Can anyone help me with the tune to this wonderful song about reconciliation in Ireland, either in traditional musical notation, or MP3 file etc etc. Heard a guy sing it in our local folk club some time ago, and thought it was superb. Although I can remember the melody to the chorus, can't remember the exact melody to the verses. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

AJ has brought out a song book - I had 2 copies but gave them away as presents. Try getting in touch with him on his web site - He is advertising it at £5 - Bargain!!!

Fantastic singer songwriter - One of the best in my opinion.

Cheers

Anthony John is currently working on another songbook, in the very early stages, hopefully due out Mid 2005

Anthony John is not only a good singer/songwriter, he's a nice guy.

Seen him a couple of times at festivals / workshops and he comes
accross much better live than on his CD's which, although good, do not do him justice in my opinion.

Yep I agree Moses. Saw him a couple of years ago at Broadstairs, he was a very funny guy, full of humour and great stories in between songs and I kinda missed that when I played the CD.
I think that track might be on there if so I will try and get the mp3 to you Old Folkie.

To all of you, thanks for all of the feedback.
From what you say, I think I must go see him in concert, so I'm about to have a look at his website to see if he has a gig list on it.

Debs, thanks very much for the offer - would be very much appreciated. If you do find it, PM me and I'll send you my e mail address.

Thanks again

Tim

In 1997 I was given a bootleg tape of AJC's "Straight On - No Problem" - now I know that's supposed to be cheating artists of their hard-earned cash, but it led me to go and see him at a gig in Sheffield. I've bought all his CD's - great songs, great guitar style, lovely bloke. Go see him; buy his CD's - he usually sells them for a fiver - bargain.

He's a great talent - heard Anthony John on Frank Hennessy's radio show for the first time last Summer - I'm now learning a couple of his songs - hope that he gets to the US sometime, and that he keeps putting out new cd's.

Thanks again to all for the feedback
T
he feedback about AJC as a songwriter & performer seems very positive. Unfortunately he hasn't got any gigs in my part of the world on his website, so I can't go see him live yet, but I am thinking about buying one or more of his CD's.

Is Broken Years typical of most of his material, or has he changed his style over the years, and for those who have bought his CD's, how good are they relative to seeing him live?

Live or recorded - 6 of one and half a dozen of the other for me. He is definitely good live but his CDs have stuff on which you would never hear live - Such as drums and Uilean pipes on some tracks. His material ranges vastly from stuff like 'the broken years' to up-tempo almost 'jazzy' type numbers. My favourites are 'Tuesday night is always Karaoke' and 'Irish Eyes'. Different styles altogether but both brilliant.

His later stuff did change a little - particulary after a near death experience he had with a serious heart complaint. He is fine now but certainly lives life for the moment - In a healthy sort of way of course:-) While on the later albums he does repeat some ideas it is always worth listening to hear the new approach or a complete new concept. To me he will always be up there with the best. It is only a matter of time before the rest of the world agrees;-)

Where abouts in the world are btw, OldFolkie? I am sure if you contact AJ through his site he will be happy to see if it would fit in with his tours. He realy is that friendly a guy.

Cheers

Mike and I have spent weeks learning "The broken years" - its really difficult to squeeze all the words in without sounding silly! It may get its first outing at Market Rasen Folk Club tonight.

Sorry guys, hit the wrong button!!

DtG

Thanks for your thoughts on AJC's CDs.

I'm in the Midlands, just outside Solihull, close to intersection of M42 and M40.

Sod's law, AJ did a gig just a few weeks ago in Birmingham, which I missed - didn't know at that point who had written the song! only started researching it last week or so. Damn!

Sooz - unfortunately Mkt Rasen is a bit far to come from Solihull, otherwise I'd come up to hear you do the song (perhaps you could even teach me it! As I said at start of this thread, I can't remember the melody to the verses hence my quest!)

Thanks again to all

Old Folkie

Anthony John's CD's have included live tracks, one who's name escapes me at the moment has both a live and recorded version of "An Aquaintenace of mine". He often does gid's with a keyboard player Elizabeth Van ........... Oops (Sorry Elizabeth) who's playing and singing complements Anthonys superbly
To reiterate whar DtG say's if you contact Anthony you will be sure of a reply and a helpful one at that, he truly is very approachable, as I know from my own experienece, he has even offered to teach me the way in which he plays songs and has turned my way at gig's so I can see whathe is doing on the fret's

Try getting you local folk club organiser(s) to book him. I'm sure he would appreciate it and it would be a Christmas treat for the club! He is Wirral based and seems to be pretty close to home for the next few months. Solihul would not be too bad a journey provided he sticks to the toll road;-)

Good Luck

Dave
