Saw in the paper today that McGill University in Montreal has awarded Joni Mitchell an honorary doctorate in music.

In 1998 Chris Hillman, County-Rock pioneer and founding member of the Byrds was given a PHD from the University of Washington. It was in mathematics. Yes, a REAL one, and he earned it!

And there's a detailed analysis of her song "Big Yellow Taxi" in today's (UK) Independent newspaper. "A good little workhorse of a song", she is quoted as saying..."a nursery rhyme, really"

Hmmm....

If anyone deserves a Doctor of Music degree, it's Joni Mitchell. There were lots of great singer/songwriters in the '60's and '70's. Not to slight the likes of The Beatles, Stones, Baez etc, but for shaping the music of a generation, Dylan and Joni Mitchell immediately pop into my mind. Thanks, BlueJay

Yes, I agree she's deserving, and she hasn't been laurel-resting all these years either. Good on her!

Peace, Mooh.

here, here. I first started experimenting with alternate guitar tunings because of Joni Mitchell although pete Seeger certainly had been doing it before. All us little girl guitar-players in the seventies wanted to be just like Joni!
