own wonderful individual repertoires so the variety of music they offer is pretty wide. Dani, your story about listening to the waltz jam made me melt, too. I remembered the song you all sang in Sunday's concert: "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." I've never enjoyed it so much. I especially loved watching Dani's bright smile as she sang. It's gotten so the Getaway wouldn't be the same without her bringing that lovely smile. Has anyone besides Jeri heard Elizabeth Laprelle's CD? I got to host her and her family for a house concert, meet them all and hear the songs live. Dottie H said it was the best concert she ever heard. Sandy Laprelle, Elizabeth's uncle Jon and aunt Amy, and their family friend Jim Lloyd are also on the CD. Jon, Amy and Jim are old-time musicians, folklorists & collectors. We tried to get Jim Lloyd to the Getaway this year but he had a commitment for Saturday. He teaches old-time guitar & banjo as well as being a great person to jam with. Maybe another year. I missed the MPSKGQuartet too, and you did get the name right Jeri, for which you should win a prize. We let the know the dates too late: Becky Kimmons was taking care of her 96 year old grandmother so her mom could go to a college reunion; Bill was hosting a Fairport Convention concert in Charleston, WV; and Will Fanning was home running his inn. They all send their love. They call themselves Soup Kitchen now. There's a new CD, better than the first one if you can believe it. Check the Soup Kitchen web site. There's another memory of the Getaway that just came up, reading Janie's comment about "other counselors." Saul Broudy's wife Colleen is a counselor for breast cancer patients. That reminded me that Colleen and Saul were married in June but they couldn't get to the wedding celebration, and Colleen couldn't see the Sunday concert, because there's NO way to get into the TV room without dealing with steps. Colleen and Lisa listened to the concert just outside the room at the foot of the steps. Made me more aware than I've ever been, of the need to build in facilities for wheelchair access. And wish we had arranged the room so the performers were closer to the stairs so Colleen and Lisa could hear better. It's so EASY to be insensitive and unconscious, isn't it? Colleen is another of those people who aren't Mudcatters but still come to the Getaway from a distance, many years, and it was wonderful to see both her and Saul. Rita |

I have had that song "in the trunk" for a while now, and, until he sang it, I had no idea the effect that it would have on people-- As soon as I can, I will send the lyrics along to the DT (if they'll have them!)-- Jeri, I wish we had had some more time to chat--I know we could have come up with some chording workarounds--I'm glad you liked my song--- It was a bit overwhelming to finally meet Max and Joe and Pene, the alleged puppetmasters--not enough time right now to mention everyone else, but it was like a family reunion for me-- |

Geeta and I had a wonderful (if frigid) time this year, and were extremely honored to have been included in Kendall and Jacqui's reception. (It was good champagne, too.) Thank you, Tinker, Sinsull, and the others who put it together and who thought of the other newlyweds. Of course, Kendall and Jacqui were the main attraction, and Jacqui is as warm, gracious and lovely as any of us could hope for for the cap'n. You're lucky to have found her, Kendall, and vise-versa. Working with El Greko on the songwriting workshop was fun - his music reminds me of no one so much as Ralph McTell. Leading "Big Fat Choruses" with Ed Trickett was also a lot of fun, with at least 50 people there and ready to sing, all in the space of an hour. Elizabeth LaPrelle was the big highlight for me this year, as last. Her CD was one of the best buys I've made in years, and I too wish I'd picked up a dozen. It's a joy to hear a musician - any musician - who has mastered a style of singing like that. She takes Appalachian singing out of the museum and gives it life again. Things that I missed this Getaway: Warmth! Hearing Jeri sing (though I did catch her playing fiddle nicely) Songs from a Hat - that sounded like my kind of fun Many other workshops - there just wasn't time for everything Soup Kitchen and others who couldn't make it this year The Sunday night concert - sorry, but we had to head home. It was a great time, and good to see friends, new, old, and lifelong. Dan |

As he left to go wherever it was he was trying to get, I said, with all the tact and sensitivity of a person who got 3 hours of bad sleep the night before, something like "Hey, who are you?" and looked at his button. I didn't even know you were planning on being there! Guitar help is always welcome, but therenever seems to be enough time, and there are always 2 or 3 other places you want to be. Dan, I think the only two songs I sang were 1) at the Rick Fielding workshop, and 2) at the Sunday night concert. That last was a last minute decision. One shouldn't stuff one's self full of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, peasandcarrots, etc, run off for a bladder break when one thinks one has time, run back up those damned stairs when one hears "Jeri's up...anybody seen Jeri," THEN immediately launch into a song. I just put new strings on the fiddle before I left home. They were not only fresh, but a new type, too, and I hadn't quite gotten used to them. They don't allow me to play too quietly - if I try, they squawk. Wish I'd played more, wish I'd sung more, wish I'd gotten to more workshops, and I wish I could have gotten more sleep. When someone manages to invent a transporter, I hope they figure out time travel, too. |

