Subject: Dave Williams-Pipe Maker..Sad news....
From: GUEST,Pete Sumner
Date: 20 Oct 04 - 09:03 PM

I am very sorry to pass on this news which has just reached me from Lincolnshire, UK.
Dave Williams, highly respected maker of Uillean Pipes, and a friend to many musicians throughout the world, sadly died in a car accident near his home on Tuesday evening.
Details of the accident are still emerging but he was the sole occupant in his car which overturned on a sharp bend.
I will always remember Dave as a wonderful friend and very dedicated maker of some of the world's finest musical instruments.

I pass on this news with great sadness....

Pete Sumner

It was a tragic accident and such a loss to so many people. Dave's funeral is on Thursday at 3.40 at the Grimsby Crematorium, Weelsby Road. Family flowers only.

I did not know of him, but I love the pipes and judging by everything I see on google about him, his were of the highest order. I know there is more to a man that the instruments he makes, but that alone speaks of a wonderful craftsman and well-respected, too. It is sad to hear of this tragic loss. May his family find some kind of peace in their memories and his legacy of beautiful music.

Respectfully,

kat

That's really sad news. He was a fantastic flute player. I've been to many a session where he impressed me with his skill and dexterity. In fact, I was sat next to him in a session just last week.

We are in a renaissance period with regard to the Uilleann Pipes. As a result, many new pipe makers are emerging. Losing a maker like Dave is a loss as his was work of the first order. Toss in the fact that he was a wonderful musician and one starts to sense the loss. God be good to him.

I knew Dave well at school, and later, in Cleethorpes. We occasionally shared a stage. Some 'catters may be surprised at early Williams performances. I hadn't seen him for years since I moved to Durham but I'm very saddened to hear of his death. My sympathies to his family and friends. RIP Dave.

I went to Daves funeral yesterday I'm still sad but was gladdened to see the love and respect that he had earned from so many people wordwide. He would ,I think, have been proud to have known that Paddy Keenan piped his coffin in and indeed piped Dave to another session in the sky.At the wake upward of twenty musicians played for Dave many of us cried at the beauty of the pipes and laughed at memories
we shared with a modest loving gentleman who will be sorely missed by all.

Philip, as an Uilleann Piper, I am basking in the mental imagery you have given us. I can only imagine how wonderful this gathering was. God be good to him, his voice will be heard in the pipes he built and the pipers he inspired.

All the best,

Mick

Having just returned from the Liverpool irish festival & return to camden town via a night off & session in Tom King's bar in Slough: traditional musicians in England are still stunned by the news.

My own recollections and memories of Dave:
your pipes were a joy to play with! ..........great guy to have a yarn with; a gentleman,
RIP Dave.

A nice tribute to Dave on the BBC Radio Lincolnshire Folk Music programme Wednesday evening last, including a track of a tune played on a set of his pipes. Tom Lane and the team obviously very moved and saddened by this tragic loss. RIP.
