Sorry, I know I don't post much anymore, too busy being a goddam er nurse, but i just have to brag a bit. A few hours ago,we just had one of our best gigs ever. Guitar, bass flute and vocals. Opened for Joe Uveges, out of Colorado Springs for a benefit trying to keep our local Fox movie theater in Walsenburg alive. 'Bout to have to close it's doors, built in 1919.

So we played our set, 45 minutes, snd Joe takes the stage. This guy is a great singer/songwriter, and did two sets. His last song was an original, called "Crossword", where he quizzed the audience, like "nine letters, meaning 'knowing what's going on'", until someone hollered out, "awareness". Etc.

At the end, he asked, "Ten letters, the best opening band in the world?" The audience immediately cried out "The D&A Band", (which is us). His last song was John Prine's "Paradise", in a bluegrass version, and called us all upon stage to provide harmonies.

Mr Uvegas advises us to contact the Black Rose Folk Music Society in Colorado Springs, which is pretty big-time in these parts, and he'll be a reference. He's confident they'll book us as an opening act, and he thinks the headliners will wish they'd opened for us.

Just had to brag. It's amazing to think this all started in Trinidad, Colorado, when I was in nursing school, looking for some folks to jam with. Thanks, BlueJay

Blue Jay, Joe sang at my daughter's wedding on July 3 in the Springs. He is indeed a wonderful singer and musician. He gave me one of his CD's and I am considering recording one of his songs. If you see him, please pass on Mick Lane's regards.

And congratulations on the gig. Great feeling, no?

Hey BlueJay, it's good to be hearing from you. I hope you can keep that theatre open. Keep the music going. I had a rather odd gig. The Fort restaurant in Morrison chartered a bus to take folks to Bent's Old Fort in LaJunta. A three hour drive each way and a picnic lunch, a visit to the bookstore and tour of the fort. They hired me to play music of the early west and tell stories of historic sites along the route. It all turned out well. But as we were nearing Denver, my hands were starting to cramp after playing banjo and fiddle for over six hours. adios,

That sounds great, Bluejay. Are the D&A I know in the band, or does that stand for something else?

Good to hear from you BlueJay...

I used to live in Monte Vista, and I for one hope like anything that you can keep that old movie theater alive. I have driven through Walsenburg many times, and although I do not know what building it is, I would sure hate to see any building in that lovely town have to close up.

Great story on the gig. Hear's hoping you can hang up the stethoscope (sp??) and hit the road on the big time!!

Rex, I was trying to look up some info on The Bucksnort Saloon and came across a posting where you mentioned playing with us (Sashay) That was a long time and many lost brain cells ago but I think I remember you. Glad to see you're still playing.

I'm living in Jacksonville, FL and playing only occasionally. Deanna and her band come down from Steamboat a couple of times a year and I play with them ... that's always fun.

Whoops! I should check in more often. Nice to hear from you Mark.
The Bucksnort is alive and well. It should have burned down several
times with the fires that were around it but somehow it stays up.
Joe Bye bought the place from Tom Patton. Now he has his own gig
anytime he wants. He gets some good groups in there too. Thankee
for dropping in. It's good to think on those times.