First by the vocal music- the talent and skills of you people is phenomenal. I was bathed in it, immersed in it, drowned in it. Goosebumps on already chill flesh is a new experience for me. And then, by the heart-warming quality of the people I met at every turn. I do earnestly hope that no one judged me as being non-forthcoming or non-appreciative.. There are several valid reasons for why I didn't sing more: #1, I'm not a performer (although I am profoundly grateful for the people who are); #2, I have a small problem with claustrophobia and crowds in general (I love jams but I'm more comfortable with smaller groups of 5 to 15); #3, I had such a GRAND time just listening and absorbing. Oh, and recording. I pretty much filled up the 5 mini discs I had brought with me. The last one filled up on Sunday evening, so no recording from then on, which I regret. After I have the songs put on CDs I'm going to be busy learning lots of new songs. I did ask from time to time whether anyone objected to being recorded but if anyone does object, please feel free to PM me and let me know, and I'll delete any given song. (After I have learned it for myself. *G*) |

Seeing and greeting Max and Pene and many more, I am suffering from withdrawel symptoms,BTW where DID all that booze come from? and the one BAD!!!! memory of the Getawy, which I will carry to my Grave, The taste of Blackberry Brandy... YEUCHHHH!!!!! It defies description, and I can still taste it 3 days later!!! |

Most of us were pinching ourselves and quietly wondering: "Am I really here listening to Kendall Morse and Ed Trickett jam?" Lord, I cried a lot this weekend. Jeri coaxed a tear or two at the Rick F. workshop. Mick (who still owes me a ring) coaxed a few more at the Sunday concert. Max attempted to give me a hickey (SP? It's been so long I don't know how to spell it) and I laughed until I cried. The wedding emotions, chats with close friends, sad tales of the year's sorrows, happy tales of babies, and of course laughing until I cried. El Greco is a sweetheart. Someone will have to convince him that I will not hurt him. BUT he is still in contention for replacement Mudcat heartthrob. Ebbie is so modest and shyly hides her talent. The lady can play and sing and fill a room with happiness. KT - WOW says it all. She is beautiful inside and out and talented as well. Susan A-R is just bad - another laughed until I cried moment when she described her run-in with a flight of stairs. Another lady who can sing and play and fill a room with light. Alaska Mike playing his guitar on a side street in Princeton while awaiting his ride. Our beautiful Dani lit up the room with her music and her smile. Janie - I secretly watched her swaying as she practised her wedding song in a small outdoor amphitheater. A beautiful lady. AllanC's California Dreamin'. Micca...just Micca. What more is there to say. I can't wait to meet the lady who has him under control - Miss Phiddle must be remarkable and a saint in the making. Tinker, my friend and playmate with her raunchy lyrics and innocent demeanor. Bro Joe - all dimples and mischief and innocence (Anybody buying it?) Jacqui and Kendall at the wedding - who would believe we could touch the old crank and make him teary? Who could sit dry eyed through Jacqui's "Love Me Tender" then watch as Kendall questioned Dan Schatz whether he was bawling or balling? Some things never change. I don't know who handled all the arrangements this year. I know Nancy King helped Rita put it all together. Thank you. Post Getaway blues have already set in. I missed Miss Annie and Barry Finn and the Patons...next year. More to come as I wind down and remember. |

Then Sinsull and Tinker coming by sharing hugs and allowing me to add my stuff to their substantial amount of wedding reception gear. The trip to Maryland was filled with great stories and much laughter. Thank you so much Tinker for transportation and conversations. When we got to Ramblewood, there were so many wonderful memories: *meeting El Greko, sharing songs with this talented fellow, and finding out that he must be a previously unknown brother. *Once again hearing David's marvelous harp as he accompanied Lucy's unusually haunting voice, magnificent. *Ron's viola and Susan's violin so sweetly playing behind me as I sang my song for the concert, Thanks again you two. *The great planning on the part of FSGW, and superb meals provided by the kitchen staff. *Singing my mini-concert in the wonderfully WARM sunshine on Saturday morning. *Watching my good friend Mick get so embarassed when he tripped over his tongue. *The incredible love and joy that was so obvious between Kendall and Jacqui. *The harmonies of the Schatz family at the Saturday concert. WOW!! *Putting a smiling face to the name "Bobert". *Sharing a brew (or two) in Stalag 14 with the late night song demolition crew. *Seeing KT and Ebbie (both fellow Alaskans) enjoying the Getaway as much as I did. *Getting shushed for singing too loud. *Hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs and hugs and songs and then more hugs from damn near everyone. Sharing two fantastic days on the road with Mick as we traveled up to WYSIWYG's for a night of music, food, songs and blessed sleep. Then traveling through Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan stopping occasionally to eat, pee and find out about the mysterious paintings on the bridge in Hazel Hurst (2 words), PA. Spending the second night in Cincinatti watching the Reds pulverize the Yankees and then visiting the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame the next morning. Missing time deadlines and finally arriving at my son's house in Traverse City after getting lost because my stupid Map program likes me to take the scenic route. Thanks so much to all of you for making my visit to the Getaway so wonderful. I won't know if I can be there next year until it gets closer to the time, but I promise to try. Mike |

