HI all!

Just found you site here while searching fervently for the lyrics to an old German WW2 song "Auf Krete". I just returned from a trip there and my cousins were drinking and singing it. Sounded pretty cool and would love to learn it (and help my poor, poor german)

Thanks!

Hi, Joe - I think you want "Auf Kreta." I'm not sure if it's the correct song, but it's certainly interesting. The Website where I found it has a fascinating collection of WWI German songs - (click).

Auf Kreta im Sturm und im Regen

3. Da sprach er, mit sterbender Stimme,
Komm Kamerad und reich mir deine Hand
Und nimm diesen Ring von meinem Finger
Und schenk ihn meiner Liebst' als Abschiedspfand.
|: Die Sternlein funkeln vom Himmel in die Nacht,
Grüß mir die Heimat,
Grüß mir mein Mägdelein aus blut'ger Schlacht. :|

4. Auf Kreta da flattern unsre Fahnen,
Wir Fallschirmjäger haben doch gesiegt,
Und sind auch so viele gefallen,
Der Ruhm der Fallschirmjäger aber blieb.
|: Die Sternlein funkeln vom Himmel in die Nacht,
Grüß mir die Heimat,
Grüß mir mein Mägdelein aus blut'ger Schlacht. :|

I think "Mächenherze" should be "Mädchenherze" - maybe Wilfried or Wolfgang or one of our other Germans will be able to supply corrections and a translation. I'd better take time out to tutor my stepson in World History.

Joe, you're right. It's Mädchenherze. Originally it is Mädchenherz, the final e is added to fit the rhythm.
It's a famous Paratroopers' song.

Your cousins must be very very old.
Wilfried, does it have a known tune?

Wolfgang

Wow--what an amazing collection of WW II era songs, Joe.

And that MP3 of "Auf Krete"---I can easily imagine it being sung beim Schunkeln.

Mudcat is truly wonderful.

Wolfgang - the MP3 link above gives the original tune
Ron - Songs to schunkel with are mostly in 3/4 and about drinking and Gemütlichkeit. This song is a song about a dying paratroopers farewell to his squaddie, and I'm sure nobody would schunkel with this song - not in Germany.
