Wow is she some good fiddler...where is she from? Sounds Cape Bretonish but wilder...some Quebecois in there..some Newfoundland..Irish..Scots...she comes in sometimes in the Scottish Independent Radio that I play via Internet...cd is called Verchuoisity....she is wonderful. Go buy her CD.

I saw her play at Kaustinen folk fest, Finland in July...She was great, As soon as I heard mention of a dancing fiddler, I thought "she MUST be Canadian",,,,,,,sure enough.

Worked. I would love for music therapists to listen to her...I think for so many people there is this sense of hopelessness and jadedness..I am not talking about deep depression here...just malaise...I think listening to her go would strip it right off...you would be dancing in the aisles...sort of like the Sharon Shannon effect. For those of us who are getting old, it will be like a shot of youthfullness...trust me...mg

Saw the young lady live Saturday night. Do not, repeat, DO NOT miss an opportunity to see her live; she is both a fiddlin' virtuoso and an all around delightful entertainer.

First saw April when she was about 12 performing at the fiddling Championship in Pembroke Ontario. Had a chance to speak to her last year when she performed in Montreal. What a great gal. Wanted to book her for this years festival but she has gotten a little out of our price range. However I do have another young lady who was a few years younger who is quite the performer as well. Her name is Erin Kelly.

Another Canadian wunderkind [sp?] is the brilliant - and young! - Laura Watson. Well worth a listen if you've never heard her. Great tone and mature musicianship in someone who is not even in her teens yet (or if so, only just). Is it something they put in the water over there? (And can I have some, please?)

Might be tempted to say, the Ottawa Valley (where I reside) is full of Aprils. Ottawa Valley fiddle style is kind of 50% Irish, 30% French Canadian, 20% Scottish. It is traditionally very driving, straight-ahead fiddling, because it developed as the accompaniment for Ottawa Valley stepdancing, very much a unique art itself.

Many towns in the Valley and elsewhere in Ontario have an annual fiddling & stepdancing competition, so there is a lively and sometimes profitable circuit for the many young people who learn these arts. The level of playing has gotten quite virtuostic although the focus can be narrow. Ms Verch is an example of someone who came through this milieu, and like Pierre Schryer and Graham Townsend before her, broadened their musical horizons to become an all-round musician. In her case at the Berklee College of Music!

I would agree with all of the above except that her jagged, harsh tonality puts me off more than a little. Other than that, she's brilliant.