Bobert has all the "Bad Boy" good looks of Sam Elliot in a biker movie but he is a sweetheart. And the boy can play and sing. He was a pleasant surprise. More favorite moments: Alaska Mike singing "So Lonesome I Could Cry" just for me. Tawmmie better come next year or I may have to add Mike to the Mudcat Heart Throb list. Ed Trickett leaving a workshop to come back with lyrics to "Old Wing" when I requested it. Ed, in the tradition of Kendall and Rick and so many others, is incredibly modest about his incredible talent. Big Mick's wedding song for the happy couple that left Kendall teary-eyed...or did I mention that already. Meeting Tinker's children. Do not miss a chance to spend an evening in front of the TV with DeWalt family. AJ, Ben, Zach and Julian were pure fun. Funny to watch the petite Tinker herding her brood and keeping them semi-under control. Favorite line? As we discussed good and bad TV programs, Zach, with an impish grin, quietly states "Sex In The City is a pretty good show." For the record: "Too Many Parties" was supposed to be done seriously. Judy Cook caught my eye, mimed dabbing rouge on her cheeks, and I was led astray. I think Kendall meant it when he snarled "I will kill you" at me. I might have stayed on the path of the righteous had he remembered the key we practiced in. (No - I will never learn) So good to see old friends - Gutbuster Jim, Dick the hurdy-gurdy man and his meatballs (there in lies a tale. Alaska Mike does blush), Dottie and her uke, our beloved Pene with "limpid eyes", and more later. |

Exciting and dangerous and just waiting for someone to charge off a cliff. Not that Micca or Sinsull (or Jarius for that matter) would ever subtly egg on borderline behavior..... It was a ton of fun, but highly challenging. And just for the record I'm still four inches taller than Zach. The Friday night sing in the dining room with crowds joining in to all the "traditional" top 40 favorites.... and having John LaPrelle laughingly say if someone starts Jet Plane I'm leaving just as Sinsull began Kumbya.... Hug and Hugs and inner warmth, connections instantly restored Pictures of Lily of the amazing blue eyes Sinsull covering herself with almost as much frosting as the wedding cake --leaning over is a bitch. ElGrecko muttering to himself through the Bob Song and cracking me up. Singing Baby Owlet at 4am in attempts to lullabye the cabin to bed. Talking with Ron Davies on the way up the hill, missing Jan with him and the duets saved for next year. Ebbie's watchful eyes and bright smile occaisionally fussing at KT. And her thoughful goodbye that touched me deeply. I've got Solomon's Seal to plant too... perhaps Bobert is just spreading Mudcat wisdom up and down the coast.. tink |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2004 - MEMORIES From: wysiwyg Date: 21 Oct 04 - 11:46 AM At the Getaway extension, my best memory is leaning over the "broken" inner parts of the loo with Alaska Mike leaning over me as expert consultant and water-bearer, with me laughing in great whoops when the water-fill-valve spritzed me in the face with COLD water, every time I let loose my hold on the slimy, corroded float ball, as he poured in coffeepots-full of water.... and then, after telling the assembled company the downstairs loo was now on "emergency-flush-only" status, having Susan come downstairs from the UPstairs loo, telling me... it wasn't working so good, either. Gee, after that, people sure got on the road fast..... sissies! Both pottys were fine BTW-- the downstairs one is a very slow fill and the upstairs one is sometimes a slow drain. Hardi checked them out and determined that mutiple users downstairs had simply not allowed the tank to refill completely after each flush, making it seem like it had been running continuously, forever. And he adjusted the upper. This memory was made all the better for Dick having sung "Pity the Downtrodden Landlord" the night before, because ours truly is, and we bother him only for true emergencies. Country livin' is grand! Also I now have secret knowledge of neat sleepers and cover-flingers, and I know who threw a heavy lamp in whose face in the night. From this one can easily deduce who arrived the most exhausted and slept the most deeply! :~) Alaska Mike, that was you in the middle bed, right? The next guests in the Mudcat Attic Dorm will find that the upgraded amenities include a special new "Alaska Mike" pee-bucket! ~Susan |

His delivery is right on, and his guitar work is really something. He knows how to mix it all up just right for a spectacular performance. And his lyrics .... well, he has become a favorite songwriter for me after one exposure. Wonderful talent, wonderful old friend just met. I am in awe, sir. Yeah, we had a time, didn't we, lads and lasses? MESSAGE TO KENDALL: I am watching, and one slip and I am going to rob that lady from you. She is a catch of the first order. The love she has for our dear friend (he of the wrinkled .... nevermind) is equalled only by the love that her presence makes others feel for her. I am honored to have been able to sing "His English Rose" for them. I absolutely loved being able to sing "Mary and the Seal" with karenk. Does this woman have a voice, or what? I was worried going in about voice match, but that dissipated quickly. What a treat! KT sang her most stunning song, IMHO, which she wrote about her Mother. Her Mama "got away" some time ago, and the last time she sang it was at the funeral. What a gift she gave us by singing it for the first time. It affected her, but that pain gave the song even more meaning for me. Jeri, when are you and I going to sing some of those marvelous songs you write? The big lad himself (Alaska Mike) and I had a great ramble. I don't think we stopped chatting during the whole of two days, except when we put the occasional CD on. Between him and KT, I feel pretty confident that there are songs coming. Mike spent a lot of time sharing his passion for people with me. This man feels there are songs in and about every person he meets. He laid out for me how he uncovers them, gives the focus, creates them. And then, as we rambled the hills, valleys, and wonderful villages of Northern Pennsylvania, Providence decided that it would show me the wisdom of Mike's words. You will have to wait for the songs to hear the stories, but they will be worth the wait. You will hear of Hazel Hurst, a one armed waitress, Snorky, Tranzue, a piece of pine, and a bridge. We will introduce you to a woman, who started out prim and proper, and later showed us her heart, and let us glimpse the beautiful young woman she was years ago. She told us of the beauty when she was in bloom, and let us see the greater beauty of her soul in bloom. I couldn't have had a better guide on this journey than Alaska Mike Campbell. And thanks to Dick Swain for the journeyman tuning duties .... I am in your debt ......LOL. My goal is that you will all come to this special event, and make these memories. The words will remain in our collection of wedding memorabilia for ever. There were so many high spots it's hard to put them all down here, but I must mention meeting and hearing KT. Such talent combined with honesty and straightforwardness is rare. Especially when combined with a lack of ego. This lady is a real treasure, and when she sang The Old Salt for me I felt very priviledged to know her. KT, you haven't seen the last of me! You and me gonna "pick" together some day. Another high was "picking" with my dear friend, Ed Trickett on the porch. It has been so long since we swapped songs that it really felt good. MMario, you would have been welcome to stop and listen, it was not a closed session. Once again, I thank the FSGW for inviting me to return, and, I thank everyone for being so accepting of my bride, Jacqui. You all made her feel so welcome, she can't wait for next year to come again. Yeah, Mick, Karen K's voice when she sang with you just about blew me away. I've heard her do some really good singing but that was the best. Her voice rang like a silver bell. And thank you Mick for the insights into how Alaska Mike creates those songs. Who heard Saul Broudy's concert? What were the highlights? (These Memories threads help everybody share in the stuff they missed because of lack of proper cloning equipment at the camp.) I remember the first time I met Colleen and Saul, at Camp Letts some years ago. I wasn't involved with putting on the Getaway then, I was just the first person Saul ran into when he arrived and realized there were NO bed linens, pillows, blankets, etc in the cabins. Bill and I always brought enough stuff to furnish a small cottage, and we borrowed more stuff (pillows, etc) from Laura and Peter Sailer, and got them fixed up. By the time Bill and I chased all over the camp to do that, we had spent quite a bit of time chatting with Saul and Colleen, and for me Colleen had already become one of those people where you start to smile inside when you catch sight of them. That's part of the magic that happens at the Getaway, isn't it? At a "normal" folk festival you enjoy the music together but you're not likely to feel that you're spending time with 100 or so of the dearest people on earth. Rita |

He thought he hated the music until one of his friends started singing songs from the Pyrates Royale and Darriel realized he knew a bunch of them -- and at least one of the Pyrates -- as a result of his misspent youth. When friends asked him how he knew the shanties when "he didn't have the Pyrates CD," he said, "Didn't you know? My real parents abandoned me as a baby and I was raised by a pack of wild folk singers." He was one of the leaders of the Getaway Shantey Sing this year :-) and when he's in town is a regular at the Royale Mile Pub Shantey Sing in Wheaton, MD. A few years back Charlie set up a "Passing it On" workshop at the Washington Folk Festival. The performers were: Nancy King, Ken & Dan Schatz (not singing all together yet....); Carly Gewirz & Dean & Sam Clamons; and Rita Ferrara, Bill and Darriel Day. Sound familiar? For several years, I have been watching the Getaway threads and have felt such joy for all of you who attended, and an ever-deepening desire to participate. Last year was a distinct possibility, but I ended up traveling to NY for my niece's wedding in September and couldn't do both. So I determined that this was going to be the year of my first Getaway. Well, folks, it surpassed my wildest imaginings in talent, diversity, generosity, joy, love, surprise and hilarity. (Oh yeah, and cold!) Ebbie and I began our Getaway by meeting Fotunato and Micca in the parking lot of our hotel. As I looked over the railing to see who was out there, I heard, "What light from yonder window breaks...." And it was all chuckles and grins from there. At Fortunato's, we were treated to a wonderful meal prepared by his dear wife, and then a grand music circle. TJ taught us a song in which we all had to take a break. Now the only guitar break I've ever taken was when I set it down to go and get a cup of coffee! So I was feeling a little (okay, a LOT) intimidated, but with their support, I stumbled through it, (like I had a choice?) and everyone was so very kind! We had a great time sharing music, and I remember remarking at the end of the evening, that if this was all there was to the Getaway, I'd go home happy. Ron Davies and everyone else assured me that that was just the beginning, and indeed it was! I'm afraid to begin writing of all of the things that gave me such great joy over those few days, because it would be so long that it would probably crash this site for weeks. I think I'll have to write bits and pieces, over a period of several days. For now, I will say that meeting all of you has been such a thrill! I was so excited every time I met someone new and put a face to the name I'd seen and " known" from these threads. There was no way to disguise the fact that I was a newbie! You are all more wonderful than I could have realized from these threads and I'm so grateful to have been so welcomed into the fold. After the Getaway, in our hotel room Monday night, Ebbie and I said goodnight to each and every one of you!! (in The Waltons fashion) Just couldn't help ourselves! (more confirmation that we're a bit....what did Bobert say, looney?) We left our hotel at 5 the next morning to head back home. And ya wanna know the best part? We ALREADY have our plane tickets to come back next year!!!!!! NO KIDDING!!!!!!! The flight was overbooked by two and they offered us each a free ticket if we'd give up our seats!!! Now which of you wonderful folks arranged THAT, huh? There was so much magic in the weekend, that that wouldn't surprise me in the least!! I'll post again soon, with memories, but for now, thank you , thank you, thank you, one and all, for welcoming me, and sharing such a delightful weekend. But I learned (on Oprah!) that some foods have a tranquilizing effect as they metabolize-- so high-fat (the good kinds) snacks or meals have often sent Hardi off for a nice long snooze. ("I can't, really, I won't sleep tonight if I..... zzzzzzz") I ain't saying I was RIGHT in my diagnosis, but a little barbecue and a little lentil stew with cinnamon and cloves and olive oil and red wine can be highly therapeutic with a beer! We got a rainbow! We're blessed. I think there's a song in there.) Seeing Laura Sailer, in total bliss, lost to the outside world, playing the harp Saturday night. Eric Cole, who brought the harp for Laura to play. Playing violin duets (classical music) on Saturday night with Lisa Sailer, a talented, accomplished, enthusiastic, and absolutely delightful young lady. All that candied ginger! I brought some home with me. I knew I'd be too tired to go grocery shopping. Thank you, Bruce. Charlie Baum, the great organizer, who took care of everyone and their problems. Thank you, Charlie. My winter weight sleeping bad, winter coat, 3 sweaters, and warm shirt. The food, which was somewhat better this year than last year. Dick Greenhaus's session on collecting songs, with the added bonus of CDs for all attendees with the the songs he played and discussed. More later... |

A memory I'll cherish is Allan my son(at 22 no longer a kid) singing Kilkelly Ireland and my crying. All of his singing participation and Dick Swains gracious sharing leading the Sea Songs with Allan and Darriel. Just makes me want to sing and cry at hte same time and that doesn't work too well! There were too few kids here this year. I don't necessarily want them under foot but they do absorb the music just by being there. Allan shares one of his favorite memories of just walking from one cabin to another or trudging up the hill that there's music wafting through the air-all kinds of music-harps, hurdie gurdie guitar wash tubs...Kids need this so yes there's always room for a small one at the get a way- to my mind anyway. The McDonald's generous singing and Mary's singing Rise Up Mr. Rathbone in the singing the fishin workshop. Very special. And Geroge Stephens Black Fly at the Frozen North. And Sauls masterful harmonica playing, Alaska Mikes hugs and Dani's glow at Sunday nights concert. The skiffle porch jam with Max, Jeff, Jim and Dani was definitely a highlight. The dynamic duo of Tinker and Sinsull (AKA Mutt & Jeff)Alaska Mike's wonderful bass harmonies. Rita sharing the song she wrote (I Like (love?) Trees, Not Tail-lights)in the Nature et.al. sing around, and the story of its making, acompanied by the rain, thunder and lightning, with the Rainbow as a grand finale to the workshop!!! I felt like we had summoned all of it with our singing. Have you ever seen such wonderfully open, clear-eyed, friendly faces as those of Judy and Dennis Cook? Well, maybe Joe Offer is a match for them. The sheepish look on Allan C.'s face as he confessed to never have played a kazoo before. Getting the beautiful scarlett runner bean seeds from Lynn, and the shared love of gardening and plants with Bobert and Lynn,all of us talking a hundred miles an hour. Charlie Baum's half elfish-half buddha smile. Being serenaded by Dick Greenhaus just outside his booth just because I was lucky enough to be walking by when the spirit moved him to burst into song! This year I actually tried to get something done at work and have resisted posting until now. I was sort of hugging my thoughts and memories into myself and trying to perserve the feeling of last weekend. Memories kept popping up though and this darned thread drew me like some huge magnet. So I got sh##**! done. I was useless. A lot of the public memories have already been stated. Here are some of mine that are a little more off the beaten path. They are not in any particular order. Seeing the human side of Kendall and meeting the gal who brought it out. I've always been a little in awe of the Captain, and he seemed to be a new person this trip. Less gruff. More smiles. Harmonizing and playing with Susan ARRRRRR. She has the ability to bring out the best musicianship in everyone. Jamming with Alan C. Singing and playing with Dani and Janie. They are both growing in confidence and skill musically. Hearing Linda Goodman's songs and watching her performances in various workshops. She is the dimunitive gal that always is wearing a hat. She really is funny folks! Talking with and getting to know better Alaska Mike, Jeri, Carli and others. Hearing Tinker sing the blues and her "My Best Friend BOB song." Sharing an inside joke with MMario during Bob. Getting hugged when I arrived. Seeing Pene and Max again, and playing with them. The porch Jam with Janie and Dani was as close to heaven as I'm likely to get. Man I wish they were closer. We would have an awesome time. And of course meeting KT, Ebbe (her smile makes me smile), Bobert, El Grecko, and everyone else. I'm ready to move to Alaska this minute. At one point Sunday night I looked across the room and thought how can we come from all across the globe and have such a rapport, and be just good folks. It's simply amazes me. Having people like my music, the gutbucket and the cigar box guitar. This is much different from home and its great! JAB P.S. I understand that the recommended treatment for hypothermia is to get into a sleeping bag with another warm person. Next year, remember that I'm an old married guy and am therefore safe. I offer to come to the rescue of anyone that needs warmin' up. :-) Also, it was El-Grecko that was doing the snoring. I didn't hear anyone else :-) |

Every day I drive through a construction zone on my way to work and hearing his stories has me grinning like the cheshire cat! Fact is, I've hardly stopped grinnin' since last weekend. I told Ebbie that last time we were in a store it was one week ago, with Mick, buying goodies for the potluck......sigh.......The memories are so fresh and sweet, it's hard to believe it's already been a week. I recited "Jerseywocky" (a parody of Jabberwocky) and a selkie parody of "Lucille". -- The "Songs Kids Really Sing" workshop, even though it was small (my fault...got up the hill late from the wedding party). It was me, Kathy Mack, Barry S., and Clan LaPrelle. I sang a parody of "Hava Nagila" and three versions of "I'm Lookin' Over My Dead Dog Rover" from the GREASY GRIMY GOPHER GUTS collection, plus two songs from the filk community which have been favorites among our younger members. I also discovered I knew one more verse to "Three Jolly Fishermen" than everyone else. -- The Wedding Party (even if I only got an abbreviated look...). An impressive spread! -- Shamelessly pandering to Darriel and Allen by singing "Lukey's Boat" in the Sea Songs and Shanties workshop (Hey, us Great Big Sea fans gotta stick together, eh?) Gary |

Re-meeting Micca and remembering his name this time. Taking time to talk with lots of friends, including MMario, Lisa Null, Susan F, the LaPrelles, and many others. Buying some things at the auction and contributing to the scholarship fund (Last year I was a recipient.) Lisa Null singing "Oh Freedom" and "Murder, Rape,..." Mary LaMarca singing her song about Mr. Rathbone. The blues jam Sunday night with Donna, Nan, Ron, Bobert, Bob Clayton and David not-tone-deaf Diamond. Hearing Carly cry when she sang a sad song. I missed a lot of friends who were not there: Jan (I hope your health improves soon), Keith from Conn. (now Oregon), Chuck and Sheila Thorpe, Claymore, and Bootsie. |

Here are some of the memories I hold dear, in no particular order...... Seeing Micca for the first time since London a few years back, hearing him sing his songs with such gusto, and the general merriment everyone feels in his presence Having the privilege of riding with Mick to the Getaway. From the moment he poked his head into the hotel lobby, it was as though we were reunited with an old friend. Lots of stories, songs, laughter, and yes, even tears, and that was before we even got to Ramblewood! The man is a walking heart! A very kind soul, indeed. And a heck of a singer. Expect original tunes from this man.....they are brewing....... Having the privilege of riding with Carly back from the Getaway, sharing stories all along the way, as if we'd been friends for years, meeting her wonderful husband and son, sharing that delicious meal (even if the rice WAS yellow!) and chocolate brownies at the restaurant! And that waitress! What a kick! Singing on the porch at the Cracker Barrel......hearing Alaska Mike's songs then and throughout the weekend. Walking back to my cabin late one night (er....early one morning) and hearing Mike's voice pierce the darkness....very warm, very comforting....What a powerful voice! I can see a trip to Anchorage in the future.....(too bad I didn't realize until yesterday that Bill Staines is performing there tonight......) Thursday evening at Chance's house - hearing the talent in that room, that at once, delighted and intimidated me...hearing Chance play and sing, chopping veggies with Suzette, witnessing the joy and love and pride on TJ's face as he sang a duet with his son First meeting Kendall and Jacqui, on Friday night....what a thrill to meet these two people I've carried in my heart without ever having met them, yet there was instant recognition.... And their wedding reception....the love in that room was palpable, and I was so moved to witness and be a part of it Hearing Charlie sing Hineh Ma Tov, and several other songs, and having him send us off to bed with a blessing....(I know it might not be considered a traditional blessing, but bless me it did!) Meeting and hearing Ed Trickett!! Swapping harmonies with Karenk and heaing her beautiful, clear voice as she sang, This Time Again Meeting Gutbucketeer and being amazed by his creativity. Did you see that guitar he made? Having dinner with MTed before realizing who he was! I attended a nap workshop one afternoon, but all the tunes and laughter running through my head made it impossible to sleep. Feeling so full and content with all that had happened so far, I decided to just take a walk and let it all settle in....It was then I happened upon Kendall and Ed playing on the patio. WOW! Little then did I realize what a sacred space I had entered. Thanks, guys, for allowing me to listen. Hearing Carly sing her songs, solo and with Charlie! Sunday morning in the sunshine, sharing music and stories with Kendall and Jacqui. I am changed for knowing these two lovely people and honored to call them friends. Trying (in vain) to stop giggling in the middle of the night after seeing Ebbie buried in her sleeping bag Dani's beautiful smile, powerful singing voice and a promise of more time next time Hearing MMario sing! And watching him, gracious host that he is, haul a bed and a box spring into the other room for his guests to sit upon! But Mario, I didn't get to see the shawl!! Joe Offer's enthusiastic rendition of any song! (Especially the ones on Friday night!) And the way he gave his rapt attention to everyone's song! Bill D's GREAT songs and wonderful spirit! Ron Davies incredible vocal and viola harmonies Alan C's repertoire of singable songs and the ease with which he gets everyone to sing along. "All the leaves are brown......." Hearing the Schatz brothers! Awesome! Finally putting faces with the names of Jeri and Sinsull, whose printed words here, I have come to respect and anticipate with eagerness. Meeting Max and Jeff! I am in awe of these two, and look forward to getting to know them better in the future. And seeing the pics of Max's darling daughter Kazoos! Bobert! (Nothing like I expected, but now, just thinking of him makes me smile!) Jerry's concertina playing Lucy's clear, honest songs and David's harp playing....phenomenal!!! Meeting sweet Tinker on Friday night, and then being surprised and delighted by her smokey renditions of some great songs! And her watchful eye......she doesn't miss much! The harmonies everywhere!! Saying goodbye 5 times before leaving the grounds of Ramblewood, 30 minutes each time! ElGreko - whose honest, powerful music moves me to tears. I've been listening to his music at work and now he's got my workmates in tears, too. It still baffles me that you flew over for two and a half days!!! I had no intention of signing up to perform in the concert. El Greko made me do it!! I don't know why he had the ability to convince me to do it... he's got some kind of charm, but I'm grateful that he did. And grateful for the opportunity to sing with him and Alaska Mike. Talking to Rachael and Richard after Friday night's concert. Many other conversations which took place over the weekend, too numerous to mention, but held dear all the same The graciousness of every single person I had the privilege of meeting Being treated to a smorgasbord of fabulous music....It was such a gift to be able to listen to each and every one. Though I've many, many more fond memories, I'd better stop for now. Thank you, one and all, for a weekend full of joyful memories. Can't wait 'til next year! KT |

The last few days with my son, daughter in law and grand daughter have been priceless. My thanks again to Big Mick for driving me across Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan to get me here. Many thanks also to the FSGW folks who planned and carried out a fantastic weekend. Last year was my very first Getaway and I thought it could never be topped. But this year's event seemed to push the envelope on how much fun an old Alaska boy can have. Special thanks to all the people attending this year's Getaway. I am a lucky man to have met each and every one. There is a long, dark winter about to begin, but I know I will be warmed by the friends made and music shared. I'm planning a trip to England next August and look forward to sharing a song or two with all my good friends across the pond. Hopefully, I'll be able to also visit Ramblewood once again as well. I saw a song-sheet or two in some workshops but I saw some two-hour singalongs when it seemed like the same voices were there the whole time and the guitars never stopped. Jeesh! When we came up here last year we felt like kids in grade school compared to the level of folklore knowledge at the Getaway. Now we feel like kids when it comes to repertoire. You guys set some tough standards. Related to that, this sure is a supportive group. Is there anything that isn't "folk"? Cause I didn't see anybody sing anything whose offering wasn't welcomed and supported. If anybody had any qualms about the "folkiness" of anybody's offering it was raised later and too quietly for me to hear it. At one point I remarked to Rita that the thing that really distinguished this group is the generosity of the listening. There are 200 posts here about how great the other musicians at the Getaway were. When I look at the name on the post, sure enough the poster is one great musician taking time to appreciate another. It's hard to believe, but I think affection and decency has the upper hand here and that the cut-throat competition of show-biz is left even farther out in the cold than our sleeping cabin. |

At one point in the big Dining Hall sing I heard someone start "The Sloop John B.", followed by what some might call hackneyed, tired, overdone songs, and some very un-folky tunes. Afraid to sing out loud, when I looked around, I expected to see the tired rolling of jaded eyes. What I saw instead was a group of people who just love to sing, damn it, feeling unafraid to pull out the dusty best thing they love to sing and the world be damned. Nobody said a word, and if anyone hated it, they left. But I didn't see anyone leave, and I sang as loud as anyone. It was one of those moments of Getaway magic, to me, that the right chord could be struck with music like this, because of the mutual respect and love for what truly matters most. That's why I keep coming back. And, though I don't want to over-analyze, I do think the analogy of children is a good one. Adults have to be adults all day, teenagers are stuck in High School with other teenagers all day, and little ones spend their days in little worlds. Anyone who has had an opportunity to see kids of different ages interact at play or learning understands the dynamic of how people play and learn better when there is someone better/older/greener/younger than you are. We were in a two-day craft fair, with setup on Friday. A bit much for the weekend after the Getaway. I'll "remind" him about getting more pictures up. And yeah, biglappy & Dani, we're a pretty eclectic group. LaMarca said she knew she would fit in, because at her first Open Sing the song I did was "Rocky Raccoon." Did anyone go to LaMarca's "Forbidden Pleasures" workshop, last year or the year before? It was a workshop for singing all the stuff you really like that is definitely NOT folk music. Of course LaMarca's knowledge of folk music makes me feel like a kindergartner.... So does her knowledge of rock music.... You should hear her sing Jefferson Airplane/Starship's "White Rabbit". Bill used to have a T-shirt that said "Uncontrite Modal Folker." Can't remember if he actually had a T that said "Purist Snob" but he wears the title proudly. :-) But he sings 50's pop, the pre-Bill Haley kind. Bill D. and I have had our differences of opinion about taste ("This bus is drafty and you can't deny it..."), mainly because I have yet to find a genre of music that doesn't contain at least one song or number that has redeeming social value (well, I haven't actually given rap/hip-hop a chance to prove itself yet...) Would other folks be interested in a workshop/song swap where we sing our favorite songs from our misguided youth? (Not to mention our misguided adulthood?) In addition to Jefferson Airplane, I used to be able to sing everything on Joni Mitchell's first 6 albums, I've snuck an occasional Cowboy Junkies song into song swaps, and I'm about to leave work to go hear Richard Thompson doing his "1,000 Years of Popular Music". If there are other kindred spirits out there who are just looking for their chance to do their jugband version of "Layla", let Rita know we need a Forbidden Pleasures workshop next year. It would be sort of like singing around a campfire with a bunch of people who're just folks, not folkies and are just singing what they know. (One of the most fun times I had camping was when I went with my office. Someone found an oldies station, and we sat around the fire singing our brains out along with the radio.) There are some people who sniffed and said "I don't like that. It's not traditional. Did you just write it?" when Barbry Allen was sung the first time ever. |

Maybe along with "Songs from a Hat" we could have "Songs from the Sap Bucket" (somebody draws out a piece of paper that says "mother" or "dead pets" or "flowers" or "tears" or...got it?) and sing "Honey," and "Billy, Don't Be a Hero," or traditional songs (which are almost always better) in the same vein. We could actually put the titles of sappy pop songs in the bucket and require people to do a trad (or mostly trad) song with the same theme. Or not. |

(This won't be clickable links, just an image you can open in a new window for reference)... I will be in & out of my workshop all day, and doing thse pics on breaks from **work**.. it may go fast or slow, depending on how much I tinker with the images, some of which are kinda dark, or had windows in the pic, fooling my cameras's exposure meter. |

And I have sent an apology to at least one Catter fir having to cut a conversation short 'cause I was concerned about gettin' El "Mister" Greco to the airport in time to catch his plane... However, most camps charge a (huge) minimum for each night and we aren't willing to bankrupt the Society in order to add a couple of nights to the Getaway, so we'll try to find out a bit about cost & then see how many people could make it for the extra days and nights. It's awfully unlikely that we can make it work for next year though. It might be cheaper to rent a block of rooms & an all-night conference /singing room in a nearby motel for Thursday night! |
